At the top of each page on Toon Zone, you have 5 pictures of people at computers. Who's the fat yellow guy with the red WB shirt on, and a rather goofy look on his face?

And who's the guy on the end screaming at his computer?

The guy in the red shirt is a nerd from the Please Please Pleese Get A Life Foundation, and the last one is Dexter Douglas from Freakazoid!

Actually, the PPPGALF nerd preceded Comic Book Guy's "Worst Episode Ever" schtick by about a year. CBG has been around since The Simpsons' second season, but he was always just a spoof of stereotypical comic shop owners (anyone who's ever been in a comic store knows the type)--he wasn't turned into a vehicle to mock the show's over-zealous viewers until the (in)famous "Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" episode.

The WB fanboy appeared in some later episodes and was given a name: Steven Pudner. His dialog in the PPPGALF episode was entirely made up of slightly re-written articles actual fans had written on alt.tv.animaniacs. Tom Ruegger and Peter Hastings combed through the "Cultural Reference Guide to Animaniacs" after getting permission from Will Bell, who had compiled it from alt.tv.animaniacs posts. Because they had to ask permission first, all the fans on the group knew that an episode was being produced which would make fun of them well ahead of time.

When 20 of us were invited to the WB Animation studio, after being shown a few other new cartoons that had been finished or nearly finished (All the Words in the English Language, Super Strong Warner Siblings), Peter pondered with some concern whether they should show us the Get-a-Life episode. We gave an enthusiastic yes, so he went to fetch the tape. When it was put in, somebody (can't remember now if it was Tom or Peter, or Paul Rugg) said nervously, "Remember, we deal in satire..." They were honestly worried that we would highly offended. They were so relieved when we loved it -- and rather amazed when one fan, Jay Maynard, pointed out an error in it as soon as it ended. They still knew that it wouldn't be received so well by the more casual fans -- i.e., those who weren't actually the target. They were right. When the episode aired, the newsgroup was filled with people shocked at how WBA was treating its own fans. But of course, the real fact was that it was a treat for those who were paraphrased in the show -- the real targets of the episode.

I really liked the similar guy who turned up in the Tiny Toons special 'Night Ghoulery'. ( Was it the same guy? )
"When's Fifi getting her own series?" he asked, a gleam in his eye.

"How did they find out about me?" I asked, before quickly adding: "Yeah, when is Fifi getting her own series anyway?"

As regards the "Please, Please, Please Get A Life" segment, I thought it was brilliant. The first time I watched it, it was on a tape that I had recorded earlier that day.
Of course, as soon as the merchandise filled room appeared I freeze framed and tried to identify everything in there. Then, at the end of the segment Yakko says "Now before you rewind the tape to see what was in the room at the beginning..."
I could only laugh.

The Fifi fanboy was a reference to a particular high-profile Fifi drooler fanboy from the rather naughty alt.tv.tiny-toon.fandom newsgroup -- slightly before my time. I'm not sure if it was an actual caricature of the guy, but from what I understand, it was pretty close.

Now the real question is whether the Lobe's hat in "Video Freak" really was a reference to mine, which had become the object of a big running gag on a.t.a at the time that second series of Freakazoid was being made... It certainly looks like mine.
