Sequels seem to do almost as well as their predecessor, even though their only half as good. Now I'm already seeing billboards for Shrek 2 and I'd like to know if its any bit as good as the original.
This summer was filled with Sequels. Do you think the sequels helped the box office or made it worse??
I mean with great movies like:
1)X2
2)Matrix Reloaded
3)Terminator 3
4)American Wedding
And utter failures like:
1)Charlie's Angels 2 (Yuck)
2)Dumb and Dumberer(Prequel , whatever still was garbage)
3)Tomb Raider 2 (How many plot holes does it take to make a bad movie?).
Does this show Sequels are better or worse for the box office?

Money-wise it was average. But quality-wise it was absolute crap. The only movie that was better than its predecessor was X2, and that was by a hair. All of the other sequels had no point and no purpose. Matrix 2 should have been held off until November. And every sequel in July was worthless.
Later.
No one will dispute the fact that the only sequel this year that was far superior than the original would be X2. I can't wait for the third film. And if they do this franchise like franchises should be done, they will either pick a one time director to do 1 movie after part three with a stand alone story and then look for a director who wants to tell another trilogy. I my opinion this is how franchises should be done, much like comic books. We still have yet to see the Sentinels, the Morlocks, the Hellfire Club, and the Savage Land all good stories that could be done in individual stories.

I always pictured the divine Miss Locklear. I can't seem to picture anyone else, and why not. As for Sebastian, early on when approached about Wolverine, someone dropped the name Sebastian Shaw to Mel Gibson. That would be interesting. Now throw in Tim Roth and we're set.

I liked X2 and Charlie's Angels 2.![]()
X2 was cool. T3 absolutely rocked. The others I haven't seen. Bad Boys II is the only one I considered seeing but didn't. I really don't care about the others. In fact, I hope alot of them flop.
I loved every sequel that I saw this year. Matrix Reloaded, X2 and T3. I want to see Bad Boyz 2 but I havent gotten around to it I might wait til it hits DVD. Tomb Raider 2 will get watched when it hits cable maybe.

i will galdly DISPUTE that man....Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was batter than the original...it was much more action packed and the supporting cast was alot better...even the soundtrack was better.Originally Posted by GL2k2

P>S> cradle of life was also better than the original tomb raider, but only by a hair...angels 2 was the real standout sequel this summer...hell, it was the real standout movie if u ask me

I won't get in an argument with you, but I still haven't seen the first one and I did see the ending to "Full Throttle" and I have one word for you, SILLY. Besides, no way a car can flip that many times and not blow up. It was just sillly, and not appealling to me in anyway. It's Powerpuff girls for grown-ups. I don't like movies based on television properties anyway because they don't stay true to the originals anymore. Nowadays everybody wants to update stuff and make something that was once cool and serious a comedy. But I do understand on television you don't have to watch it, in theaters, you have to make people watch it.Originally Posted by Bobby Boy 101
X2 at least brought more to the characters and straight up delivered for comic fans and movie fans both. If I had a choice of what to see I'd pick X2. Charlie's Angels 2 just isn't my bag.

I loved Bad Boys 2 it was funnier and more action packed then the orginal especially the last 10 minutes of the film.
One way to look at this might be to see where the summer sequels fell in the top movies of the year so far, as well as looking at their earnings compared to costs over at http://boxofficemojo.com:
2. Matrix Reloaded
4. X2
6. T3
10. 2 Fast 2 Furious
11. Bad Boys 2 (currently #5)
16. Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle
17. Legally Blonde 2
19. Spy Kids 3D (currently #2)
33. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (currently #6)
36. Rugrats Go Wild
44. American Wedding (currently #1)
51. Dumb and Dumberer
Legally Blonde 2 and Spy Kids 2 have already made back their relatively moderate production/marketing costs, and American Wedding is sure to do so as well. Bad Boys 2 will probably fall $20-$30 million short of its $170 million budget, but it's guaranteed some big DVD sales to make up for it. And believe it or not, Rugrats made back $38 of its estimated $40 million in production/marketing costs, which I would call a success as well, even if it fell short of expectations.
So your only real flops out of this batch are Tomb Raider, Dumb and Dumberer, and Charlie's Angels. Their companies at this point are out $87 million, $13 million, and $65 million respectively.
So to answer your question, that's a 75% success rate for sequels. Compare that to the success rate of a new story/franchise, and I imagine those are pretty good odds.
"He lived hard and died stupid."
Ok So it is obvious i was right. The sequels that were failures did pretty bad in the box office compared to the other movies. Thats why they are failures not because they sucked. Even though they pretty much did.
when considering whether a movie was a failure or not you have to look at other stuff, not just money. we all know there are hundreds of movies out there that makes tens of millions that blow giant chunks *cough*matrix*cough*. i look at 4 things to consider movies failures, those being money, ranking, number of theaters playing it, and story/entertainment value.
for example, last week tomb raider 2 opened to a dismal 4th place, making only $22 million in over 3200 theaters. seabiscuit, however, i consider a success, even tho it opened 5th after tomb raider, because 1) it made only $900,000 less, even tho it opened in almost HALF as many theaters as tomb raider, and 2) it just plain had a better story. furthermore, while tomb raider fell to 6th place this weekend, seabiscuit climbed to 4th. it's rare for a movie to CLIMB in the rankings.

Enrique's Blog | Enrique's Movie Reviews
As most have said, the only movie better then the original this summer was X2. There are so many directions that movie can go, it's amazing. Here's hoping we see the Sentinels in the next movie.Matrix Reloaded was decent, but not quite as good as the first. I do plan on seeing Bad Boys 2, but I'm just gonna wait until it's on DVD. T3 was also another good movie which surprised me with the ending it got. The rest of the sequels are just utter garbage. With the worse of it being Tomb Raider and Charlie's Angels.

I've had a good time with the sequals this summer.
X2 better than the first (waiting to hear if there's going a be pakcaged set of it and the first before I get it on DVD)
Charlie's Angels:Full Throttle I really enjoyed and I'm planning on getting it on DVD, but I like the first one better.
T3, not better than T2, but I'd say it's just as good as the first one (probably going to wait for a trilogy box set to get it on DVD)
Tomb Raider:The Craddle of Life, like CA 2 I enjoyed it and wil probably get on DVD, but I still like the first one better.
I'm waiting to see Bad Boys 2,Spy Kids 3D and American Wedding until they get to DVD, but I do plan on seeing Freddy Vs. Jason and Jeepers Creepers 2 in Auguest.
Who knows what is really real..... that's the true question in life.
Actually, the situation for 2003 sequels isn't quite that rosy. Here's how they've done so far:Originally Posted by EinBebop

Tomb Raider
Rugrats Go Wild
American Wedding (only just released though)
Dumb and Dumberer
Obviously when these films are released on video some of them stand to add a lot to their bottom line. Still, as of now only 25% of this crop of sequels have turned a profit.
