Favorite "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" Character (Two Seasons Down Edition)

    Like This Thread!

The first poll was made way back when the show was in its infancy. There have been other polls since then, but none in the same model as the original. So let's see where things stand now. I recognize that this can be an extremely difficult field to narrow down to a single choice, but for the sake of discussion, try.

I'm tempted to vote for Chrysalis simply because she showed up at just the right time to get me interested in the show again. I know she didn't have a ton of depth, but I liked everything about her. I really liked her design, as well as those of her army, and would probably use her as my avatar if not for the fact that I've grown to like my Kyle Hyde one. That said, I'm voting for the same character that I voted for way back when: Twilight Sparkle. It's her show, although less-so in season two, and I like what they've done with her. "It's About Time" was the last episode that I thoroughly enjoyed prior to the finale - remember, I skipped a few - and I just find her to be a ton of fun. She was great in the finale.

Rarity is still my top alternate. I'm not sure why the unicorns dominate the top of my favorites list, but there are times where I consider her to be my true favorite. Those are usually after episodes where she had a strong showing, but I still do believe that she is the best voiced pony and those strong performances by Tabitha St. Germain do wonders for her.

Pinkie Pie is still at the bottom of my list. Well, she's above the Cutie Mark Crusaders, but it is what it is. Many people love Pinkie Pie, but I've never been a huge fan of random humor. Well, not her brand of random humor. She amuses me in some instances, but in general, I don't like her. "A Friend in Deed" was brutal.

Edit: Ack, Discord threw off my alphabetical ordered poll. Being a proponent of chaos, I'm sure he'd be just fine with that...

I too had no idea who to pick between Rarity and Twilight Sparkle. Plus Luna and Chrysalis also hold a decent place in my heart. Must be the horn

In the end I picked Twilight too, she's just so adorkable! :anime: I do agree with your assessment of Rarity's voice. Tabitha St-Germain is just amazing as Rarity!

So true. Given her personality and some of the funnier bits involving her, it's hard NOT to love her.

At a close second is Pinkie Pie, given some of the bizarre things she does in the show.

My answer shouldn't surprise anyone that reads my comments regularly.

I want to say that there are many great characters on the show. I love Rarity, and Fluttershy was great (despite not getting a lot of attention) in Season Two. Fluttershy really impressed me in the two episodes she starred in during the second season, especially "Hurricane Fluttershy". I guess you can say I'm becoming more of a "Flutterfan". How can anyone not like her?

With that being said, my personal favorite is still Spike. He's been a consistent favorite of mine (my favorite ponies never stay consistent) since the first season. I find myself rooting for characters that seem to be the "underdog" or highly underrated. He's definitely humorous, he's a well-designed character, very lovable, mature for his age (but does show he can act like any young kid, which is great) -- he's got a great personality for a series character, and I see him as someone that has a lot of potential for the series. He's hard for me to dislike as a character; I never get tired of watching him.

    My Rankings:

Spike: Though still my all-time favorite character on this show, and not just because he's the best little sibling character I've bared witness to in Western animated fare as of recent, he could still use some work - and by that, I mean a better episode focused on him that isn't Dragon Quest (only because I feel that episode is so terrible that I'm proud to this day to not have had it deleted from my ITunes!).

    Dragon Quest
hasn't stopped him from being my favorite character on this show, but it's going to take some work to convince me he's worth watching this show for after all that...

Rarity: Surprisingly, she's managed to be my favorite pony out of all 6, and she still is... But she's not my top favorite character. However, the episodes that did focus on her are still my top favorites of the series.

Twilight Sparkle: She's alright so far - but I'm thankful she was given less episodes to let other characters develop for the most part... The writers for the most part, are coming a long way to properly develop each and every character (Twilight included), but Twilight could use more conflicts besides being shown there's more to life than studying magic and being a genius.

Though it's better than her being a troublemaker - no one wants to see that!

    Applejack:
Unlike Season 1, this character has really grown on me - I have nothing but positive things to say about every episode focused on her in Season 2, so yeah. Nothing else to say here!

Fluttershy: she's really starting to grow on me in a big way - that's all I have to say about that...

Pinkie Pie: she's been entertaining just as much in Season 1, but she's still not one my favorites, to be honest with all of you guys... Baby Cakes was a bit of a letdown for me, and A Friend In Deed (though I don't hate this episode at all, mostly because of the awesome slapstick on display here) doesn't help her case for those who might think that she's a bit... annoying at times.

