    Pop Music....why?

    Like This Thread!
I was thinking of ideas for stories to write, today, & the best I came up with, is this...

Two friends, a guy & a girl. The girl gets "noticed", & becomes a succesful pop star. Keeping her friend close, but unfortunitly, all he can do, now, is explain to her how much Pop music, & pop stars suck.
Hehe. It got me thinking about how much I hate all of that music.
Boy Bands: Are they SO incompetent that they need 5 guys to sing one song? Oooh...they can dance, to! I once saw an episode of MTVs "CRIBS", where the "Tough Guy" from Backstreet was showing off his cute little puppies.....
Teenaged Girls: "If you get fake boobs like Britini, I'm gona kick yer butt". Hehe, that was a line from my story. Uhm...they're...how do you say...stupid? "I want to be respected as an artist, an individual, and a person". Uhm..then stop stripping down, & doing the same thing the other pop-girls are doing?

Its all the same. Ultimately, I dont really have anything against the music(Sometimes a song is released that I kinda like). Its just the people involved, & how they are everything I am against. If you have 5 people in your "band"..and NONE of them plays the instruments.....heh...

My tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature informs me that you are troubled...

    Re: Pop Music....why?

I think Popstars really defined what pop music is about.....the corporations controlled it, the girls were interchangeable and replaceable by about 10 000 others who tried out. Maybe a few girls could say they auditioned because they loved to sing, but the five girls were thrown together without history- they didn't even know each other. There's no heart whatsoever.

I really don't like pop music either. I think all those boy bands that girls go crazy over sing like girls. They really do!! And I know what you mean about them never playing their own instruments. How much talent does it take to sing a song and then have some people come and digitally make it sound better with computers? Well, I technically don't know that for a fact, but I'm sure it happens a lot!

I guess I've always been one to go against what's popular because I don't want to be someone who just wants to be "in style." And to prove my point, my favorite types of music are classical and Celtic. I love my piano...hehe

    they need five guys...

because each guy sings a different part... Take NSYNC for example... Lance sings bass, Justin sings alto, Joey and JC sing tenor, and chris is baritone... like barbershop or chamber choir...

Hehe. Reminds me of why I so much loved the Jack in the Box ad that parodied the boy bands. Had nothing to do with selling burgers. Just a gratuitous slam at boy bands.

But do they harmonize well? From the very little I've heard from them, it seems to me like they could probably do the same job with 2 singers. But, they're a manufactured band, so it's obvious why there's 5 of them.

Hey even if you don't like NSYNC, have a listen to their song "I Thought She Knew." It's a capella, so no BGM to get in the way. You can actually hear each person sing they're respective parts. Another good one is their rendition of "O Holy Night." They are quite talented.

Hmm...I guess zero zero nine could be right about the reason for 5 singers, but I'm pretty sure that another large factor in having 5 of them is so that each can appeal to a different kind of girl. They all have their own "roles," and pre-selected personalities.
Most people here say they don't like pop music, and I guess I can't blame them if they associate the genre with the acts that seems to currently be dominating the airwaves. But the truth is, there is a lot of good "pop" music out there, but it's just not reached by mainstream audiences. Music which is actually written by the people who perform it! I highly recommend Solex. Go to CDNow or something and listen to clips!
On a side note....anyone else getting a kick out of the plight of the Backstreet Boys? First one lands himself in rehab, and then more recently, another is arrested for having an "arguement" in a bar. Oh yeah, they're on their way out.

    Technically, you all are right

Take it from me, their true talent(or lack there of) starts showing when they sing live. Also, just because they don't play the guitar or drums doesn't mean they don't use instruments. Their vocals are some of the best instruments they can use, and it takes ALOT of time just to exercise your vocals so you can sound a little decent. Also factor in that these guys do high energy dance steps too while on stage. It's not as easy as some of you think. As for why they usually have five guys in a group, I would say because 1)it's a formula that's been working since the 50s, and 2)it's makes their sound more "full". I remember the show "Making the Band" did a couple of episodes on why they needed five guys instead of four, and the answer was that they sounded bad with just four guys.

