A new beginning for the best-known unknown local TV station in the Northeast!

Yes!! And if you live in the NYC/New Jersey/northeastern Pennsylvania triad, you just might remember it as WWHT-TV (the first true home for "The Uncle Floyd Show") or, a bit later, U-68 (the populist answer to MTV for a land without cable until well into the 1990s!). Just bear with me for a few more lines and you'll see how this relates to classic animation.

Today, it's WHSE-TV, on Channel 68 as always, and only recently shed its association with Home Shopping Network to become the only truly funky, low-concept local channel left Out Here. (You know, just like the ones that did endless hours of vintage cartoons in B&W and color, plus monster movies at midnight, "Green Acres," etc.) A true blessing for the '00s!

Which brings me to its (thus far) two Monday-through-Friday animated half-hours: "Cartoon Arcade" (3:30 p.m.) and "Cartoon Junction" (4:30 p.m.), both packaged by the AIN Network. The first seems dedicated to late '70s/early '80s made-for-TV toons, while the second is where you can count on anything from the Famous Studios Popeye to ... drumroll, please ... BOSKO!!!!!!!

Rest assured, I'll be following up on this with content descriptions very soon.

    Pretty neat sounding.

In an era of freeze-dried syndication and netlets with styrofoam personality, it's great to know that there are still eccentric TV stations out there.

I have to admit, I'm pretty jealous of anyone who can see Bosko on a local TV station. Local stations are often the best when it comes to classic cartoons. I never had to deal with any censorship of the Mammy T&Js or blackface-including Droopys on local channel 38. Be sure to tape that stuff, you never know how long it'll last. I'll be interested to hear what rarities you see.

I also am quite envious. If I were able to get channels like this on satellite, I'd get direct TV.
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

Which reminds me ... I'm sorry for not having made this clear, but WHSE-TV is also available on most area cable systems Out Here, not just over-the-air. So take another look at your own neighborhood's cable and/or satellite channel lineups ... you never know when your system might add one more indie station to meet its quota! To Be Continued.
