"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" Pre-Release Discussion (Spoilers)

    Like This Thread!
    Announced today:

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Paramount Pictures has scheduled its second "Transformers" sequel to unspool over 2011's Independence Day holiday. No other release is yet set for that weekend.

The studio said Monday it has slotted "Transformers 3" to bow on July 1, 2011. That will give the third installment in the Steven Spielberg-produced franchise a midweek bow in advance of that year's holiday box-office weekend.

A first sequel -- "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" -- is set for wide release on June 24.

    Yikes, this is quick.

The second movie better kick some major butt. Though I'm positive it will.

Whether it's good or not it'll make money and that gives them the excuse to make a new one. Especially since the 3rd is supposed to be the last.

That's immaterial. What it had better do is make money hand over fist. And it will, make no mistake, it may well even set a new record.

There are plenty of other 80s toys for them to adapt.

Here is what Bay said on his forum:

    Wait a minute!

I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 - they asked me on the phone - I said yes to July 4 - but for 2012 - whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.

I was always under the thought that the targetmasters and headmasters were just toy excuses and would serve no real purpose in a battle. but I was judging that by what I saw as the final season of TF on tv. Seeing the movie last year though made me think that human sized weapons that could transform and go off on their own like Frenzy, would be a good idea. Probably would have done a better job of catching Sam during that whole chase scene with Megatron.

As far as combiners go, that would be an awesome sight to see. It has to be just Devastator though. Having more than one would cheapen the experience.

No! Nooooo! This is the worst thing that's ever happened to me ever!!! Why do bad things happen to good people?!?

Hopefully this is just another of Bay's trademark comments that will be retracted soon. Remember when he denounced BluRay? I'm sure he just needs a quick break, and then a big enough paycheck will tempt him back for a 3rd installment.

Speaking of paychecks, it was reported recently that Bay got $75 million for the first Transformers. He got a percentage of the gross. So, he's rich enough that he doesn't have to make another movie for the rest of his life.

i can't imagine he's just stop working just because he made a lot of money. he's still young and i assume still enjoys his work.

Hasn't he been saying this all along? Not that he won't make Transformers 3, but that he wants to take time off to make a 'smaller film' between 2 and 3? As per normal Bay behavior I expect a blog post on his site in a few weeks saying "after talking with Paramount and thinking about it I'll do it". Like the whole Blueray/HD DVD rant he went on, only to about face weeks later.

Obviously he's not quitting. He made Transformers 2 after all, but mr. happy's claim that he'd do it for the money doesn't seem likely. He's already rich enough. Especially since he's also getting a percentage of the sequel. So, he may be $75 million richer with this movie. So, unless Bay is greedy I don't see him doing movies for the money.

there's nothing wrong with doing something for money, but that shouldn't be the sole reason. I don't get the idea that it either has to be for the love of the art or the money. As if you can't do something because you enjoy it and want to be well compensated for the effort.

Some teachers don't make that much money but they don't do it for free either.

As long as they don't get Bryan Signer or Tim Story I don't care who make it.

That's fine. Bay is hardly necessary for a third one to get made. He surely isn't the only guy in Hollywood that is capable of adapting Transformers.

And hey, if it means an end to the shaky camera...

unfortunately there are way too many people that use that device. It was fine in saving private ryan but even then you could tell what was going on.

Sure, it does. Like Hobbes said, it's usually just a question of adequate compensation, but having done two of these almost back to to back, it's no surprise if he's got a bit of Transformers fatigue, and might not feel like cranking out another one for summer 2011. So whether it takes a change of release date or more money, assuming the second one is as big a hit as the first, the studio will find a way to tempt him back.