Rainbow Dash: Easily my least favorite. While I found Mysterious Mare-Do-Well to be "Meh"- Tier- worthy (meaning I don't hate it, but am disappointed with its problems being so obvious), the only episode she really stuck out for me positively was Hurricane Fluttershy. Other than that, still my least favorite, just like in Season 1...

And the less said about the princess characters (who are clearly queens like Starbro says, and I believe it, especially Celestia), the better. Then again, I'm glad focus was put on better getting to know characters worth focusing on, so it's not like I'm missing out on Celestia and Luna doing royalty noise/spouting royalty jargon.

And if I have to say anything about the CMCs, it's that they still need less epsiodes with them together, obsessing over their nonsense - more episodes that develop them as individual characters would be nice, thank you very much (though compared to Season 1, the episodes that focused on them were much better than Season 1's adventures with them were better, if I were to be honest with you guys!).

    Peace.
Tropes that are ruining Western/European Animation (and any animes involving school):
    Spoiler:
    1. Twins and/or Rich Kids as antagonists; Bullies in general. 2. Annoying jerk sibling characters and/or General sibling characters who hate each others' guts. 3. Hidden Caucasian male dominance (usually subverted to be female in anime, which can be equally as bad – and a real turnoff in general!).

Rarity is still my number one with Applejack as my number two. Rarity for her voicing, over the top antics, and style. Applejack for her steadfastness, hilariousness as a 'straight man', and her kindness.

The only thing that season two changed about my ranking is I've come to like RD and Fluttershy, my least favorite characters in season one. In s1 I felt both of them were under developed and boring. But May The Best Pet Win, Read It and Weep, and Putting Your Hoof Down did wonders for them in my book. I finally appreciate RD's awesomeness and Fluttershy's cuteness.

AJ all the way for me.

    Its funny though, I have my qualms and likes about most of the cast which I find good about a show like this. At least there are things I can actually enjoy about them even if there are things that I dislike, such as;

*With Twi, I was really afraid that some of the writers were going to go a bit overboard with the entire 'Twi is OCD/ Twi is a shut-in' and all this other stuff that made me dislike her when the show began. As the series progressed, I was glad that there were times when they made her evolve past being a shut in with SPESHUAL POW'AHS that I still don't really get. I understand that her position and magic make her more powerful than other ponies, but for the most part, her 'magic' seems rather meh to me, if only because as being as touted as being so powerful and talented, I was expecting,,,more? I mean, people compare to Jean-Freaking-Grey in powers and even with all the cool things she can do, I still don't see it but then again, that's me.

*I know that AJ gets a lot of flack for being 'boring' but to me, she's the most relatable of the ponies which is why I like her so much. In a way, I sometimes feel that an Earth pony SHOULD have been the main head of the pack if only to get her POV of what its like to be amoungst other ponies who have other talents but I digress. AJ just seems well-rounded to me so...yeah. She is my top pick.

*Rarity comes in second with me to how she was able to turn the 'fashonita' trope upside down. Yeah, she can be a bit of a drama-queen at times but if there is one thing I LOVE about her its her talent. She is into all things glamour but unlike a lot of other characters who would fall into this trope, she doesn't whine about stuff like a spoiled little brat who wants to use her parent's credit cards. If this pony wants something, she WORKS for it and I have to admire her characterization for that, especially when it comes to her talents for making clothing on her own. Basically, she has SKILL and a great skill at that.

*Dash was sitting on a teeter-tooter this season only because I think that peopel often mistake 'tomboy' for 'fratboy'. During the middle of season two, Dash was kind of hit hard with a lot of bad storylines that brought out more of her JERKY nature rather than her BRASH nature. One of the reasons I like Dash as character from season one was because she was tough, playful, and funny. She's the type of pony who isn't afraid to get messy and even if she can be a bit loud a times, she still has a good heart. Season 2 however...let's just say that AFTER Mare-Do-Well, things got a LOT better with Dash. I'm just GLAD someone remembered that she's TOUGH and LOYAL, not PUSHY and STANDOFFISH.

