Danny Phantom Belated Review. Why all the hate?...

    Like This Thread!

    The show.

Hmm. let's see here. It can be summed up in one question. Why do so many people hate the show?

don't get me wrong, the show has its attractive qualities, but it is also incredibly irritatinga and half-a**ed in many ways. Which leads me to my question:

Why all the Danny Phantom hatred? Anyone know?

My theory is it's the following, because they're poorly done:

Voice acting, musical score and soundtrack, and artwork that is only partially aesthetically appealing.

The show, despite it's original concept, falls flat, especially in the audio department. It's easy to hate the way Danny Phantom (the show not the voice actor, Danny's voice is the least annoying of the entire cast)'s audio sounds.

To sum it up. Danny Phantom can easily seem like a big waste of time when you compare it to a clearly superior fellow modern Nick show, Avatar. It's easy to understand why one really caught on and the other (Danny) struggles endlessly to get ratings, only to be cancelled before it decided to get any good on any kind of serious level (Phantom).

Plus, the look of the characters is flat and stiff. When you're doing action adventure, stiff characters look lamely unflexible. At least Aang is flexible enough to fly around and make it look good. There really IS NO comparison. The action sequences look like Butch Hartman trying to do another comedy show with a few weak attempts at drawing fighting moves. And he fails miserably at it. That's not fighting. That's character's partially flexing their limbs.

Any other belated reviews for this show anyone? Afterall, not everyone wants to read a review of a show as soon as its released.

Follow up question, why do so many people adore Avatar? It's a cheezy, A-typical, sad Western attempt at Anime.

Funny, you assume too much. You assume I actually like Avatar when I compare it to even more shows. Never said that. Avatar isn't anywhere close to being my favorite either. Nothing nick does is. But it's a heck of a lot better than Danny. Let's not kid ourselves here just to sound "smart"

I have the same thoughts on Avatar, I just don't see what is so special about it. On this site it seems to be God.

Easy question. It's much easier to dislike and point out the flaws of a show once it's ended. When it's still going, there's always that "Oh, that'll change, I'm sure" and "It's probably leading up to something so it's not filler" attitude a lot of people have (myself included) but once it's over, you can accurate point out all of a show's flaws in that regard. Bad writing, forgotten plot points, and so forth become much more apparent when there's no more episodes to expand or develop certian issues of a show. Those optimistic attitudes turn into "Wow, they completely forgot about ___" and "I'm disappointing it was always ___" and so forth. So the amount of "haters" popping up after both shows ended is completely understandable, and expected.

I didn't think there was a majority of Danny haters. I liked it. It had its cheesy FOP moments, followed by ten minutes of action and comedy.

I'm not proud to admit it, but I started enjoying the music, even that sappy rapping. What was wrong with the VAs? I've heard even worse voices in anime, they're not that bad.

Danny is not Avatar, it's clearly unfair to compare things, and superior? A matter of opinion.

PPG were more than stiff, we all know how that turned out. I can't really take a review seriously if it compares one thing to another. I can easily come back with Avatar vs DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho...any animated cartoon seen from Japan, and Avatar, fact or opinion, will fall.

    1) You HAVE to compare things. It's matter of life. I was going to use an example with dog turd, but I don't know how to word it. Besides, it is fair in this case, since they are both action series with a squirt of comedy.
    2) Point of an review. Check out someone, and write an article on it based on your personal opinion.

Just to correct some things: Danny Phanton was around one million viewers behind Avatar; to say one "totally caught on while the other struggled" is kind of stretch with them being fairly close. Heck, Danny Phantom had better ratings than Avatar up until Sozen's Comet aired. If you want to get technical, since Danny experienced peak ratings midway through the series, Avatar was the one that "struggled" since it only surpassed Danny on it's final episode.

