Ok, so where does the impulse to slash Zim and Dib come from? I'd say from the set-up's similarity to the one from CLAMP's Saint Tail. Asuka Jr. is out to catch the Robin Hood-type thief Saint Tail. Saint Tail is really a girl at school who likes him, so she leaves him clues. Otherwise, the moron wouldn't be around to lose on such a regular basis.

Meaning... CLAMP's version of Zim would probably have Zim as a cute alien girl- or an alien of undetermined sex posing as a cute girl.

That said... I've seen a website with episodic Z/D evidence and it was bordering on being the stupidest thing ever typed. IZ's never on when I'm looking, but I'm curious to decide for myself.

I've thought under different circumstances they'd be fabulous friends--both obsessive, both short, and both picked on/ignored/despised by their peers...but they are not lovers. Unless one's a really sick schmuck and considers "Bolognus Maximus" in a Freudian context.

Then again, maybe they hate one another because they see too much of themselves in each other (at least, Dib might, to some degree; Zim just sees the whelp as a roadblock to global domination).

This one's pretty good... It's the first Z/D fic I ever read, and the only one I read the whole way through. Most everything else seems a generic any two guys/rivalshipping with Zim and Dib's names in it.

I completely agree with that - I love episodes that have the two working together, playing off each other, and generally killing each other at the same time. It also has the same appeal of Vegeta and Goku working together, or Joker and Batman, Darkseid and Superman, Ganon and Link, and what have you. Just having wierd circumstances in which two people who would never work together... work together.

Mortal enemies who harbor some respect for each other go back probably to antiquity--cf. Klink and Hogan in Hogan's Heroes. Twice the Kommandant has admitted that under different circumstances they could be very good friends (and now I will sit back and wait for that Slash), but it's very one-way...Hogan still considers him an inept, if servicable, putz.
Actually, back to Zim...it's Purple Elder and Red Elder I'm a little worried about.... [high whistle, makes fluttering fairy motion with hand]

Yep, but add in hints of transference.

Is it just being protective big brother? You could go all out CLAMP-style and have someone tease Dib about a sister complex.

It's really by a case-by-case basis. It's built into Ben-Hur, as a one-sided thing that was never brought up to Charleton Heston during filming... just the other guy.

But the fact is... It's always blatant that m/f enemies or rivals are more than "friendship could've beens"... But it's possible that it could be in the reverse. Maybe Catwoman and Batman are more like friends/surrogate family, and the Joker's obsession is a bit different.... It's a whole other branch of characterization that doesn't get much play, but is worth trying out more...

Just about every ZIM fanfic I've ever seen is a montage of sheer horror. Not many of the fans stop to look at the all the constructions of the characters... everyone is a loner. There aren't really companionships, yet people still come up with ZIM/Gaz and ZIM/Dib yaoi fics. I dunno. I can't read two sentences without getting sick. Usually it's stuff like: "Gaz lustfully sighed and thought that maybe somewhere within her, she had feelings for Zim... could it be? LUUUUUVVV!?" ACK!! So bad.

Okay, now I need to stop thinking about it before I explode...

Point taken. If done well, though, it could be interesting. Ironically Gaz has seldom said two consecutive words to Zim...but if he did something to win her heart unwittingly, and she misinterpreted it as affection...or, since they both enjoy making Dib's life a living flaming hell, they could build on that common interest. She strikes me as the sort of girl who would play with Zim's heart--or squiddley-spooge, as the case might be--just to annoy her brother to no end. But he strikes me as the sort of guy who would seduce a girl for his own ends...so they might make for a fun couple indeed. Who's really in love and who is simply faking it? And when does fake love blossom into the real thing?
Gaz does love pizza and video games...Zim's been leery of pizza since his bad experience with it in "Zitboy", but he's got that big computer, which'd be perfect for a game nut like her. I can see it now: Dib confronts his enemy, saying, "This is all a scheme! A sick and twisted scheme! You want to implant my baby sister with your foul Irkin spawn, don't you!" "I assure you, young sir, my intentions are honorable," Zim says, in his haughtiest manner. "We Irkens never implant our foul spawn until at least the fourth date. " Dib leaps onto Zim and proceeds to strangle him....