*Fluttershy, as cute as she, is low on my list if only because after a while, I can only take so much of the shrinking-violet character type. I know people didn't like Flutterrage from Season 1 at the gala but I stull thikn that was one of her best (and funniest) moments since it showed that Fluttershy did have other emotions other than 'look doe-eyed and shy', In fact, all the moments where she turns into a mama-bear are my favorite Fluttershy moments because it once again shows that shy people aren't COWARDS even if they are mousy. When people mess with them or their friends, they're ready to jump into the battle. Granted, a lot of the fandom misses this point completely and have basically turned Fluttershy into a weakling which...urgh, yeah. I won't get into that.

*And finally, we have Pinkie. I'm going to be honest with you guys on this and I know a lot of people are not going to like it. Pinkie is cute, Pinkie can be funny but to me she is the most annoying and overused character in the show. What she suffers from is too much over-exposure. I know people love her 4th-wall breaking and all that but after a while, too much of that can just ruin the show and run Pinkie out of her gag. I know people didn't like Baby Cakes but one of the reasons I DID was because it took Pinkie down a lot of notches which I think she needed to be DESPERTLY. I feel that Pinkie gets away with a bit too much compared to the other characters, sometimes going on the verge of being a freaking Karma Houdini. Baby Cakes however taught her that at times, BEING GOOFY AND SPAZZY ISN'T THE ANSWER FOR EVERYTHING.After Feeling Pinkie Keen and a lot of other scenes within the show, it was just so satisfying to see Pinkie learn a lesson where it did feel like she had to go through a lot in order to learn it.

Seriously, I LIKE Pinkie but she, along with Dash at times, are two of the most over-exposed characters in the show ESPECIALLY in the mech that HAS been made for adults. At Hot Topic, there are nothing but Pinkie and Dash Ts and NO sign of any of the other characters which annoys the heck out of me. Its like these two have become memes and the problems with memes is that they get worn REALLY fast which is something I don't want to see happen to these two characters. Seeing and hearing 20% Cooler is getting old as is the 'FOR-EV-ER!' thing that Pinkie is known for. Some spotlight needs to be put on the other characters since they are the main protagonist as well.

As others have mentioned, Spike needs to be featured a lot more as well and not just as little spots where he made to be the butt-monkey of some gags. Wasn't Spike supposed to be Twi's longest known friend? From the way he is featured at times, it seems like he's more of a punchbag at times but again, I digress.

My favorite Pony is Applejack as well, with Twilight Sparkle coming in at a very close second.

In my youth, I would've written AJ off as the most "boring" character and not bothered with her, but she offers a welcome oasis of clam and rationality in the midst of the others' collective craziness, which I find appealing about her character. AJ doesn't have crazy powers like the other ponies, but having them would actually go against her character. I think Applejack is the best 'representation' of the Earth pony tribe. The Apple shtick and Ozark persona are nice touches.

Twilight is runner-up for me. I agree the writers tend to overdo Twilight's obsessive-compulsive tendencies, but it is refreshing to see a book-smart character who isn't a total loser or outcast, and actually has some skills. At times I think they could utilize her magic a bit more, but I relaize that such a thing can be a slippery slope: you don't want to rely too much on magic powered characters as your mage character could easily cross over into Mary Sue territory.

The 3rd character in my top tier is Spike, though I feel he's a much underutilized element on the show. The little guy is funny, never boring when he's around and the whole 'dragon in a world of ponies' thing could be accentuated a lot more and for better effect than it has been so far. I really hope Spike gets more opportunities in the limelight in the future.

The remaining members of the Mane 6 all fall into the lesser tier for me, but each of them have their moments and each are a personality rather than a cipher.

I was prepared to dislike Rarity when I first saw her; I figured she'd just be a stereotypical upper-class snoot, but there's a level of depth, skill and maturity to her character that I find refreshing despite her drama queen tendencies.

Rainbow Dash is entertaining, though the writers tend to overdo her egotistical jerk persona, and I also think the '20% cooler' line has become a very tired meme now (though I loved the line when I first heard it). She's a little overexposed, but I still like RD.

I don't dislike Fluttershy, but (no offense to fans) I often find her to the most boring pony of the group, not AJ. Mainly because I'm not all that into super-passive characters. Fluttershy has her moments, but the more aggressive ponies click with me much more.