I have a strong hatred for most pop music...there are a couple of songs that I like, but VERY few. BSB, Nsync, Britney Spears? They all make me sick. I'm into most rock...stuff like Manson, U2, DMB, Slipknot, Flickerstick, Incubus, Mudvayne, System of a Down, and stuff like that. Sorry if I veered off topic there...I've heard of the show "Pop Stars" but could never get the courage to watch it

I don't care for pop music, either. I'm finding myself listening to New Age music more than that cookie-cutter stuff lately. New Age music has the heart and soul of the singer meshed into it (at least I think so), and I really find myself becoming lost in the music. It's really relaxing and quite helpful if you need inspiration.

There are a few pop songs I like and will listen to, but not that many. Sadly, my sister loves Britney Spears and plays "I'm Your Slave" on high volume... it drives me up the wall! Way to be a role model, Britney

    I've never asked this before...

but why do people have that hatred for Pop music? I know ALOT of people(especially on the internet) seem to literally hate it, but I never really heard a reason. I can understand if it's just "not your cup of tea", so to speak, but does the fact that they don't play instruments really take you to the point of hating it, or the fact that they were put together by a record label?

Here's my major reasons...they don't play instruments...their voices are almost damn computerized (Britney Spears frickin lip-synchs are every TV concert of hers I see), most of their fans don't even like their music...they just like them because they're "hot" (trust me...I went to this punk-festival a couple of weeks ago and some of the preppies showed up and left when they discovered they didn't look or sound like Blink 182), and I just flat out hate the music.

That should be "on every TV concert" not "are every TV concert"...

*LOL* All pop fans aren't like that, but I can see how it would turn you off to the music though. Britney annoys me to no end, and teenyboppers make people like me, who just like the music for the music, look bad.

Oh boy, throw another log onto the cliched MB topics scrap heap.

If you have even a modicum of musical taste you'll realize that the Talentless Clones are just that: talentless, pre-packaged clones. They may never go away, but thank God there was good music produced before them that is now easily accessible a la Morpheus or some other file-sharing program.

Also, it's quite futile to argue that they have talent. At best they merely have good voices, but any group of five brainless idiots with good voices can achieve some sort of harmony. Their songs are recycled, they cannot play any instruments, and they cannot write music or even the lyrics for their own songs. Their voices also need to be beefed up with synthesizers and whatnot, further highlighting the fact that they've taken music as a concept and deficated all over it.

blah blah blah......You can call them clones, brainless idiots, whatever, but you have to admit that it takes a little talent to go on stage and try to sing and dance at the same time. Also, you just can't use the argument that they don't write their own material or can't play instruments, because that doesn't hold true anymore. Sure, lyrics like "I've been sittin here, can't get you off my mind, I've tried my best to be a man and be strong..." isn't exactly greatest lyrics out there, but atleast the guys(Nsync in this case) put a little effort into writing their own material.

BTW, about their voices being made to sound better, it's a program called autotune, I believe. Almost ALL artists(and I'm not just talking about pop acts) use this to make their voice sound clearer on the album. This is the reason so many acts today sound like garbage live instead of sounding like the person on the record.

I hate pop for most of the reasons SilentBob stated. The female singers claim to be role models of young girls while half naked. ("I'm a Slave 4 U"...great title, can't even spell 'for' and 'you'.) The boy bands sound interchangeable. I can't tell one group from another. All the songs sound the same.

In short...not my cup of tea.

My friend, her mother, and I were driving home from school listening to the classic rock station. We formulated a theory based on the songs we heard:

The boy bands and singers (ie Britney, Christina) of today won't last another ten years. As soon they hit 30, the fans will lose interest because they'll be considered "old." Meanwhile, the songs from the classic rock station are still being played today.

If this will ever be proven, I can only hope.

That's not talent. By that definition, comparitively speaking, a 3rd-string pro-football player has talent, when that's just not true, or else they wouldn't be in 3rd string. There are millions and millions of morons who can jump on a stage after a few weeks of rehearsal and LIP SYNC TO MUSIC FOR A FEW HOURS. The only talent needed there is the ability to move one's legs and the ability to keep in sync with music. Most retarded people can do at least that.

And no, when every song sounds like every other song, that doesn't show that they're the least bit creative.

I don't see how this is an excuse for their lack of talent.

Well obviously this will happen, and it'll be irrelevant. They can all easily be replaced, since all you need is a bunch of pretty boys or sluts that are young. Not at all difficult to replace.
