    G.I. Joe Renegades - "Shipwrecked" - Talkback [04/16]

    Like This Thread!

Today @ 7:30 PM ET on The Hub

I always liked Shipwreck. It will be interesting to see what this version of him will be like.

Sea captain Shipwreck helps the Joes transport a bio-viper canister to Abernathy in Washington.
Edit: The Hub uploaded a preview on YouTube, but it's not for this episode. It's appears to be for Castle Destro. If that one airs instead of Shipwrecked, I'll edit this thread accordingly.

The episode is airing now, and it sounds like the Shipwreck episode so far (they mentioned a possbily toxic bio-viper substance)...

This Shipwreck appears to be a merchant sailor; a far cry from the original Shipwreck (and he's not exactly Mr. Personality, either)...

It sounds like Castle Destro (which is in Scotland, IIRC) will be the subject of the next episode. It looks like Shipwreck is going to be with them a little longer. Oh yeah, the USS Flag made an appearance too. I think that was where the Joes sometimes launched from.

Overall though, this episode seemed okay. It looked like (I'm not sure) they got one step closer to proving their innocence.

Good old cranky Shipwreck. Just a little less funny than the original one because he didn't have the goofy Jack Nicholson voice and a parrot to argue with.

I liked how he named his ship "Courtney" after model Courtney Krieger (aka Cover Girl).

This Shipwreck doesn't seem to have a sense of humor like the last one. I'm looking forward to Castle Destro. I want to see some more Baroness x Destro moments.

Why does this show get so overlooked yet everyone is so obsessed with my little pony?

Anyway this was a great episode, I miss the old Shipwreck but oh well.
Now Space Ghost regrets his action. "Why," he says, "do we always hurt the one we love? Why, Banjo? Why? Banjo! Banjo! Baaannjo!"

I have two responses to this:

    1) 'Cause My Little Pony is a better show, with better writing, animation, and character development. I like both shows but MLP is clearly a superior product. (imo)

    2) MLP is not something people expect to like, ever. So having a show that's actually good and is made for everyone to enjoy and not just little girls. Whereas G.I.Joe is something that people remember liking, and admitting to liking, so when a good show of it comes along people will go "yay this is a good show, much better than the movie". When people watch MLP they go "OMG WTF Why am I liking a show about Ponies?" which creates a much larger reaction because people will talk about how surprised they were at finding a MLP cartoon good rather than finding a G.I.Joe one good.

Anyway the episode was good and it's nice to see the Joes stepping up with the evidence gathering and going to see the General about it. I thought Scarlet's smashing the clearly hazardous material protection a bit silly, but I was glad they at least realised it was kept on ice for a reason and tried to keep it that way.

Its about time we see (what seems like) another Joe joining the team.

This episode felt like more of a bridge episode and it feels like it did what it was intended to do.

Lets see how the next episode pans out. It sounds like it should be pretty awesome.

Scarlett continues to be a terrible leader. Go into a top secret Cobra security lab and smashes a glass container holding a dangerous bio-viper agent. Immediately sets off the alarm.

And then she just tosses it unattended into the dingy cargo-bay of a tiny ship in a pile of ice cubes! Ice cubes melt! They didn't have like you know, a meat locker or freezer? It wasn't a large container, put it in a sealed ice chest or something! And they leave it alone. They should've been guarding that thing like it was the holy grail or ark of the convenant. That's valuable information that could earn their innocence and expose Cobra! Road Block can't stop pining over his freaking converted Cobra truck. Dude, it's a freaking truck! You are a fugitive on the run from the military, the government, and an evil secret malevolent conglomerate that has seemingly endless resources and worldwide connections. There are things more important than a truck like you know, getting your innocence and being exonerated so you can like you know go back to your worried sick family?!

Listen let me be clear, I like the show, but some of this writing is way too seriously contrived. The aim is keeping the Joes as fugitives, but I feel the creative team is working way too hard and are stretched extremely thin in doing this. If the Joes earn their innocence in the public, they are exonerated and main story is resolved and over with. That's the problem with the show right now. Week after week there is another new plot where they are a within an eyelash of getting proof and then they bungle it up themselves and the status quo is back to normal.

Now Scarlett, I love Scarlett. She's always been a favorite character of mine, but c'mon. She does not need to be blind squirrel looking for a nut dumb! Is this why Snake Eyes is always looking out for her? Because she has the intelligence of someone starting a bar fight with Anderson Silva?