And finally there's Pinkie Pie. Don't get me wrong; I don't hate Pinkie, but Pinkie Pie is easily THE most overused, overdone, over-quoted and overexposed character on the show. Pinkie Pie is to the My Little Pony franchise what Michaelangelo is to the TMNT franchise. Yeah, she's funny and crazy she has the ability to partially break the 4th wall, but all of those things are best taken in small doses; Pinkie can (and has) easily become irritating if overdone. The fact that PP is the character most often used to represent the entire show and franchise at the expense of the others is a tad annoying.

Honorable mention goes to the royals, Celestia and Luna, though they haven't utilized like they could or should be, especially Luna.

I forgot to mention that as far as secondary characters go I really like Cheerilee. She's sweet, she's got a really nice voice and is a dedicated teacher but you can also feel she has depth she doesn't show her pupil much. A lot of scenes in Hearts & Hooves day, when she isn't under the potion's effect, shows some of her more cynical side. She's obviously been buggered about not having a boyfriend more than once in the past I'd like to see more of her... girl deserves to find a special sompony for real. We've seen her with Twilight a few times, I'd like to see them explore than friendship.

Rarity can be a drama queen but you can tell she KNOWS she's a drama queen and still do it. I mean the whole pulling a sofa to her, that was just meta, playing up her own role.

I hope we get to see more of Shining Armor and Cadence, they were interesting. You don't see much of the real Cadence but you know she loves having fun, doesn't take her title of Princess too seriously and DEEPLY loves Shining Armor. After her part of This Day Aria its hard to think her love isn't genuine. Shining Armor seems like a pretty solid and dependable kinda guy, not the most exciting but certainly someone you can count on.

Okay after some bits of thought, (and a rewatch of Sweet and Elite), behold my list of ponies and my opinion of them.

    1. Rarity - Like Season 1, Rarity continues to dominate when it comes to being my favourite pony. Now that they've established her character a bit near the tail end of Season 1, it seems that the writers have managed to work their way around with the character and not only play to her strengths but allow for Tabitha to bring in remarkably dynamic performances. Out of all the characters, I was exceptionally worried if they would ruin Rarity by simplifying her character to stereotype. But thankfully, they didn't and she comes out the most well-rounded, dynamic, multi-talented (Fashion designer AND Barber) and vibrant characters of the show, and so much so that I believe she is the only pony of the Mane 6 that can have a strong stand alone episode to herself.

In a way I find her to be kinda like the Osaka (from Azumanga Daioh) of the Mane 6 in the fact that is a sui generis character, a class of her own. Whereas Osaka was a new class of flake, Rarity is a new class of fashionista.

In short it still remains that Rarity 4ever.

    2. Rainbow Dash - RD kinda grew on me this season (as well revisiting Season 1 episodes). She has quite a bit of great reactions and pieces to her name, and her focus episodes (aside of course from MMD, which is just some separate microcosm that best be forgotten) show her to be quite fun and quite quirky. You gotta hand it to her in episodes like Hurricane Fluttershy, where she is able to work on levels of loyalty, determination, guts and what have you. She rose up a bit for me.

    3. Twilight - She's become quite a bit more adorkable this season indeed. Her spotlight episodes were very good, and her presence in a lot of the episodes was well-used and not very shoe-horned in. Her reduction in presence kinda stopped her from being too oversaturated, and Tara Strong continues to know how to make her well... Twilightlicious.

    4. Applejack -
AJ knows how to grow on you. Even though she's in the majority of the season's episodes, when she's not even a part of one I kinda feel something's missing without her down-to-earth poniness. She knows how to remain the most consistently written of the Mane 6, and her two episodes this season were high points to be sure.

    5. Fluttershy -
Not gonna lie, Fluttershy I find to be much more overrated than RD. Her demureness is endearing but quite frankly in light of the other three before Rarity she was just pretty good this season. That said, she was quite exceptional in her two main episodes. I dunno, this seems like a good place to put her.

    6. Pinkie Pie - Shame really, but Pinkie really kinda dropped down a bunch from being Number 2 last season. I think it's just that here, her episodes were remarkably weak in their own way and despite all the gags and Smile Smile Smile it shows that they seem to at times put her antics before her character than vice versa. That leads to episodes with relatively questionable moral values like A Friend In Deed to episodes which could've needed bit more exposition and pacing like the MMMystery on the Friendship Express, which again mostly focused on antics. Cute antics to be sure, but still... Antics before character.

Well that was hard. I like everypony, but... here's my ranking.

