Shared Time Period Strategy Around NBC's Broadcast of 2010 Winter Olympics Along with Jay Leno at 10 p.m. Enables Network to Broadcast Original Programming Year-Round

Network Renews Returning Series "Law & Order" and "Chuck"

NEW YORK - May 19, 2009 – NBC announced today its 2009-2010 schedule featuring more original programming than ever before and a shared time-period strategy around NBC's Olympics platform that, along with "The Jay Leno Show" (Mondays-Fridays 10-11 p.m. ET), allows the network to broadcast all-new content year-round.

In addition, NBC issued renewals to "Law & Order" and "Chuck" (see accompanying release) as part of its strong slate of new and returning shows announced recently at the network's highly successful Infront.

"NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with "The Jay Leno Show" at 10 p.m.," said Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "We're incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, 'Community' and 'Parenthood.' We can't wait for the fall."

"We are extremely proud to introduce these strong new series to NBC's schedule next season in strategic timeslots that position them for success," said Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios. "They join some of the highest quality returning shows on television, which will serve as a strong foundation to the new schedule. I think viewers are going to be happy to see this lineup of great new shows that will truly fit the NBC legacy of quality, culturally defining shows."

NBC's shared time period strategy will kick off this fall on Mondays with the premiere of "Heroes" (8-9 p.m. ET) continuing with all originals before "Chuck" assumes the time period after the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which will be a powerful launching platform with its broad, female appeal and strong ratings as the most-watched event of the year. Using "NBC Sunday Night Football's" potent promotional platform, the new high-octane drama "Trauma" will debut Mondays (9-10 p.m. ET) with the epic event series "Day One" taking over the time period following the Olympics.

NBC's successful "The Biggest Loser" series continues Tuesdays (8-10 p.m.) and will help launch the new Wednesday lineup this fall, with the new family drama "Parenthood" debuting (8-9 p.m. ET) and the new hospital drama "Mercy" assuming the time period post-Olympics. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" will air 9-10 p.m. ET following "Parenthood."

NBC's Thursday marquee comedy night will begin with the only live comedy between 8-10 p.m. on any network, "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday" (8-8:30 p.m. ET), followed by "Parks and Recreation" (8:30-9 p.m. ET), "The Office" (9-9:30 p.m. ET) and the new comedy "Community" (9:30-10 p.m. ET). After "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday" completes its multi-week run, "Community" will move to 8 p.m. and "30 Rock" will debut at 9:30 p.m., enabling NBC to feature more original comedy than ever before.

On Fridays in the fall, the enduring drama "Law & Order" will return for its record 20th season (tying "Gunsmoke" as the longest running drama series in primetime) and will lead off at 8-9 p.m. (ET) while "Southland" follows at 9-10 p.m. (ET), building a great crime block.

Saturdays will be a showcase for "Dateline NBC" (8-9 p.m. ET) and encore episodes of "Trauma" (9-10 p.m. ET) and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (10-11 p.m. ET).

"Football Night in America" (7-8:20 p.m. ET) and " NBC Sunday Night Football" (8:20-11 p.m. ET) – the number one show of the fall -- will return on Sundays in the fall with a fan-pleasing schedule of games to round out the fall season.

Utilizing the compatible demographics provided by the Olympics, NBC will launch the premieres of "The Marriage Ref" from executive producers Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Rakieten ("Oprah") on Sundays (8-9 p.m. ET) and the third season premiere of "The Celebrity Apprentice" on Sundays with two-hour editions (9-11 p.m. ET). In addition, the new comedy "100 Questions" will debut on Tuesdays (9:30-10 p.m. ET) following a 90-minute edition of "The Biggest Loser" (8-9:30 p.m. ET).

And coming in the summer 2010, NBC will telecast all original episodes of "The Jay Leno Show," "Friday Night Lights," "America's Got Talent," "Breakthrough with Tony Robbins," "Dateline NBC," with additional programs to be announced later.

All I can say is yawn. I knew Heroes was getting cut back, but only half a season? I thought the cutback was by about 4 or 5 episodes. Moving it up half an hour will either hurt or help it.

I'm surprised Deal is off the schedule considering that it continues to maintain the ratings its had consistently over the past two years, but maybe it will be mostly summer filler now. I guess that's what happens when you throw on Jay Leno every night though. Also as a surprise to me is that Law and Order: Criminal Intent isn't on the schedule. From what I understood, they were supposed to continue doing reruns after the USA premieres for it during the rerun part of winter and then during summer. And where is Friday Night Lights, which was renewed for three more seasons? Is it all of the sudden a summer exclusive when it has never aired in the summer?