They want to drag out the whole thing as much as possible (I understand 26 episodes have been made); something I've had a problem with since this show began. However, that's only part of it. What worries me more is whether or not they'll drag it out into another season. If they were to that, then we're going to have a problem. This story needs to be resolved by at least the final episode. Otherwise, how much longer would we have to wait?

As for Shipwreck, I don't think he'll join them, for the same reason the others couldn't: in the event the Joes get caught, they don't want to get in trouble for "aiding and abetting" them (as the law calls it); by doing that, you're just as guilty as the criminals themselves. The idea is that they've made friends and allies along the way who could speak for them about the good things they've done. OTOH, it means nothing if the Joes can't prove that Cobra are the bad guys. Remember, the Joes destroyed that lab because Cobra was developing a secret weapon. If they can't prove that, then their new friends won't be of much help in the long run. OTOOH (on the other, other hand), it's better than being completely on their own. After all, they'll need all the friends they can get.

I liked this. It's cool that Shipwreck is a guest character that's actually staying on for more than one episode at the least. Lots of ups and downs when it came to getting the creature off of the ship too.

Scarlett......she could be way more prudent than she is. Can't say I disagree about any of her shortcomings.
I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know? -Bill Watterson

Shipwreck naming his ship Courtney was inspired. I wonder if there were plans for the model to actually join the team down the road. Having the crew chase that Bio Viper all over the boat reminded me of the movie Alien. Probably because Shipwreck wore a ball cap like that mechanic in the movie.

In the GI JOE Devil's Due comics, Shipwreck and Cover Girl/Courtney actually became a couple and got engaged. The Devil's Due comics were also a continuation of the Marvel Comics/Hama series from the 80's and 90's, that is until IDW had Hama continue his original series himself.

This was an okay episode. It didn't really impress. I must say that I find Tunnel Rat more annoying than Scarlet, though.

I don't think Scarlett is annoying so much so that her leadership skills are terrible and she acts like a blind squirrel looking for a nut.

Niko on Transformers: Prime is an example of annoying :anime: .

I'm not sure if I'm feeling this version of Shipwreck. Part of the reason why I loved the old Shipwreck so much was that he was the goofy comic relief character. But this Shipwreck doesn't have any of that. Also, I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of Polly, though I loved that bird as much as Shipwreck did. He had some fun banter and interaction with Shipwreck, and I was kind of hoping that he would show. Then again, it took a while for Timber to appear, so maybe we'll get Polly somewhere down the road.

Roadblock and Tunnel Rat are basically fulfilling the comedy team/comic relief quotient. Most of the show has been about doing the "gritty, realistic" takes on the classic characters. So Doc was just like an average surgeon in an ER ward.

    Renegades so far

I'm a huge G.I. Joe fan, and when Renegades started a while back I've give it a try but I didn't like it too much so I gave up on it.

But then I decided to give a second chance and started to watch again from the beginning until last week's episode w/ Shipwreck.

Let me say to you: The show had grown on me. I'm not really a fan of this A-Team take on the Joes, but it is the most character development animation of G.I. Joe I've ever watch. And I like that.

My favorites so far were Return to Arashikage and Homecoming. In the latter was genuinely hoping that Flint would perceive Cobra as evil and join sides with the Joes. When a show makes you do that it means the story is good.

I'm also feeling a bit bored to this "Dungeon and Dragons" type of story when every episode shows the Joes almost clearing their names and then returning to the status quo. But I'm willing to wait until the Finale to see if something really happens.

Besides that we've seen so far a lot of character development and turning points, like what happened to Destro, Storm-Shadow, Jinx etc.

People complained about the animation, but I'm liking it very much. The fight scenes are well choreographed, the CGI blends well with the 2D animation, and the design of the characters are very good. The fight between Baroness and Snake Eyes on the top of the train was amazing.

About the guest stars I think they are trying too much to transform them into dark and gritty characters. Snow Job and Shipwrecked were a little off in those portrayals.

As someone here suggested I'm really hoping, by the beginning of 2nd season, that the Joes would become a covert type of unit, secret inside the government attacking Cobra more directly with the sanction of General Abernarthy. The name "Renegades" would still apply.

About Ripcord? Do you think he will show up in the last episode of this season?

The two guards at the beginning were pretty funny. Reminds me that all those mooks are humans under their masks.

Overall a good episode. Nice to see Roadblock relate to Shipwreck with their love of their respective vehicles. And I can understand Shipwreck not wanting to destroy his beloved ship for some strangers. Apparently the model he named his ship after is a G.I. Joe character, I wonder if she'll be showing up down the road?
