MUSIC: Any fans of Del! the Funky Homosapien or Man...or Astro-Man?

    Like This Thread!
i figure this would be the place to find fans of del & moa?

moa? is on a long hiatus...is it possible that their run is over?

and for you hiero-heads out there: what's the word on the smash bros: the tag-team rhyme efforts of del & casual. individually, they're great...but together: They'd destroy any crew in their way. 2 of the best lyricists, bar none. Better than Nas, Nelly, DMX, Eminem, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Missy, and the rest of those MTV rappers.

I like M.O.A. I've heard them many times and always enjoy their stuff. I've been a fan of surf music for quite a few years now and you can't beat their unique slant on the genre! You might also like Laika and The Cosmonauts. They're nice and weird, too!

I loves me my Del! For some reason I tend to prefer his solo stuff to his work with the Hieroglyphics, though. Of course, better than either is when he teams up with Dan the Automator-- Deltron 3030 is the shizzer!
I haven't heard any of this M.O.A., but since you're obviously a man of impeccable taste, I may have to check it out. (-:

i'm not a fan of rap at all, but del has talent, and i really enjoy his music. unlike 99% of fthe other rap out there he doesn't just cuss every second and he doesn't rap about the same things over and over again.

You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes

I like what I've heard from Del, but that isn't much. Suggest some of the better albums for me to try out.

Del is awesome. It's too bad he's not as widely known as many much less talented (and entertaining) artists.

For my money, I think Del's first and latest works are my two favorites. "I Wish My Brother George Was Here," Del's first solo album, is GREAT. He really shows his funky side in this one. And it's produced by Ice Cube, so that adds a little extra talent to the mix. Good stuff.
At the absolute opposite end of the spectrum, Deltron 3030 is just a masterpiece. Imagine Del's work on the Gorillaz mixed with Pink Floyd and the Matrix and you've got some idea what this album is like.
Those would have to be my two favorite Del projects of all time, although to tell you the truth, nothing with Del's name attached to it has ever disappointed me. Ditto Dan the Automator, for that matter.

    1. I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991). His first record, produced by his cousin Ice Cube. It's got some pretty funny raps: Hoodz Come In Dozenz, P****n' On Ya Steps, The Wacky Adventures of Mass Transit, Ahonetwo Ahonetwo, Sunny Meadowz, Ya Lil Crumbsnatcher. The label, Elektra, was trying to make Del sound like all the gangsta-boogie-funk that was popular at the time. But he was too leftfield to be molded in Ice Cube II. You can tell from the B-sides.

    2. No Need For Alarm (1993). This sophomore effort was purely Del. Cube had no hand in this. This was the way Del wanted his 1st album to sound. Some venomous lyrics ont his one: You're in Shambles, Catch a Bad One, Wrongplace, No More Worries, Miles to Go, BooBoo Heads, etc... This is where Del went off-roading, jumping off the track of popular rap and began dropping rhymes that appealed to skaters & comic book fanboys. The album cover is in comic book format and he ever wore a "Death of Superman" t-shirt on the sphoto shoot. The Bloody S-shield is my favorite. There was even a sweet B-side single w/ Q-Tip (when he was GOOD) called "Undisputed Champions"

    3. Future Development (1997). Del proved to be too off-the-wall for the suits at Elektra so they dropped him before the release of his 3rd LP. Same went for the rest of the Heiro crew, when Jive dropped Souls of Mischief, Casual, & Extra Prolific. They pooled their resources and created the Hieroglyphics Emporium, amking their music their way. In addition to some bootlegged B-sides (cassette only), they released Future Development. It's not his best work but it's still good. Originally a cassette-only release, Hiero has since made it available on CD, w/ a bonus track f. Casual.

    4. Both Sides of the Brain (2000). Del was back w/ a vengeance. Dropping some insult rhymes like Pet Peeves, Soopa Feen, If You Must, & Style Police. There's also some skillful songs: Jaw Gymnastics (w/ Casual), Time is too Expensive, Catch All This (as heard on Tony Hawks ProSkater2), Press Rewind, BMs, Protoculture (his homage to video games), & Signature Slogans (produced by Prince paul w/ whom he'd develop a fruitful partnership).

over the years Del also made appearances on other artists records and singles. Most notably: Swollen Members on "Leftfield" and The Coup's "Repo Man". Then there's his work on the Gorillaz as Russell. Everone loved "Clint Eastwood" but I'm willing to bet 9 out of 10 didn't know who the rapper was (del). And his other song, Rock Tha House, is a beast.

Getting back to Prince Paul. He and the Automator made a cd called The handsome Boy Modeling School. Del appeared on 2 tracks: "Magnetizing" and "The P.J.s" w/ Trugoy of De La Soul. Funny thing about "The PJs". It was originally going to be the title track for the claymation sitcom The PJs on FOX. But it didn't make it to the show soundtrack. They wanted more "popular" artists. Nevermind that the song was hella funny and would've perfectly summarized the show's premise. I hate Suits.

before Deltron 3030, there was a song called "Cyberpunks" on the Strength Magazine CD compilation. In it he's full-on Sci-Fi: talking about mainframes, Tron, The 5th Element, and Starscream. :-)

    5. Deltron 3030. A new frontier for hip-hop, the 31st Century!!! Produced by the Automator w/ Kid Koala on the tables. Great songs abound: 3030, Thigs You Can Do, Positive Contact, Virus, Upgrade, Turbulence, Battlesong, Love Story, Memory Loss.

NEXT: ??? I'm not sure what's next for the D-E-L. I remember hearing he and Casual were working on an album together, calling themselves the Smash Bros (like Mario & Luigi )

    Never heard of Man...or Astro-Man?

Well, if you like Dick Dale, MST3K, & SGC2C, then you'll like these guys. In the last 10 yrs, they've released 13-15 CDs. To get you pointed in the right direction, pick up their EP Deluxe Men In Space or 1000X. Each has about 6 or 7 tracks and will probably set you back $10.

The Astro-Men has 2 phases in their careers:

    1. Pre-Experiment Zero: classic surf sounds, movie excerpts, and covers to tv theme songs

    2. Post-Experiment Zero: their sound evolved when they released Experiment Zero. They didn't abandon their roots but they added more electronic sounds and sounded less "garage" and more professional. Over time, they've created some experimental tracks (tinkering w/ printers, static, robotics, and electricity)

I've seen 3 live shows: amazing. Their stage sets are both aesthetic and functional.

I've collected many posters over the years, promos from their many gigs. Their music has inspired many great works of poster art. And their 7" singles are hard to come by too. There's even a 5" record!!! (a cd-sized vinyl record)

I bet! Do you remember if they did a cover of "Squad Car" when you saw them? That's an awesome song, though they do the, in my opinion, inferior version by Eddie and the Showmen, as does everyone else who covers it. The original by The Bel Airs is much better!
