#1: A Tribute To The Beatles

    Like This Thread!
Hi. Skarr here. In the next few years I'm gunna be making a CD series for myself called "(my name here)'s Tribute Collection". The first one I made was the Beatles. Here are the songs I put on it in order now please rate it on a scale from 1-10!

    1. She Loves You
    2. Lady Madonna
    3. We Can Work It Out
    4. HELP!
    5. I'm Looking Through You
    6. A Hard Day's Night
    7. Nowhere Man
    8. Drive My Car
    9. What Goes On
    10. Yesterday
    11. Yellow Submarine
    12. With A Little Help From My Friends
    13. Get Back
    14. Hey Jude
    15. Eleanor Rigby
    16. Come Together
    17. Love Me Do
    18. Run For Your Life
    19. If I Needed Someone
    20. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
    21. All You Need Is Love
    22. The Ballad Of John And Yoko
    23. In My Life
    24. A Day In The Life
    25. The Long And Winding Road
    26. Let It Be

As soon as I remember what #15 is I'll edit it in.

Also, I got "A Day In The Life" off of the Sgt. Pepper CD, and at the very end of the song there is some weird sentence sung by a lady over and over. Is that supposed to be there? Or is there something wrong with my CD? If it is supposed to be there, why is it there? And what is she saying?

    EDIT: #15 was "Eleanor Rigby"

Yeah, that's supposed to be there. Lennon was responsible for that. Here's what it says in the Sgt Pepper's CD booklet about it:

"After the last droplets of the crashing piano chord of 'A Day in the Life' have evaporated, come a few seconds of 15 kilocycle tone, put there - especially to annoy your dog - at the request of John Lennon. Then, as the coup de grace, there is a few seconds of nonsense Beatle chatter, taped, cut into several pieces and stuck back together at random so that, as George Martin says, purchasers of the vinyl album who did not have an auto return on their record player would say 'What the hell's that?' and find the curious noise going on and on ad infinitum in the concentric run-out groove."

You've chosen a pretty good set of songs. The thing about the Beatles is that every album was great, so there are so many songs that could be put on a tribute CD. I'll give it a 7. It's not perfect, because you've skipped Harrison's great compositions. I would suggest putting "Something," "Here Comes the Sun," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in there. I also don't think "What Goes On" really belongs.

    What's an auto return?

I think it's what stopped the record after it was done playing, lifting the pin off the record. Players without auto return would keep playing so that the nonsense bit at the end of Sgt Pepper would keep playing infinitely until someone turned it off.

There seems to be a large majority of later Beatle songs (post 1965/6-ish). Interesting.

Overall, I like the mix. The only thing I'd change is "Love Me Do" to "Oh Darling" or "I'm a Loser" or "I Am the Walrus" but that's just personal preference on my part. Or actually, I'd substitute in their cover of "Twist and Shout" cuz I love how John's voice was completely trashed and raspy when he sang it and cuz it's still an early Beatle song. Honestly, I'd just make another CD; there are too many good songs.

And good call on ending with "Let It Be". I love how all the instruments creep up on you one by one, always chiming in on an off-beat. And the bass part? Absolutely beautiful.

No "Why Don't We Do It in the Road"??

I was originally gunna have about 40 songs, many of those ones being on it, but my CD could only fit 80 minutes of content, so it was impossible.

Also, the main reason I put "Let It Be" last was because it was the very last song ever recorded by the Beatles as a group. Good reason?

I have a trivia card that says one of Harrison's songs was the last recorded by the Beatles. I can't remember which one.

Take out "What Goes On" and throw in the infinitely superior "Dear Prudence"

Meh, I would rather make a Metallica compilation. The Beatles are one of the more overrated bands in history in my eyes. Of course, not as overrated as Led Zepplin or Jimi Hendrix, but still.

Oh, and whenever I do a compilation, you have to use "The Very Best of <insert band name>". Then I can do my announcer voice and its classic.

I find it impossible to overrate those artists. They deserve all the respect they get. Jimmy Page has more talent in his pinkie finger than most musicians have in their whole bodies.

Hardly. How many bands can successfully recreate their image while retaining a large fan base and experimenting with new technology and recording techniques all at the same time? All of this playing stuff backwards, multi-layered tracks, and use of unconventional instruments (sitar, anyone?) were pioneered by the artists of the 60's and a lot by the Beatles. You think "Good Vibrations" would have had that weird vibrational sound without the Beatles? You think that one hip-hop R&B song by someone (it's a she; I don't know who; I don't listen to that stuff) where it sounds like exotic gibberish but is actually a snippet of her singing placed in the track backwards is a new thing? And multi-layered tracks, taken for granted nowadays, came up in Beatles recordings as early as 1963 (I think; it's definitely in their early pop stage). They play instruments and clap hands at the same time?! No way!! There was a lot of craftsmanship that went into their work, especially later on as they matured and it's craftsmanship, not popularity, that counts.

HelloKittyKat and sKorpia are dead-on with their responses. Groups like the Beatles and Zeppelin deserve every bit of praise they get because they were simply brilliant. If you look at everything that the Beatles have done, there's no doubt of their impact and influence.
