I think in this case, it was probably Funimation's idea rather than the network's. Most likely, these edits were made so it could be shown on Toonzai...
I can see flash editing punches and kicks but why are they now cutting out ki blast barrages? What's so bad about atleast showing him rapid firing ki blasts?
I have a hard time believing Nicktoons would demand this, especially since that episode of Spongebob with the two mistaking Squidward for a ghost ended up with Mr.Krabs and others planning to attend a funeral. Then again, it seems like every mention of death is now being censored, like using defeat instead of demise.
The network uses death all the time, from Vlad telling Skulker he didn't hire him to kill Danny to Spongebob saying the fish in the store are dead on the movie (and the aforementioned funeral scene where Krabs said they all came as soon as they were sure he was DEAD) and even to just using other words like waste (Which is what Kai was originally doing). Is it just me or is Funimation going beyond what Nicktoons would require?

Cartoons aren't "just for kids"...but they're not just for adults either. They're for everyone.
That's one theory a few people came up with in the forum I got the comparison shots from. Though Funimation claims they aren't editing for 4-Kids, they also claimed when Saban was in charge that the edits were FCC required, come to find out that wasn't true. Whoever's the cause of these edits, it's ridiculous.
Another theory is that they're self censoring on purpose for the sake of giving people an incentive to buy the uncut bluray releases, like when they were making psuedo cuss words that shouldn't really be censored (Like Frikkin when they "censored" it to absolute on the Toonami Broadcast) on the Original DVD's.
This is.... interesting. After seeing the Spirit Bomb episode, Piccolo clearly seems to call Frieza scum when it was previously censored to worms. Guess this just proves Funimation's also wildly inconsistent in these edits.
