Metallica - "St. Anger" Album Talkback

    Like This Thread!
Metallica's new video, "St. Anger," premiered this past Tuesday on MTV and MTV2. That same day, the song hit radio. What are your thoughts on Metallica's first new song since 2000's "I Disappear?"

EDIT (June 6, 2003): "St. Anger," Metallica's first album of original material since 1997's "Reload" was released yesterday. What are your thoughts on the album?

i'm a bit disappointed with St. Anger... i've only heard the song. the lyrics seem to fight the music at different times (different beats/rhythms), a few small pieces really rock tho. i think for the most part this song sounds like something an amateur band would do.

Those are some pretty horrid lyrics, and James sings the chorus kinda funky.

This is a re-post form my other thread. Sorry I missed the "St. Anger Talkback" thread.

    >>Metallica's St. Anger album is being moved up 5 days to this Thursday!

They are also pushing an 'easter egg' hunt of sorts by posting each of the album's songs (live performances off the bonus DVD) on various sites. Good stuff.

As for the single St. Anger, I really like it. The music reminds me of the Kill em All album. Straight headbanging stuff. The lyrics are different but very catchy. From a few of the other songs I have heard/seen (from the above links), they all follow St. Anger's lead. I think its a good thing for this album to sound like another ...And Justice for All or even Kill Em All.

Shoddy work, IMO. Sounds less thought out, and shows that metallica wants to sound like Nickelback o_O

And I think they moved it up 5 days early to not be beaten by radiohead

    The song=Crap
    The Video=good

I've had a chance to listen to the entire CD, and I have to say "Frantic" and "St. Anger" are by far the poorest songs on the disc. The rest, and many may not like it, sounds alot like Load and Re-Load.

Where people are picking up them sounding like Nickelback I'll never know...to me this disc sounds nothing like Nickelback. It's definitely slighty different, musically, than what they've done before, but it's still very metal, and very Metallica.

    Overall rating: B+

And yes, I'm still buying it tomorrow

I have heard about 5 songs or so, and none of them sounded remotely like Load or Reload. As for the others, I guess I will find out tomorrow.
BTW, how did you get a hold of the songs? Or are you judging the live versions posted on the web off the DVD? Lucky bastard!

Nope...not off of the DVD. And with that, I'm saying no more.

I will, however, say I'm still definitely, with no doubt in my mind, still buying this tomorrow. It's too good not to own the real thing.

As for not sounding like Load/Re-Load--it'll differ from person to person, but there's certain things that remind me of those two albums. In fact, St. Anger sorta sounds like a bit of everyone of their albums... *shrugs* further listens will tell.

This song is utter crap!! I didn't even know it was Metallica until the lady on the radio said it was. I thought it was one of those new preppy rock bands (well maybe preppy isn't the right term, oh well).

Technically it's June 5th now (on the East Coast, at least), so could a moderator please change the subject of this thread to Metallica - "St. Anger" Talkback? Thanks.

Well after spending most of the weekend listening to this little gem I have little doubt that this deserves its place alongside every other Metallica Album. As far as sounding like any of the previous Albums.....it really doesn't. Sometimes you get a wiff of Kill 'em All or Justice. And there is a song or two that does resonate Load, but on a heavier level. St. Anger is really its own "Monster". I can honestly say there is not one song I do not enjoy listening to at this point. Cant wait to see them Aug 2nd at Reliant Stadium.

Heh, I just realized I didn't post my own thoughts.

Let me start off by saying that St. Anger is an above average album, however I don't think it's up there with Metallica's first 5 in terms of quality. However, it's not really that similar of a sound either (as mentioned earlier). Although it's somewhat different, I personally enjoy most of the songs on the album and I've been listening to it quite a bit since I picked it up last Thursday. I'd say it's worth picking up despite the lack of ANY guitar solos. Overall I'll give it a B+.

Saw the boys live in Paris last night, and have to saw that they were absolutely awesome. 'Twas my first time seeing my idols and have to say that I was not disapointed. What struck me though was the fact that they only played one track from the new album, 'St Anger' itself. Not that I'm complaining. While I do think the new album is excellent in its own right, I got to see and hear some real classics, in the front row too. Not to mention the fact that James gave me one of his picks at the end of the gig.
