Ugly Betty is nothing but a Betty Toons ripoff!
The answer to that is technically "no," but only at the present time. If "Ugly Betty" is actually becoming a hit, I have to wonder how long "Betty Toons" is going to stay hidden. As you might have noticed, I recently had to change the name of the article previously called "The most obscure cartoon I can possibly review." The problem is that someone made a US version of the telenovela it was based on, exposing its origins to the English-speaking world.
Due to months of ABC promotion and a high ratings premiere, the subject of this cartoon isn't obscure anymore. Even though I don't have an interest in watching the show, I've seen those grinning braced teeth a million times, and it's pretty obvious now to American eyes what that drawing is intended to be. I can't play off the cartoon's obscurity anymore, so I had to reword the article.
This'll be interesting. When the inevitable "Ugly Betty: Season One" DVD set shows up in 2007, is this bad cartoon going to show up as one of the extras? Or is it going to be dubbed by 4Kids, put on Saturday Morning and renamed "Xtreme Maximum Betty X"? Let's find out together....

Er, i've seen obscure-er (Such as a cartoon set in vaguely Greek-Roman times and featuring the talking stone busts of old dowager-esque people) It's so obscure that I don't even know the name of it. .
Including episodes of a Spin-off cartoon on the original show's DVD set is common for the more "niche" shows (Punky Brewster, ALF, etc.) and some movies (Ghoustbusters, Ace Ventura, etc.), but I don't think whoever owns the DVD rights to Ugly Betty do it, because the cartoon, even when tranlsated, looks like it might be inaccesable to the people who watch the live-actionshow. Judging by the episode anyalysis you conducted, Martianinvader, The Simpsons this ain't.
However, if The success of Ugly Betty in the states might call some attention to the cartoon, maybe it might get a DVD release or some TV exposure.
Zim: "I thought the Tallest killed you."
Skoodge "Yeah, but I'm all right now."
Mad Jack the Pirate: "You were DEAD! How do you get better from being DEAD, you Scottish twit?!??"
An Ugly Betty cartoon? Why not! On Latin American TV somewhere there's an animated version of El Chavo. I know there's a show like that because in a display near the bakery of the Shop-Rite where I work, there's a display of cookie and roll-like products that has pictures of the animated El Chavo characters printed on it.
"Legends never die. Networks kill them..."
"Crimefighters...don't cry...(HONK!)"
"あなたの弾丸は私に害を与えることができない。私の翼は鋼鉄の盾のようである!"
"This is my childhood. Don't mess with my childhood..."
"You just became part of a bigger universe. You just don't know it yet..."
I doubt we'll see a translation anytime soon. Ugly Betty is popular but I doubt the cartoon would appeal to kids...unless it was on Nickelodeon. Kids will watch anything on Nickelodeon.
Hah, you're so right. I have to applaud Nick for paying to put on stuff like Avatar when they really don't HAVE to. They could run old Dudley Do-Right episodes and still win 6-12.Originally Posted by Samurai Quack

How is that possible? Ugly Betty predates Betty Toons.Originally Posted by TheMecca

Technically, the telenovela came before "Betty Toons," but doesn't the cartoon predate the American adaptation?Originally Posted by Jave

Maybe Betty Toons was Ugly Betty [spanish version]: TAS.
Citation is Wikipedia! The show was so popular that it was aired to a wide Latin American audience. Its success spawned a short and unsuccessful sequel called Ecomoda, filmed in Colombia and produced by RCN and Univision. Some scenes from the first episode were filmed in Buenos Aires and some scenes for the opening sequence were filmed in Miami, Florida. Then an animated series called Betty Toons was released.
The original soap opera (telenovela) was the very first incarnation, THEN the cartoon "Betty Toons" was made. It aired down here on the Cartoon Network.

I've received several Emails from people "down where you are" that say Betty Toons is, in fact, back on over there. Is it true?Originally Posted by Jave
In fact, I was going to ask one of them to either tape or Tivo it and send the tape/disc to me so I could make a "sequel review." Never got to it, though.

Oh, okay. I thought you were referring to the Ugly Betty on ABC, not the telenovela.Originally Posted by TheMecca

HOLY COW, BETTY TOONS IS STILL ON TELEFUTURA!
I just got an IM from someone named "Mistystuffer" who told me he/she found Betty Toons on Saturday mornings at 7 and 7:30 Central. In other words, it's still airing in America. I'm going to try to adjust my reception as best I can and get this show again--like I said, a followup review would be great.
By the way, I never know what to say when a complete stranger shows up in an AIM window. Usually it's "Who are you??" which is kind of rude, but there's no other alternative. Except in this case.
Honest, that's what I said.Mistystuffer: hi
martianinvader9: Why have you been stuffing Misty?

You want obscure cartoons? How's about Brothers Flub? I seem to be the only person on this planet who remembers Nickelodeon airing that around 1997. I remember it was about two alien brothers named Guapo and Frazz, who ate a lot of guacamole and worked as couriers. Their boss was named Tarara Boomdeay (sp?). I loved that cartoon.
But then again, I was incredibly naive well into the 21st century, so I falsely assumed that all of the cartoons I grew up on would be around forever. That and we never had blank tapes so I never thought to tape anything. Shame.
My Twitter. I promise to be funny someday, but in the meantime, read my failed attempts.
I had a dog named Misty. She died. And she wasn't stuffed (thank goodness.)![]()