Interesting. Has Pinkie Pie fallen out of favor? She came in second in the original poll, and in her character thread, most people voted that she was their favorite out of the main ponies. I know a lot of people were irritated by her in "A Friend In Deed", but I skipped the baby episode and the train episode, so I'm not really sure how that turned out.

Pinkie just lacks subtlety and depth compared to other characters. She was at her best in Baby Cakes that's for sure. She can be cute and funny but not much else... and she, alongside Rainbow Dash, just so happen to be one of the easiest character to write wrong. Its too easy for her to devolve into crazy antics.

    What he said.

Pinkie always seems to work best as either a foil or a supporting character. Her supporting character moments in Season 2 were amazing for the majority part, and her inclusion with "It's About Time" provided a nice comparison to the worried Twilight. It's just that when she's the focus, she needs a foil to keep her in line and everything, or else she goes off the rails and so goes the story.

Baby Cakes, Huntsman, was not a bad episode per se, and it was probably the best written character wise for Pinkie. It's just that at the end of it all, it's a "Take care of babies but it's harder than it looks" story, and those are usually a dime a dozen. MMMystery was a pretty good endeavour with a lot of great gags and everything, but like I said, it wasted most of its time with Pinkie's wild accusations and after thinking about it, comes off as a better written MMDW, albeit one where the "Hey [insert pony here], you're doing it wrong!" was handled better.

For me Pinkie has her moments. I enjoyed all of her season two episodes more than I thought I would. But what season two really taught me is Pinkie is most hilarious when paired with Rarity or Applejack. Twilight's too sardonic a straight man, but AJ's honesty and Rarity's drama make great foils for Pinkie's zaniness. This is why Hearth's Warming Eve and Putting Your Hoof Down were so enjoyable.

My ranking of Pinkie Pie hasn't changed from before; she and Fluttershy were my least favorites among the Mane 6 during the first season, and those rankings are the same now.

I agree that Pinkie works best when paired with a more logical character to keep her in line, like Twilight, Applejack or Rarity. Part of what makes Pinkie work is her contrast to the more "normal" characters on the rest of the show. When it's just Pinkie alone, it's just nonstop wackiness without any moments of coming up for air.

I agree with a lot of what was said about Pinkie. I still love her, but I have to say that she's now behind Rarity, Fluttershy, Spike, and Twilight as my favorite regulars on the show (names listed not in order). A lot of her episodes during the second season focused way too much on her, and at least in my view, her episodes are better when she interacts more with other main characters. I may be in the minority when I say this, but I actually preferred her Season One episodes over Season Two.

I know a lot of people were irritated by her in "A Friend In Deed", but I skipped the baby episode and the train episode, so I'm not really sure how that turned out.

Baby Cakes wasn't bad at all and neither was the train episode. I juts found that BC was a better Pinkie episode because its one where her antics worked AGAINST her and showed that being silly isn't going to work all the time. It wasn't like 'A Friend in Deed', which I also didn't mind, where by the end it feels like Pinkie learned something but SURPIRSE! She was right anyway, like she always is!

Baby Cakes truly felt like an episode where she actully learned something and goes along with episode like 'Applebuck Season', 'Feeling Pinkie Keen', 'Stare Master', 'Sonic Rainboom', and 'Suited for Success' where the characters learned that using their traits, talent, or sometimes elements to the extreme isn't a good thing and can backfire on them. Baby Cakes was that for Pinkie and while she did learn something in her other two focus episodes, Baby Cakes felt more like it hit home.

I think after seeing the popularity the character had during the first season, the writers tried to put MORE of that into the show but the problem with that is that not everyone LOVES Pinkie, at least to the point where they want to see her wackiness NEVER, EVER, END. This sort of takes away the cuteness factor she had and just renders her annoying to the point where you wonder why no one else has told her to just STOP which in a real life situation, would have happened MANY-A-TIMES....but this is a show about cartoon ponies so I can't expect something like THAT to happen, especially when the fan-base might erupt into a 'HOW DARE YOU DO THAT TO PINKIE!!?' tirade. XD

It might be that my greatest fear for the show is that they make Pinkie one big Karma Houdini where they show its okay for HER to annoy people with her antics since she's Pinkie and its supposed to be FUNNY, while another character will get the big lesson speech on how its bad for them and their friends.