Hmm. I'm not exactly sure how accurate that ratings assessment of yours is, so I won't call you on it. However, I'll admit, I did grow to like Danny Phantom. This is not a "Phantom sucks" review. Far from it. The strong points of DP are strong, VERY strong. Certain scenes are incredibly memorable. I just hated the way the whole thing sounds for the most part. Please don't try to call me on that because I'll admit right now that's just my personal opinion. All you people are free to think and write otherwise. I'm not the type of web-denizen that's going to try to control what other people write (*coughs* mods). However, when Danny Phantom works, it WORKS. But that is not to say that it doesn't have a lot of things working against it.

Also, I always kind of assumed Danny Phantom struggled in the ratings, considering how little the original Nickelodeon plays it compared to Nicktoons. Is this not true? Anyone care to clarify?...Anyone IN the industry?

Also, not all anime voice actors are good at what they do...just becuase there famous. Some are better than others. And yes, plenty of famous anime V.A.'s are as talented as they are well known. It depends.

However an American show should not automatically be considered "good" just becuase it's associated by the public with anime. As much as I worship Japanese anime, even I have to admit that....

Actually, that's not entirely true. Avatar has it's fair share of Toon Zone critics. They just diminished right around the time Sozin's Comet aired, because that proved Avatar really was a great show.

If that's your assessment of the show, I assume you haven't watched much of it yourself.

I don't see much diminishing. Folks like Marn_Hieorogryph , HarlinSchmoo, etc. on this tread are proof of it. The way I see it, Avatar, as you said, is a fantastic show, one of the best in recent animation. However, like anything popular, deseverdly or not, Avatar gets overrated by many people, making it seem more than it is. This in turn causes people like the aforementioned users to underrate it, and point out various flaws and whatnot in an attempt to make it seem less than it. IMHO, that's really no better. Avatar's not the end-all-be-all animated show, yes, but that's no excuse to try to undermine it's exceptional quality, value, and success.

Reruns tend to be for the higher rated shows, or shows that can carry their high ratings in reruns.... or just filler. DP doesn't have reruns anymore on Nick, then again neither does Avatar. It's mostly FOP and Spongebob, and the like; which bring in much more ratings than DP/Avatar do. Truth be told, they both weren't terribly high ratings grabbers, unfortunately.

Not exactly. You see, you seem to be measuring by one of it's specials (The Ultimate Enemy, which is considered the best episode ever by most fans), which made it one of the highest-rated shows on the network for a few months. But those ratings didn't stick that long. Before the special, and sometime a bit after the special, it had decent ratings that didn't really help to much in getting a 4th season. Avatar actually did a better, but you are right in that it didn't surpass that DP special until the finale.

Specials are all we really have to go on, since regular episodes don't tend to have their numbers reported unless maybe a season premier or finale sometimes.

No, you don't have to compare. A review can easily be made without it. If Danny Phantom has problems, let them be stated on its own two feet, don't force it down through the mud by placing another television series in front of it. Anyone can do it, and it weakens the review. Like I said in my earlier post, Avatar vs Naruto...It's not good writing honestly if someone pulled that.

Now you are speaking my language. The part about people being anti-something even when it is as good as the hype surrounding it. I just don't get certain people's comments. If somethings good, it's good. If something's not, it's not. All I'm saying...

I so wish that were true. It would make my job as an artist easier. But it isn't true. People analogize me and my work on a personal basis to other things, as opposed to giving me credit in and of myself, professionally speaking. I really wish they didn't. That way I'd actually get credit for all my contributions to the internet. But no, people always gotta go an analogize. I could be like you and say "you can't do that", but that's not gonna stop people from doing it...I truly do wish what you said was true in some truthful or objective industry way. But like I said, it's not. It would make my career a lot easier if people did as you said and never compared anything to anything, but honestly that's a load of nonsense. But despite what you say, people can and will compare project A to project B, despite your protests.

Just about every up and coming big thing or person inevitably gets compared to what's already out there...sooner or later. Fear it or accept it.

That's just the way it works. If you don't understand that, you don't understand how the game works, IMHO.

You're free to think differently, but if you do on that particular topic, I doubt I'll agree.
