Weekend Box Office: Freddy vs Jason #1 TWO WEEKS IN A ROW!

    Like This Thread!
Well, somewhere down the line, a movie finally had to be number one at least two weeks in a row this summer. For the first time since X2 opened in May, Freddy vs. Jason is number one for the second weekend in a row! Now blame that on weak competition if you want, but three other new movies did open this weekend. FvJ brought in $13.4 million this weekend for a total of $61.4 million. You know New Line is happy with this, and an announcement I'm sure about a sequel isn't too far away. According to Box Office Mojo FvJ had a budget of around $25 to $30 million.

Coming in at number two again was S.W.A.T. which brought in $10.8 million and has accumulated a nice total of $88 million.

Open Range stayed at number three with a weekend take of $9.4 and a $29.2 million total.

Freaky Friday stays at number four with $9.4 million and a pretty good $74.5 million total.

Jackie Chan's new movie The Medallion opened in fifth place with $8.2 million. Thought it would have made a little more.

Another new movie this weekend was My Boss's Daughter which opened in TENTH(!) place with $5 million. I don't know if the movie going audience is a little sick and tired of seeing Ashton Kutcher all the time, or if they thought this movie looked really bad. I don't know, maybe all this public exposure with Demi Moore is hurting him? We'll just have to see when his next movie comes out.

And the other new movie that opened was Marci X which made $865,000 on 1,200 screens coming in 17th place.

Next weekend marks the end of the summer movie season officially with it being Labor Day weekend, and only one new movie is opening, and that's Jeepers Creepers 2. This movie has been done for a long time and MGM originally had this scheduled to come out February 14th, but didn't want to go up against DareDevil. Then they moved it to April. They bumped it again to August, and this time though setting the release date on the same weekend that the first film opened on back in 2001. It too was at the end of the summer and had no competition. The low budget film did surprisingly well for MGM. It was a hit with some movie critics and horror fans so naturally a sequel was granted.

We'll see if one new horror movie can bump another horror movie from the number one spot next weekend. Should be interesting.

    Here are your numbers...

    1) Freddy vs. Jason- $13,450,000 ($61,495,000)
    2) S.W.A.T.- $10,800,000 ($88,056,000)
    3) Open Range- $9,400,000 ($29,200,000)
    4) Freaky Friday- $9,400,000 ($74,500,000)
    5) The Medallion- $8,200,000 ($8,200,000) NEW!!!
    6) Pirates of the Caribbean- $7,300,000 ($261,000,000)
    7) Seabiscuit- $6,335,000 ($93,101,000)
    8) Uptown Girls- $5,600,000 ($22,311,000)
    9) American Wedding- $5,575,000 ($90,627,000)
    10) My Boss's Daughter- $5,000,000 ($5,000,000) NEW!!!
    11) Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over $3,000,000 ($102,485,190)
    12) Bad Boys II- $2,100,000 ($132,393,000)

I guess there will be no further updates on Gigli.

There was another new release this weekend, "Marci X". I wonder if that'll do worse than Gigli.

There is really nothing else to say about Gigli. And I edited my post and put Marci X. I realized I missed it just as I posted it. I thought there was another movie opening this weekend so I went and scrolled down the list. There it was way down there.

I'm not surprised that Marica X flopped.

The Medallion looks like it would do bad.

But I thought that FvJ had some (actual) competition with My Boss's Daughter. Guess not.

    Go FvJ!

    Meh

Nothing that interesting. A little suprised that FvJ stayed at #1, but then again, looking at the releases, it's not like it had all that much competition.

Jeepers Creepers 2...I hated the first movie, myself. And I don't see how it set up for a sequel. But I'll predict it at #1, nonetheless.

i thought perhaps one of new movies would knock FVJ out of the number one spot, i've very glad i was wrong. i'd like to see it at #1 for another week, but i think Jeepers Creepers 2 will end its reign.

although freddy vs. jason was number one, it was down 63% from last weekend.. and it was the second lowest number one movie for a weekend since Darkness Falls for 2003..

Jeepers Creepers 2 will definitely be number one next weekend.

the three new releases looked like crap and it seems that America agreed.

and one just has to laugh at how badly Marci X did.. jesus, who would that movie appeal to? it didn't even make a million dollars. another great miss for one of the FRIENDS castmembers... at least Matt Leblanc has a spinoff, what do the others have? other than jennifer anniston, i don't see any of the others really having good careers..

i'm still wondering why it dropped 63%. i thought good word of mouth would have brought in more people. if it was horrible, i could see a drop that huge.

It was a slow weekend all around for the movies. Since a lot of kids are heading back to school, maybe they just wanted one last weekend of freedom with their families doing stuff outdoors.
