So spider-man is still the fastest to 100 million.
Well, as expected Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the Clones did open in the number 1 spot and dethroning the two week reigning box office smashing Spider-Man, however it technically did not beat Spider-Man's weekend opening. Episode 2 had a Friday through Sunday opening of $86.1 million. Combine that with Thursday's opening, and it gives AOTC $116 million! Pretty impressive for the second chapter in Lucas' new trilogy. Keep in mind though that AOTC openend in about 1,000 screens less than Spider-Man. Reviews have been all over the chart for this thing, from good to bad to mixed. Same goes with the fan reaction, but one thing is certain, this film is gonna make a lot of money.
Spider-Man was bumped to number 2 with $46 million in it's third week. Again, still very good for a film in it's 3rd week. Spider-Man is still on track to become the fastest movie to hit $300 million and that should happen by this coming Memorial Day weekend.
Unfaithful dropped to number 3 with $10.3 million. About A Boy opened up in fourth with $8.4 million.
Side note here. Ice Age dropped to 11th with $1 million and will finally be gone next week.
Opening next weekend (which again is Memorial Day weekend) to challenge The Force will be Jennifer Lopez in Enough. Al Pacino tracks down serial killer Robin Williams in Insomnia. And Dreamworks next animated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Big weekend coming up. Maybe there will be some changes in the top 5.
Now even though AOTC reached $116 million this weekend, Spider-Man is still the fastest to reach $100 million cause AOTC needed an extra day to do it. Once again, keep in mind a 1,000 screens less than Spider-Man. Just imagine what would have happened if it opened on the same amount of screens. With the difference being only a day to reach $100 million, the race is on for $200 and $300 million. Can AOTC beat Spider-Man's $200 million record? Here are you're numbers....

$116 million in 3 days? Wow.
4 days actually. It needed a fourth day to reach $100 million.
