Newbies need limits on starting threads
Let newbies post free and wild
I don't care
I feel like I'm being a busybody for bringing this up, but...
I'm wondering if newbies shouldn't be allowed to start threads until their 11'th post.
There seem to be 3 types of problem posts.
1. "Hello Toon Zone!"
Introducing yourself actually seems to be downright polite, but there is little else to do then reply back "hi insert name here."
And if every one did it, it would be really annoying.
Perhaps if the Cafe Toon Zone 'coming and going and returning thread' had a more blatantly obvious name like "Introduce yourself, coming and going" it would catch most of these.
2. Zero content posts.
Sometimes other posters will make something out of these threads, or in the case of Jaroiros, people had a lot of fun. But for some reason when someone does this for their first post, they do like 5 or more and that's all they do.
3. Delicious Spam.
These are the one time posters.
Sometimes it's not so bad because they may be pointing out some work they did that could be of interest to people. The unfortunate thing is, if these are people involved with animation either professionally or as an amateur, they could make good forum members. But the hit and run approach is kind of rude.
I don't know if there are any alternatives, maybe a sticky thread somewhere so people could make this kind of announcement.
In my opinion, if you can't think of 10 things to say on other peoples threads, you probably aren't that interested in this site in the first place.
And of course the 'Is this thing on??' forum should probably be left open to newbies.
I think the trend is to move away from rules. Getting rid of the 10 post before you get an avatar rule is good in my opinion.
And I have to admit to a perverse curiosity to read almost every single newbie post of these types.
Sorry if I'm going all Lisa Simpson on ya'll.
Maybe a poll will give a clue if this is a problem for anyone.

I believe "needless bumping" should be added to that list.
Leave the newbies alone, so what if their topics are stupid, I have seen mods make dumb topics before.
Yeah, I suppose it's more the quantity, and not necessarily the quality of some posts that should be examined...Originally Posted by Kenshin900

Are you suggesting if someone who has newbie status they shouldn't be allowed to re-open old threads? How old?Originally Posted by lord dalek

I'd think K.A.N opening that Star Wars thread was about the worst I know of. But I'm kind of sorry he didn't stick around. I'd like to have seen if he could rebuke my Ewok theory.

Wait, no, I'm pretty new here my self, forget that.
I think everyone is bound to post some stupid things eventually, I know I have.
Where I see the problem is the occasional person who signs up because they are only interested in starting threads for no good reason or to spam.
I included the bit about announcement threads because I think there already is a place to do that.
But like I said, I'm new here. So I'm not in a position to say how bad it is.

Your ideas intrigue me, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
We may as well let newbies start threads. Heck, one of the big reasons guests take the leap and sign up is to get questions answered. If they couldn't start a new thread to ask their questions, they'd be forced to turn an existing thread off-topic or post replies like "Yup" and "OK" until they got their ten posts in.
What corny dialogue!![]()
Yup.
Woah. CNX flashback.
Idea didn't work when OVK suggested it then, didn't work when OVK suggested it on AI. It's nice to think that someone will magically become a genius at the internet after replying to a few things first, but then stuff like this sort of contradicts that.

Excellent point. There is the potential to go off topic and it could increase reluctance to go from lurker to poster. Just to make the counter point, how often is the first post so important it can't wait a few days? I'm guessing most of the trouble makers haven't lurked much and have not yet picked up on the forum etiquette.Originally Posted by Davesnothere

I think they gave some consideration before allowing Dr. Phill to post. He doesn't even get his own account.

I think I found a number 4 reason for not rushing to start threads.
4. Multi-post! Muti-post! Mullll-tiiiii-pooooost!
Posting the same message to multiple forums. It's a common practice for usenet, but after a few days of familiarity it should become obvious that it's same people posting to all the groups here at Toon Zone.

Newbies doing threads I'm not sure about that. I mean they introduce themselves. I didn't introduce myself when I was a Newbie

Actually, that is a good point. I think several times when I was a Newbie, I posted new threads without seeing if something similar was created (I did lurk for awhile before I joined, I guess I still didn't lurk enough...Originally Posted by Aquadementia

Now, kind of, sort of, on a related note, one of my pet peeves (and something I still don't understand) is why some people here (Moderators included) throw absolute tantrums over "thread ressurection". Someone needs to sit these people down, and tell them that old does not necessarily equal bad...Sure, if it's irrelevent to the present day, that's a different matter entirely, but if it's still relevent, why worry about exactly how old it is?

I fall under the newb category of "Total and Complete Idiot."
I never knew there was a "Ten posts before you can get an avatar" rule. I think that's kind of pointless, because most people hit 10 posts on their first day(s). Why not just let people get avatars from the beginning?

The avatar thing is old news. I doubt it will come back as long as new people don't start doing vary rude things is my guess. Don't worry about it.
And actually 10 post your first day is pretty active from what I've seen, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I think that part of TZ's strong community is that the mods frown on "Newbies" being treatied like Newbies. Or at least they used to. Which was why there was some talk about removing the post count and/or the Join Date a while ago. I'm sure most people woud like everyone to be on roughly the same level, and things like the number of posts and join dates can be construed as a seniority thing.
When I joined I'm pretty sure I joined just to post some batman beyond "revelation," but I don't think it was a stupid or pointless thread. As a matter of fact, I know I didn't do any lurking prior to joining, and I think I caught on pretty quickly to forum ettique.
Besides, if "Newbies" were treated with such restraints the next complaints would be that TZ is too strict.![]()
Anyways, if they really bother you, you can just put them on your Ignore List.
Then again about Newbs well I'm kinda shifting towards wait after 10 posts. Because no offence but some of them do the same topic thats already still active. Like I did Top Ten Video Games, Some other Newb did top five video games.

It's like this. They create a spam thread. "Bad Newbie. Thred Closed." Then they disapear for about a month because of their shame and when they get back they're too nervous to post anything spam worthy. That's it.
