More Superfriends episodes coming to DVD

    Like This Thread!

The World's famous friends are coming back on DVD this spring with Superfriends Season 2. These episodes are from the 1973 series with the Jr. Superfriends. (Ha, Ha, just kidding ).

It's the 1977 version with the Wonder Twins. 16 episodes are included. Now, I wonder if it will be uncut with the Wonder Twins shorts, and the opening/closing credits included (that aired from ABC), or will it only include the 16 half-hour episodes with the core group that originally aired with the hour-long series. I may just pick up a copy, since this is my favorite incarnation of the series. WB made a wise choice to not include the '73 version. This version started to go back to basics, having them battle against powerful villians, and not emphasize about morals/pollution, just as Yogi and his crew did during the same year. Boomerang will air some eps of this version next month as their character of the month.

Kind of confused here, is this set the 'World's Greatest Superfriends' season? WIll it be followed by the 'All new Superfriends hour'?

Tthe ones I can't wait for are 'The Legendary Superpowers Show' and ' Galacitc Guardians'.

Based on the description, WHV is releasing the other half of Challenge of the Superfriends from 1978, not The All-New Super Friends Hour from 1977. I was hoping for the 1977 episodes with Safety Tips, Decoder messages, Crafts, and Health Tips. At least these episodes haven't been rerunned to death in recent years unlike the corresponding Legion of Doom episodes. I do hope that every episode, including the rarely seen, Incredible Space Circus episode, which has never been syndicated or reran outside of its original season.

It would have been nice if Warner released the episodes right in the first place and released them in the format they originally aired (i.e., the full Challenge of Superfriends hour). I bought the Challenge box set and was disappointed in the format and the lack of compelling extras. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like things is going to be different with Challenge part 2, they didn't even name the season right (technically, Season 2 is The All-New Super Friends Hour, with season 3 being the Challenge).

At least, we're likely to see the opening credits of The All-New Super Friends Hour.

From what Doyng posted, I believe it is The All-New SuperFriends Hour that's being released on DVD. And I'm sure it will include everything from the original theme, title cards, fun segments, as well as health and safety tips as they were originally broadcast. One good indication of this was the fact that Boomerang aired a marathon of these episodes intact last year. For those of you who don't remember, this series had 4 episodes per hour. First was a short that featured at least 2 of the core members, then a Wonder Twins short, then a near half-hour episode which featured the entire main cast, and last, a short that teamed a core SF with one of the minor superheroes, several of whom were introduced in this series. Among them were established DC Comics superheroes Green Lantern, Atom, the Flash (though he already made an appearance in the original '73 series), Hawkman and Hawkgirl. And with ethnic diversity a growing issue, new superheroes like Black Vulcan, Samurai, and Apache Chief debuted to sort of balance things out animation wise. And as stated, between these cartoons throughout each hour were segments mainly for kids that provided them with lessons on magic and arts and craft for fun, as well as the more serious health and safety tips. These may look corny today, but when I watched them the first time, they were AOK. I was surprised they were included in last year's marathon. But they were a piece of nostalga worth including and could be a good influence for a new generation of kids watching them for the first time.

The All-New Super Friends Hour only had 15 episodes, 15 half-hour and 45 shorts. Also, the stories described in the description sound like episodes from the first Challenge of the Superfriends half-hour. "Battle at the Earth's Core" featured the Superfriends going to the center of the earth; Superman and Wonder Woman shrunk down to microscopic size and entered Aquaman to save him after he turned into a radioactive monster in "Journey Through Inner Space"; and the team battled Dracula in "Attack of the Vampire." All of those stories aired during the first half-hour of Challenge not the All-New SF Hour. WHV has been known to be wrong in their descriptions in the past but based on the blurb I am lead to believe that it is the Challenge episodes that are being released.

I don't care which year it's from, as long as it's a Superfriends season set I'm buying.

Hi all! I am new to the board and a HUGE SuperFriends fan. I used to watch it as kid and have amassed the entire series off of repeats throughout the years. This series being released is some of the best of the Wonder Twins episodes of all. If you don't remember them they hold up well...but you obviously have to like SuperFriends.

I agree with Mr. Intensity. The description provided does seem to indicate the "Lost Season". And while I would love to own The All-New Superfriends hour on DVD, I am really excited about some of the episodes that haven't aired in years! I have never seen "The Incredible Space Circus". I was only 3 y.o. when this episode first aired and since it has never re-aired beyond that year, it should be a real treat! (Although based on what I've read about the ep, I won't like it too much, as I am a Wonder Woman fan).

Mxyzptlk's first animated appearance (unless he was in the Filmation cartoons) was during this run. The floating brains from Futurama make their first appearance as well!

Is the CHALLENGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS "Season 1" DVD edited?

I had someone tell me that the back of the box has fine print that says, "some footage may be missing from the original episodes and that these episodes were based on later runnings of the show".

Has anyone found that footage is mising from an actual episode? I thinking they may have just put that on the box because it originally aired as a one-hour show along with a different SuperFriends 30 minute segment.

Yeah, they cut that scene where Robin drops the F-bomb.

Cover art is up at DVDANSWERS.COM. This time they got it right and called it a "VOLUME" instead a "season".

Interesting that the Flash is visible on the cover. If it is the season that most of us are guessing, then Flash wasn't in any of the episodes. A lot of Batman and Robin on the front and side, but poor Superman, he only on there once. And look at him, he almost looks like he's pouting! Actually, all the men look very pensive. At least Wonder Woman is enjoying the moment. I hope the Twins are on the back cover, seeing as how they have a retro video dedicated to them.

It's a nice cover but I do wish the Wonder Twins were on it.

Now that I've read the info and saw the cover art, I can let you know that Flash did appear in The All-New SuperFriends Hour. He teamed up with Superman in the short titled "Tibetan Raiders". Here, they aided a commercial airliner that went down in the Tibetan mountains, stopping a bunch of raiders from threatining the passengers and crew. Like I said, many of the minor characters made their first appearances in this series. Flash, however, did appear in the original series from 1973, so ANSFH wasn't his first appearance.

That is true, but the season being released is not The All-New Superfriends Hour. See Mister Intensity's reasoning above.

Another point for the reason for the season of "Missing Episodes originally paired with Challenge of the Superfriends".... The website tvshowsondvd.com states that the Superfriends DVD will have a running time is 365 minutes. If you divide that by 16 episodes that gives you 22.8 minutes, which is roughly the length of a "30-minute" episode sans the commericials.
