This is why cable TV is a good investment, it's the only place where you can see a half decent show, with actors and a plotline. It seems that every night a network has a reality show. It's sick.

God, somebody just shoot me now and get it overwith.

    >hears a gun load behind her<

...Well, since you're taking requests, how 'bout dropping a million bucks in front of me?!

Anyway, to get to what I was gonna say... Shoot me. I'd say "just shoot me", but that would be too pathetic an unintentional pun to make. This sucks. I'm just hooking up Cartoon Network, and that's it.

Considering how easy they are and cheap to make - and the money that can be gathered, I don't think peple are going to tire as quickly as we are... they are very popular in the UK still.

Pretty much why they're churned out in large numbers these days... the prize money, paying for the production, and getting a half-dozen carefully-screened nobodies to make the likes of "Survivor" or whatever probably pales in comparison to what NBC's shelling out for one episode of "Friends" (including the actors' salaries)...

Let's face it. Broadcast TV is dead. If they haden't fell for all those faule promises, and exagerated claims maid by the FCC, we'd still have decent programs outside of cable TV.

Cable TV is dead too. Not to mention movies, theater, books, and music. And social interactions are really starting to play themselves out.

    *warning*

The following post is a minor flame and, hopefully, DOES reflect the opinions of occupants of Toonzone*

ugh... With the exception of the Osbournes (and even that is getting tired), I HATE... I repeat... HATE reality based TV shows! It is so mindless that everytime I am forced to watch them the first thing I want to do is bang my head against something hard. I personally wish those responsible could be flogged in public.

    But, hey, theres always CN

ya, i heard about that dog one a few days ago. i almost cried.

see, this is what i think... part of it is because these shows are cheap to make, but a BIG part of it is because PEOPLE KEEP WATCHING these shows!!! these shows are big ratings hogs. you ever see how the season premiere of survivor compares against a show like, say, NYPD Blue or The Practice? You also ever notice why they never premiere any of these 3 shows at the same time?
a bit off topic, but it can be applied to this as well... a friend of mine, a father of 2, was talking with me about how there's all these violent cartoons on TV (ironically, we were having this discussion while his kids were watching dragonball). he went on and on about how there shouldn't be all this violence on TV, how the stations are responsible, ad naseum.
when he finally shut up *evil grin*, i simply replied, "you've gone on and on about this, and your kids are watching dragonball right in front of us, yet i don't see you changing the channel."
ACTION is watch those fat cats understand. how many GREAT shows have gone off air because of low ratings?? because few people watch them. if people would just CHANGE THE FREAKIN' channel to something with SUBSTANCE, reality shows would disappear, i guarantee you.
"Pretty pathetic" - direct quote from ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner describing the quality of Pixar's movies.

I don't really consider "Survivor" a reality show. It's not like "Real World," where the main attraction is watching people do things. "Survivor" is primarily a game show. A bunch of people competing for a prize. The only difference is, it takes 936 hours to play. I don't watch it because I'm interested in what some losers are doing on an island. I watch it because I love the strategic aspect. How the game changes the players, how they use their time, and the constant twists thrust upon them. Sure, you have shows like "Fear Factor" which overlap into silly reality TV, but everyone groups all these shows together, and "Survivor" really is exceptional.

I can't wait to see the hillbilly reality show they're supposed to be making... They were in some of our neighboring counties looking for people to put on it...As if we didn't look bad enough already here in West Virginia!

I rarely watch network TV any way, but I still think this is a turn towards the worse. Reality shows will be around for a long time, as their ratings are high.

That's why shows like Springer dominate daytime tv, people just can't get enuff of trash tv. Reality shows dominate evening trash tv dominates daytime.. how far can US television sink before the masses finally get sick of it?

The only broadcast shows I watch are Simpsons (once and a blue moon now) and Birds of prey but that's almost done. I can't stand the mindless dreck that's on.

I guess the American masses like seeing other people's misery, problems, heartaches and how big a fool they are so the viewer feels superior. Says a lot about the US.

I don't claim to know the appeal behind reality TV, but I'd like to think people are at least a little better than that. I think part of it is the chance to see real people in real situations rather than something that is written, but many of these shows go overboard.

Reality TV is a fad, nothing more and like anything other fad, it will pass.
