Hy Sting Chameleon, I have a question?

    Like This Thread!
Remember my is Sci-fi one of the most cliched genres thread back on the old boards? You mentioned a book (or series) by a guy named Alan Dean Foster, about humans and an insectoid race forming a colony? Can you tell me what the story was called? Thanks in advance.

He has several different series and unrelated one-shot novels taking place in the same universe, which he calls the "humanx commonwealth"...this site lists them all with short descriptions:

I havent read very many, but I dont get to read many books in general,im currently reading my first ever Discworld novel...I`m only on the first few pages but I already know I`ll be reading plenty more!

Midworld and mid-flinx are the two Foster books I can read and reread, but that may be because practically every page has another new wild alien creature or plant

    "Interesting Times"

Glad to hear you're enjoying it-- and it's not even one of the better ones!

Pratchett is huge in Britain; it's a pity he's not well-known over here.

BTW, are you familiar with Good Omens, which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman? (A connection that keeps this part of the thread at least somewhat connected with comic books.)

Due to our lack of comic and book stores (we have one small,SMALL comic store and one barnes and nobles) I get exposed to very, very few series.

I could count all the authors Ive read on one hand, and I own only 4 comic books (one maxx, one star wars comic, one "giantkiller" and a comic with 4 different short monster related stories in it)

Same situation with me. Thank God for the Internet!

You should definitely seek out Good Omens (which, I may not have made clear, is a novel). But it came out about 11 years ago, so you'll probably have to do a search on a used book site like abebooks.com. Anyway, standard description of it: "Monty Python's The Omen" Terry Gilliam (of Brazil and 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, etc.) is working on a film version.

well at least you have something. new jersey has no comic book stores!! i'm telling you, its a government conspiracy!!! the closest barnes and noble is about 20 minutes away driving on the highway, and they barely have any comics. they're comics are really outdated.

I live in Kansas City, MO

I live in a Metro area and comic stores here are as hard to find as honest lawyers. There are a couple shops on the Kansas side, but like Inque's B&N, it is AT LEAST a 20 minute drive away, if not more. It really is a lousy situation.

Mile High in Colorado is probably the best comic book shop around, and I really wish they would branch out into other states. The old style comic book shop modle from the late 70's and early 80's just doesn't work any more. Even when there was a comic book store open near to where I live, it was like every other cliched comic book store you ever heard of. It was VERY unwelcoming to new customers and seemed to cater to their buddies and Dungeons and Dragons pals. It was like a closed society, and if you ask me, that's what kills alot of comic book stores. Mile High really has their finger on something good if they could only franchise what they got outside of Colorado. Then that would be great and give people a good place to go and buy books and comics.
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

I have to remember that name Alan Dean Foster. The Human & Thranx relationship is interesting (I was kinda experimenting with a similar idea in one of my storys.)

BTW: Sorry about your comic book situation.

Where I am the closest B&N and decent comic book store are 50 minutes away. So we have to get up at 10 o'clock at night an hour before we go to bed to get down there, and when we get back our parents slice us to pieces with a breadknife and jump up and down on our grades singing glory hallelujah.

But you tell that to young people today and they won't believe you.
