    "Yoda spoke of another."

    Like This Thread!
Perhaps this has been discussed elsewhere, but I've never heard any speculation of it.

So of course, in Empire Strikes Back, Obi-Wan laments as Luke recklessly abandons his training that Luke was their last hope, and Yoda says, "No, there is another." And of course, that other was revealed to be his sister Leia in the second movie.

YEAH, RIGHT. I don't believe for a second that Lucas had these storylines as well planned-out as he makes everyone believe, and this is the single biggest piece of evidence, as far as I'm concerned. Lucas wouldn't have had Leia give Luke that kiss earlier in the movie if he'd already decided that Leia was going to be his sister who was also strong in the force.

So the question that I'm wondering, and perhaps someone has heard of the truth leaking out elsewhere, is WHO WAS THE OTHER HOPE?

Not having a clue outside of introducing a new character, here are a couple of thoughts I had:

    a) It actually always was Leia for whatever reason, and the sister part came later.

    b) Lucas didn't actually have a clue, may not have even intended on following up; he just wanted to swerve us into thinking that Luke might die or join Vader.

    c) Luke had knocked up some girl back on Hoth. Okay, that one's reaching a little.

Curious to hear what others think/have heard.

I must admit the third one is intriguing, Ein

I'm having to assume he had that plot twist pop up somewhere in the development of the script for ESB and carried over to ROTJ, which to make it short, he planned it for those two movies.

That is, unless he hadnt already had the idea in his head before ANH and was looking for the right time to use it. Who know what goes through old Georges mind at times

I'm...pretty sure he did have it all planned out. I remember reading that he had all the stories initially written at once--the stories, mind you, not the scripts. He probably had it all done at once...

*shrugs* Just what I think anyway...

    Howdy,

Film Threat ran an interview with Gary Kurtz, the producer of the first two movies, back when Phantom Menace was released. He's definitely the unsung hero of the saga, and the precipitous drop in quality between the 2nd and 3rd movies is, I think, due to his absence.

Anyway, I quote (regarding Return of the Jedi):

...the ending was the coronation of Leia as the queen of what was left of her people, to take over the royal symbol. That meant she was then isolated from all of the rest and Luke went off then by himself. It was basically a kind of bittersweet ending. She's not his sister that dropped in to wrap up everything neatly. His sister was someone else way over on the other side of the galaxy and she wasn't going to show up until the next episode.
So, your alternative A is probably the closest, but flip the order you have them in (Kurtz, at least, thought it always was Luke's sister, but the Leia part came later).

Rest of the interview is a worthwhile read, too, covering a lot of things that would have made RotJ a much better film.

I don't find anything wrong with that. Luke and Leia had no idea they are related to each other. If they had known sooner, she wouldn't have kiss him that way, plain and simple.

It's not like this hasn't been done in other screenplays. Remember Odepius Rex? He didn't know she was his mom until after he married (and possibly slept with) her.

Except that in RotJ when Luke reveals to Leia that she's his sister, she says, "I know... somehow, I've always known." Of course, we're led to believe that she "knows" because of the Force, but...

...either she's totally talking out her ass there, or else she knowingly planted a great big very much non-platonic kiss on her brother's lips back on Hoth just to make Indiana Jones jealous.

Also, some time has elapsed between the 'kiss' and the 'Leia is my sister' talk.

For more "tension" between the two, check out Alan Dean Foster's book "Splinter of the Mind's Eye." It was the first Star Wars book officially licensed by Lucasfilm and came out before Empire. Foster was not told of their true relation, so he further explores their feelings, though treading lightly, of course. It also contains foreshadowing to a particular scene in Jedi. The main plot is somewhat farfetched, but overall, it's a very fun read!
