Disney on Saturday mornings and prime time in general is not as high as it was back in the fall and winter. Disney is facing a rough patch right now.

TUESDAY: Agents of SHIELD | The Goldbergs | Trophy Wife | Mind Games
WEDNESDAY: The Middle | Suburgatory | Modern Family | Mixology | Nashville

    Also, via Nickelodeon press release:

Nickelodeon closed the week (4/25/11-5/1/11) as basic cable’s number-one total day network with total viewers (2.1 million) and kids 2-11 (3.3/1.2 million) for the 18th consecutive week this year. The net also bested its closest competitor by double-digits with total viewers (+38%), kids 2-11 (+32%), kids 6-11 (+4%), tweens 9-14 (+0%) and kids 2-5 (+75%).

Nick’s weekly win was fueled by performances by SpongeBob SquarePants, which nabbed eight of the top ten telecasts with kids 2-11, and T.U.F.F. Puppy, the latest addition to Nick’s hit animated series roster, which ranks as the number-two animated series for the week (behind SpongeBob SquarePants).

For the week, Nickelodeon’s preschool programming block (Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-2 p.m. ET/PT) bested its closest competitor by TK-digits with kids 2-5 (+90%) and total viewers (+39%), and boasts four of the top five preschool telecasts (#1 Max & Ruby, #2 Dora the Explorer and #3 Bubble Guppies, #4 Team Umizoomi).

It sounds the ratings ebb and flow between Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. Last year, I remember, while Nickelodeon went into largely rerun mode in the summer months, Disney Channel quickly gained. It makes me wonder why Nickelodeon even has a summer hiatus period at all. It seems counterintuitive - if kids are out of school, why wouldn't Nickelodeon be debuting their best shows in the summer months? I have yet to figure out why in general it is the fall season and not the summer season is used to debut new shows. They don't have to follow the convention of prime-time broadcast networks.

As I mentioned in the Power Rangers Samurai thread, it is good news for the show itself, but probably poor news if you're hoping for an original take on Goseiger when it becomes a Power Ranger season. If Nickelodeon and Saban Brands can get ratings like this with what is essentially a direct translation of Samurai Sentai Shinkeger, why should Saban Brands, and PR executive producer Jonathan Tzachor try anything different for Tensou Sentai Goseiger?

Added Saturday primetime ratings in my post above Tommy's. Thanks to Son of the Bronx, we have Saturday primetime ratings for Disney Channel and Nickelodeon on April 30. Power Rangers Samurai did better in total viewers than every show in primetime. Now, Supah Ninjas is the show that's in the most trouble.

    From: Cynopsis Kids 5/6/2011

Kids 6-11 demo ratings for Saturday, April 30, 2011:

    Nickelodeon (4.2/22) -- Disney Channel (4.0/21)

    7:00AM The Fairly OddParents (1.7/17) -- Handy Manny (1.8/19)
    7:30AM Fanboy & Chum Chum (2.5/19) -- Special Agent Oso (1.7/13)
    8:00AM SpongeBob (4.2/25) -- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (1.8/11)
8:30AM SpongeBob (5.6/29) -- Jake and the Never Land Pirates (2.3/12)
    9:00AM SpongeBob (6.1/29) -- Phineas and Ferb (2.8/13)
    9:30AM SpongeBob (6.0/27) -- Phineas and Ferb (3.7/17)
    10:00AM SpongeBob (5.4/24) -- Lemonade Mouth (6.2/28)***
    10:30AM T.U.F.F. Puppy (3.8/17) -- Lemonade Mouth cont.
11:00AM Penguins of Madagascar (3.4/16) -- Lemonade Mouth cont.
    11:30AM SpongeBob (4.0/19) -- Lemonade Mouth cont.
12:00PM Power Rangers Samurai (4.6/22) -- Wizards of Waverly Place (5.1/24)
    12:30PM SpongeBob (3.7/18) -- Wizards of Waverly Place (4.2/21)

[Timeslot winners in bold. New episodes in red.]

***NOTE: Due to Lemonade Mouth being averaged over 2 hours, we don't know who "won" each half-hour, but you can safely assume it beat Nick from 10:30-12pm. Not sure about the 10am half-hour (of SpongeBob) though.

Oddly, despite its series-high rating, Power Rangers Samurai isn't listed in the top 10 of any demographic in Cynopsis: Kids for May 6. Because we now have both Kids 6-11 and Total Viewer data for one specific airing, we can now figure out how much of the total viewership is Kids 6-11.

Based on the Cynopsis: Kids data, using the highest rated Nickelodeon show among Kids 6-11 (9am Saturday Spongebob airing), 1 rating point is approximately 247,000 viewers. Power Rangers Samurai had a 4.6 rating, meaning approximately, 1,136,200 Kids 6-11 were watching Unexpected Arrival. Since Robert Seidman gave a total viewership of 3,184,000, dividing 1,136,200 by 3,184,000 gives a percentage of 35.68%, which means this:

35.68% of the total viewership for Power Rangers Samurai was Kids 6-11.
64.32% of the total viewership for Power Rangers Samurai was either Kids 2-5 or Viewers 12+.

So they weren't kidding when they said the show has become the #1 action show for boys in that age group.

I wonder how well they could retain the audience if they scheduled episodes immediately after those SpongeBob time slots at 9 or 10. It seems thats around the time the SatAM block peaks, and it might fix that problem of bleeding viewers they have immediately afterward.

Disney Channel has definitely taken notice of Power Rangers Samurai's ratings. They recently changed their May 14th schedule, and DC is going to air Lemonade Mouth once again on Saturday, this time at 11:00 am, going directly against the new episode.

Before Bryan comes in here with more details, Power Rangers Samurai made the Cable Top 25 this week, from Robert Seidman, at #22 with 3.718 million viewers despite the very heavy criticism the show is receiving among PR fans.

IMO, that largely is because Disney Channel is on the decline in the ebb and flow ratings battle between DC and Nickelodeon. Next month, momentum could favor Disney Channel, with several new shows and could reverse the trend. It was in a summer month last year, July 2010, when Disney Channel first overtook Nickelodeon on a Saturday morning.

However, it wasn't the Top 10 of either Kids 6-11 or Tweens 9-14. In fact, Supah Ninjas got into the Top 10 of Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, and that wasn't in the Top 25 of cable at all last week. It sounds like PRS and Spongebob would have the highest percentage of Kids 2-5 viewers out of the total Kids 2-11 demographic for their shows, suggesting the show appeals to a very young audience, as has been speculated throughout the Power Ranger forums for a while now.

Yeah, that's very discouraging and gives Tzachor more of an excuse to continue to dumb down the show with poorly translated Sentai scripts.

There is this quote from the BTR 3rd season press release that may help explain it:

Year-to-date, Big Time Rush ranks as the #1 series with K6-11 and the #1 live-action series with K2-11 on all TV.
So this release means Power Rangers Samurai cannot be the #1 live-action series on all TV then with Kids 2-11, although it does appear to do better with Kids 2-11 than with Kids 6-11.
