NBC Universal announces 2008 Olympic broadcast schedule

NBC Universal will broadcast more than 3600 hours of the 2008 Summer Olympics from China on NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, and Telemundo. They are also creating two stations devoted solely to basketball and soccer that will broadcast all the games live. HD coverage will be shown on NBC HD, USA HD, and Universal HD. The "appeal" is that the world comes together, seems to drop its differences (if only for a while) and engages in non-mean-spirited competition. But '80 and '84 went against that (we boycotted the '80 games and in retaliation Russia boycotted the '84 games).

I'll be watching, as I prefer the Summer games to the Winter games, plus these are the next to last Summer games before the world supposedly ends.

One question: Why the HELL is CNBC showing the Olympics (they've done so for years so it's nothing new)?

You would be incorrect in this assessment. This is the permanent schedule that NBC announced on Wednesday, after finding out when all the events were scheduled. There will be no changes. FYI though- I meant for it to say 2008 Olympic broadcast schedule.

As far as the appeal goes, I don't know about you, but being a sports fan I love having a wide range of sports to view. I also enjoy the idea of having the best in our country represent us to see how we compete against other nations. I'm always proud when we succeed. Nowadays we're the dominant giant, which is why many people have stopped viewing the Olympics, but you can't tell me there isn't some sort of pride when you watch miracles like in the movie Miracle occur. Heck, sometimes I'll root for the underdog because of the Cinderella story it gives us and allows us to look forward to.

The appeal has been there, no doubt. However, we also need to remember that this is the fourth summer Olympic games held in a city under authoritarian rule, with the biggest and most significant issue being the whole Tibet thing (I understand that Tibet is holding its own Olympics).

That being said, while I haven't heard of any boycotting going on, nonetheless, I will watch the Olympics, but not the opening ceremonies. I'm not what you'd call a fan of the Olympics, but they have always interested me, so I will watch the games themselves at least. It's not everyday you get to see events like rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming.

Wow, that is a LOT of effort NBC is putting into a huge ratings bomb. Overseas games are never a big draw for the network, I don't see how this will be any different. On the plus side, in regards to full disclosure/responsible reporting, it's great that NBC is taking on this project to provide as much coverage for Olympics fans as possible.

That's the problem. The Olympics are supposed to, in theory, unify the world, but when it comes right down to it its history is marred with sometimes major, sometimes minor, but always telling examples of the true nature of humanity...we're in fact all huge losers when it comes to non-mean-spirited competition.

Basically the only difference between this Summer Olympics and the one in 2004 is that Oxygen is airing the games instead of Bravo, and they have added the two 24-hour networks (which is actually 4 24-hour networks. The other two 24-hour networks being run by NBC will be providing the games in different languages- as in other than English and Spanish). USA will be airing nearly twice as much coverage (last time they only aired the Team USA games that weren't on NBC), and Oxygen, while still getting the same Monday through Friday schedule that Bravo had, actually gets an additional hour, from 2 to 3 hours a day. MSNBC, CNBC, and NBC will be airing the exact same amount of coverage as before, and Telemundo will actually be airing something other than soccer. Last time they aired all the soccer games and nothing else. I guess when you have the 24-hour NBC Soccer Channel, which will have options in English and Spanish, then you can spread that coverage out some more.

I don't care about the NFL, NBA, College Sports, MLB...but I'm a hardcore Olympics junkie. I love the breadth of coverage offered by NBC Universal this year, especially the option available to the US for the first time--streaming online coverage!!

Usually, my quirky rural cable provider only brings in the Olympic coverage on NBC and USA, but USA's expanded their coverage greatly since '04, so its a delight to see. I love all of the Olympic sports, pretty much, but have favorites in Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Soccer, Women's and Men's Basketball, Archery, Badminton, Field Hockey, Handball, long-distance track and field, and more.

And, of course, with no softball and baseball in 2012 thanks to a dumb IOC vote, I'll be watching as much of those two sports as I can. It'll also be exciting to see NBC's coverage in HD for the first time.

During the Olympics, I watch just the Olympics and nothing else--not even a show I watch every day loyally: The Price is Right!

When the Olympics first began airing on CNBC and MSNBC in 1998, I did have a WTF moment, but now I have come to accept that it is basically what NBC wants, and the ratings for those networks are typically 4 to 5 times higher during the Olympics than their regular daily shows provide, even if it does mean that NBC's actual coverage gets watered down. That's why NBC will probably keep the Olympics after the current contract runs out. They're losing money on NBC's coverage, but they're gaining money and viewers on all the other networks from it.

But, of course, you won't find any live streaming of most of the events that really matter -- track, swimming, gymnastics.

But swimming ang gymnastics are on a schedule that's bass-ackwards from what the athletes are used to -- qualifying heats at night, then finals the next morning.

The finals of the swim events and the primary gymnastics sessions (i.e., the ones U.S. is in) will be at 10 A.M. Beijing time so they can be on live in prime time in the U.S.

Yes and no. If it's same day tape, then the spoilers are posted online before it is shown. NBC's theory is that the ratings went down in the winter Olympics because people already knew what the results would be. That's why they are showing so many events online and on cable live.

At the same time, most swimming events are done early morning or afternoon anyway so they can use a stadium with sun windows, so I have no problem with NBC asking that it be done then. Also, Burg, go back and watch the recent summer games. Swimming qualifiers have been in the morning with the Finals at night since the Atlanta Games for the actual Olympics (if you consider 4 or 5 in the afternoon to be night). It might be done otherwise with qualifiers and World Events, but the Olympics have been doing it that way since Atlanta, so it's not just NBC asking them to change it.

Track & Field has always been done throughout the entire day. That's not changing. Gymnastics will still be done on a same-day tape, so that's not changing. Really the only thing changing is NBC is giving USA more coverage so they can show most of the events live, and they are also making it where multiple networks will be showing the games at the same time instead of having it rotate from USA to MSNBC to CNBC to Oxygen to NBC to MSNBC to USA like they did with the 2004 games.

I don't get what you're trying to point out .... but regardless of whether the finals have been at 5 pm or 8 pm, there's NEVER been a swim meet where the finals start at 10 in the morning, which is how it's gonna be in Beijing.

(Well, there was that one pre-Olympic meet earlier this year so that the swimmers could get a taste of this upside-down schedule.)
