not the best marvel direct to dvd i've seen
This film was much better than I thought it'd be. It wasn't great, but by the end I was on the edge of my seat. I'll say this: I was very surprised by some of the turns in this film. I found Loki surprsingly likable. Usually I find him annoying, but here he seemed like he meant well. Oh and LOL at the 10 second cameo from the Enchantress. She manages to flirt even in a tiny role.
However, I found the Warriors Three to be tiresome. The braggarts aren't good for much.![]()
This was a fun film, and Marvel was smart to release this around the same time as the LA Thor film.
Random quote (changes once in a while)
"I have sacrificed much to achieve peace. So too must a new generation sacrifice to maintain that peace. Responsibility! Duty! Honour! These are not mere virtues to which we must aspire! They are essential to every soldier, to every king!"
- Odin, Thor
What's the cheapest place folks have seen this in stores?
I didn't see it below the $14.99 range anywhere today.
A really, really good movie. Maybe my expectations were low going in but I still think this movie was great and will surprise a lot of people. The only downside is the animation which could have been better. But I thought the story was really good and not at all what I was expecting. There's a really cool scene at the end of the movie where Loki kills Algrim and that really shocked me. I wasn't expecting that at all. But I think if this movie just had some better animation it could really come out on top as one of the best Marvel DTVs. This movie also does serve as a good prelude to the big screen Thor movie too. A really good effort I have to say.
I see someone gave this film half a star. I'm interested in that opinion for discussion.

Watched it yesterday. A lot better than I thought it would be even though I would have preferred a story from Thor's adulthood. Parts of it reminded me of the Wonder Woman DTV from 2009 (especially the scene where Thor sneaks into the Valkyrie training camp). Hard to believe that was Mr. Sinister (Chris Birtton) from the 90s X-men TAS voicing Odin.
Yeah. That came out of nowhere. That was a defining moment for Loki right there. When push came to shove, Thor showed mercy, and Loki caved to his anger. It funny cause throughout the whole film, I kind of forgot who he would become, then in one moment: BAM!!
Just like that, we see a bit of his darker character. Ironically, it came out of love for his father.
The Hypocrite Rises....
I saw it and liked it quite a bit. It was a little slow in the beginning, but then picked up after the sword of Surtur was found.
There are some things that certainly make this a possible prequel to the live-action THOR film, but then there are things that seem to conflict, or at least don't flow very well, if it were to take place before the live-action film. For instance, it becomes kind of redundant that Thor would repeat the same mistake in both movies of him going against his father's wishes and into Jotenheim, causing a war with the Frost Giants. Just makes it hard to believe Thor would do the same exact thing twice, no matter how arrogant he was. Also, in this feature we have a romance between Thor and Sif, which appeared non-existent in the live-action film.
One thing I was disappointed about was that we never see Thor receive the hammer Mjolnir. I know the film wasn't about that, but it would have been a nice closing scene. Besides that lack of Mjolnir and the redundancy of plot, I'd say this was a fairly well done animated film, and like the live-action film, Loki is just great with some nice added hints at his secret origin.
I actually was a bit surprised with how well I enjoyed this DTV. I must admit, when I first learned of this film I wasn't too thrilled about it. I wanted to see a film more about the adventures of an adult Thor instead of his youthful days. The early previews began to intrigue me and I took a chance and purchased it. Certainly glad I did, it was worth it.
I'd rank it with Dr. Strange as an under-rated but well worth it, non-obvious Marvel tale..
glad that there was real peril and "real" violence in the film..
the conceit of the Nine realms being connected by a Great Sea of Space was intriguing (what happens when you fall overboard?)
... interesting to see that the Warriors Three were apparently telling fibs about their extended sojourns up untl now.. Their characterizations were on-point..
the subplot with the Valkyries was good.. how often has the Valkyrior been portrayed as the equivalent of Paradise Island?
--- Ah.. I expected more of a revelation on Loki's origins in the interaction with the frost giants..
I liked Amora's cameo.. sexy..
,, No Balder? ah well..
the dark elf storyline was unexpected, and a fascinating arc for the character.. a great climax..
Too bad there won't be a sequel to this (presumably)..
With Great Power also comes a Great Responsibility...
I felt this movie was kind of "meh". The dark elf's arc could have been handled better, the animation wasn't really all that great, and Valkyires don't equal Amazons (I'm unfamiliar with the Thor comics, so maybe that's what they are their, but still it's annoying). I really liked Loki in this, though, and his moment near the came out of nowhere. To me, this felt kind of like a pilot to a non-existent series, like Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. I'm still craving more Thor after the live-action movie though...
I watched this and think what others have said, it was better than anticipated. Since they sat on it for so long, perhaps they had time to perfect it. I don't know, but it was pretty good.
Kinda feels bittersweet, cause this is to be the last. Hopefully, Marvel makes enough dough to justify some more animated DTV's.

I have to say I'm disappointed in the sales numbers for Thor: Tales of Asgard. I wasn't expecting it to be a big seller like some of the last DTVs but this is a real low debut:
It's nice to see good Blu-ray numbers but those DVD numbers are real low.The final animated feature co-produced between Marvel Animation and Lionsgate Home Entertainment moved 67,000 DVD copies in its first week, along with an impressive 29,000 units in Blu-ray editions in the same timeframe. Combined, Thor: Tales of Asgard sold an estimated 96,000 total home video units in its first week of sales, for the week ending May 22nd, 2011.

Looks like this will finally premiere on Disney XD on Sunday morning. I'm a little surprised that it took them this long though. I always figured that it was best that they get an airing for a dtv movie in while the sales still count ( in order to keep awareness of it out there) but I really have no idea how this process works.

I would have liked a little warning the premier came out of no where. I'm enjoying it so far though. I do hope Disney continues with Marvel DTVs themselves.
