the only album in the beach boys' official album discography to hit #1 (not counting compilations). unfortunately it's a lacking album. once again, the covers are the album's downfall. i guess when the track listing was being decided, someone figured fans would want to hear songs not appearing on previous albums than hearing the same songs again. i would be more impressed if more beach boys original songs were chosen instead of over half the material being covers.

    *** stars

this album was recorded from 2 shows in sacramento on august 1st 1964. i own a bootleg of both complete shows (from the original master tapes), and a few studio tracks to be used as overdubs on the live recordings. as a completist, i want a complete show on a live recording, with the tracks in their original order as they were played. i would love to see the beach boys concert be reissued in a deluxe edition with both shows. i'm sure the main excuse is "the screaming audience make's the audio unusable". i say bull. i hope technology has evolved enough by now that we can get these tapes cleaned up. even my bootlegs sound good enough to be released officially (with the exception of literally one or two songs). a complete beach boys live show, at the height of their popularity, and brian wilson still playing with the live group would make this an essential beach boys album to own, and easily a 4 to 5 star release.

here's the track listings for the 2 shows (as you can see, the song selection is more impressive than the official release):
