Twilight Steps into Potter's Old Shoes

The surprising announcement yesterday by Warner Bros. that they've decided to move Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment of the popular and lucrative series, to 2009 to help fill their summer roster has sparked a lot of debate and speculation over the last 24 hours. Undaunted by any of it, Summit Entertainment announced today that they will move their anticipated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's teen romance novel Twilight into the slot vacated by Half-Blood Prince, upping the release date from the movie's original December 12 opening to November 21, the week before Thanksgiving. It will now be going up against Disney's animated movie Bolt which itself moved into the slot yesterday after Warner Bros' decision.
The Hollywood Reporter has the full story including a quote from Summit's Rob Friedman, who stated that they were "by no means are trying to fill the shoes of the incredible Potter franchise for 2008, rather we are just looking to bring the fans of Stephenie Meyer's incredible book series the film as soon possible from a programming perspective." What about The Spirit?
Yea, the holiday season is actually not too bad. Here is what we have to look forward to:
Oct. 31
Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The latest from director Kevin Smith, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Bank.
Nov. 7
Quantum of Solace. The new James Bond movie.
Nov. 14
Australia. The epic movie directed by Baz Luhurman, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. This looks like it'll be one of the big Oscar movies.
Nov. 21
Twilight. Should be popular with teenage girls.
Bolt. Should be popular with family audiences.
Nov. 26
Four Christmases. Another holiday movie from Vince Vaughn.
Dec. 19
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Brad Pitt and David Fincher's third collaboration.
Dec. 25
The Spirit
Dec. 26

Not surprised Half Blood Prince's changed release date caused other films to up their own release.
Funny how they keep trying to push the Twilight series as the next Harry Potter. It'll make it even funnier when the movie crashes and burns.
"As I bit into the nectarine, it had a crisp juiciness that was very pleasurable, until I realized that it wasn't a nectarine at all, but a HUMAN HEAD."

I never understood the Harry Potter and Twilight feud created by the media and fans. Both are completely opposite. Harry Potter is about wizards and Twilight is about vampires. One is fantasy and the other is horror. Plus, both appeal to different audiences. Harry Potter is a children's book, first and foremost, and Twilight is for teenage girls. However, both have gone beyond their target audience. Overall, I think Twilight has a chance cause Bolt looks like a piece of crap.
Looking at the actual figures and demographics, the comparisons are almost baseless. They're both YA novels written by women that have sold very well. But Harry Potter is an international phenomenon with massive crossover appeal. Twilight is barely known outside of the U.S. and its fanbase is almost universally young and female (let's not mention the Twimoms). The sales figures aren't even close. It's very overblown.

Regardless, I don't think the studio cares. The movie cost $37 million to make. Even if it gets its butt kicked by Bolt it will still make a nice profit from U.S. and International ticket sales as well as from DVDs. Compared to Harry Potter, which cost anywhere from $100-200 million to produce, these people have less pressure.
When is Star Trek anyways?
I'm not sure that I'm that interested in The Spirit. It looks like Frank Miller is just making Sin City again.
Quite so.
And fans of the books, which are massively popular. Must read them one of these days.Twilight. Should be popular with teenage girls.
3Bolt. Should be popular with family audiences.
That hamster things is so freakin' cute!
Nov. 26
Four Christmases. Another holiday movie from Vince Vaughn.
I'm really looking forward to that, but it's not due until next year, is itValkyrie. Tom Cruise and Bryan Singer WWII thriller.?
Summer was nuts this year, they probably want to recoup a bit.
Well, that answers the question of what you think then.
The books aren't quite at that level, but they're still very popular. And the thought that the movie will "crash and burn" seems dubious to me based on the evidence of the popularity of the novels, which is such that I actually meet people who are fans at my retail store job.
Not it will most likely do any good, but I encourage any interested parties to sign this petition.
"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one."

Nothing was funnier than the massively emotional dissappointment I started seeing on all my friends-who-are-girl's facebook updates when they were done the last Twilight book. I wonder if all these teen girls being so embittered will hurt the movie's chances of even getting them to come out and see it at all.
I bet Paramount is regretting pushing back Star Trek now.
"If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business, because we'd be cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down. "