NBC claims they want to close the gap between them and the other big three networks, but this schedule seems like it will allow the CW to close the gap on them.

I'm actually pretty shocked that Earl is gone. I figured it would get another season despite the ratings drop. Good thing it ended on a cliffhanger then.

I say the 8:00 time slot may be helpful at least for me, since 9:00 Mondays is already busy thanks to Raw and 24.

Day One sounded like a direct competitor for 24 in both timeslot and theme, but after reading up on it, it's not so thematically similar to 24 after all. It's got me interested. If it's a limited series (crosses fingers) it ought to be a solid commitment. Shades of Jericho are seeding my doubts, however.

As expected, having Jay Leno's show on every day's schedule just makes it look like the network has far fewer shows on the air than its competitors, and therefore more like a bargain-basement network. Congrats, NBC execs!

edit: I also miss them showing movies on Saturdays; I actually watched those sometimes before SNL, and I'm not usually one for watching movies airing on TV.

Eh, it makes it look like FOX, CW, and MyNetwork, but instead of giving that hour back to local news, they have Leno instead.

The reason I say help or hurt is because it is true that the CBS comedies aren't as popular at 8 PM, but it means Heroes will be up against the entire Dancing With the Stars (compared to only half an hour) and House, both of which have been getting higher ratings than it.

I may not had watched the show much but it's a pain when the fans arre left hanging by a thread when it comes to shows getting panned because of lackluster ratings. Here's hoping that someone from the show can fill in as to what's going to happen with the show. As much TBS had been showing it, well at least advertising it, I would think that it'll be the new home for a new My Name is Earl season.

I'd rather watch my local news than Leno, frankly. I said this in another thread, but why couldn't they just have given him a weekly show? That's about as much of the guy as I could take, so the current schedule offers five times as much as I could take.

NBC has ruined my Monday nights. I don't have TiVo or anything similar to that, and I don't have multiple televisions. So, instead of taping Big Bang Theory and watching House and watching Heroes, I'm going to have chose to tape House, Heroes, or BBT and watch one of those shows, and hope to God one of them will repeat through the season more than once. Guess I'm taping Heroes this season and figure out what the hell I'm watching at 9 PM (and no, Two and a Half Men is not an option).
What does the X stand for? It's definitely not Extreme. Extreme starts with E.

Initially, I didn't like seeing what they did to Chuck, but then I remembered the rumor was he was being shoved to Fridays. This is actually better. (And I don't believe for a second that lying exec who told IGN it was possible for NBC to order the back 9 to season three and run it during the summer. YEAH RIGHT.)

Eww, my Thursday is ruined! Put something good on at 8 so I don't have to settle for that awful Smallville again!

For once, I can laugh at a show getting the Friday slot. Ha ha, Southland! Serves you right for being more popular than The Unusuals despite being unoriginal!

Just wait until the DVD box sets come out. All of the shows are much better saved for those discs than the old-fashioned VHS and they're probably cheaper than having to buy a TiVo system.

I'm surprised that some people are still watching Heroes even after all of the hate it received during its past two seasons (Volumes 2 and 3/4).

And it doesn't matter what show's doing lackluster. To me, both shows would be removed from TV just becasuse of lack of popularity along with the ratings. I can't see what makes one of those shows better than the other. Care to elaborate?

I remember when they'd show made-for-TV movies on weeknights. I wonder what happened with those.

They got old, stale, and weren't doing anything for the network. We have to think of the times people. NBC wants ratings. It's not going to rely on old ways of TV if they're not helping to make it a better channel. If we want those kinds of films, there's always the local video stores where we have soooo many direct-to-DVD films, it's not funny.

Fair enough. I was just remembering those times, and how around 1997, NBC's made-for-TV movies were mostly teen movies that featured teenagers with problems. One that comes to mind is "Killing Mr. Griffin" which starred Amy Jo Johnson and Mario Lopez. Some of those movies were fun to me, but hey, I've managed to live on without them.

Having anything with Amy Jo Johnson is enough to even make the most hardcore PR fan fall to his knees. The thing is some made-for-TV films are better left for CBS since they've been getting a reputation with those Hallmark films they carry every year. So if NBC started to have made-for-TV films all the time, they would just be copying off someone else's formula to gaining big ratings and sometimes copying off someone else's methods don't work out in your favor.

My mentioning of Amy Jo Johnson has nothing to do with how a big a PR fan I am. Hell, I even mentioned Mario Lopez. I only mentioned those two because they were two actors that just simply stick well in my mind.

I was just joking around with ya that's all.

I'm not sure what to watch on NBC this Fall since my TV has either been on a little bit everyday or itt's off during the night.
