Marvel Unveils Plan for Future Live-Action Movies

    Like This Thread!
A few reports have popped up online about what Marvel plans to do in the future for their live-action films.

    Newsarama Blog has a round-up:

Marvel’s Captain America movie, planned for a May 2011 release, will be a period film, set during World War II.

So says Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who spoke to online journalists yesterday at Universal Studios about The First Avenger: Captain America and other projects.

That would seem to imply the movie will stay at least relatively true to the character’s comic-book origin, and tie directly into the Super-Soldier Serum references in The Incredible Hulk.

On that note, Feige confirmed speculation about a certain object glimpsed in a laboratory scene from Iron Man: Yes, that’s Captain America’s shield.
He also provided a few more details on Thor, saying that it will take place largely in Asgard, mythical home of the Norse gods: “”The film is not all Asgard, but it will be a big chunk in Asgard, yeah.”

Screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell) is expected to submit a draft of the script in a couple of weeks.
    Chud.com has more:
    On Future Crossovers

The sky's the limit right now. It's us being very cautious and careful about how we do these crossovers so that we don't collapse under our own weight - as even every 12 or 15 years the comics do; they revamp and do new number ones and get back to what the characters were all about. I don't want [the movies] to forget what the characters are all about and, knock on wood, the interconnectivity will be that extra bit of fun for comic fans. And I think that everybody that stayed in their seats to watch the Nick Fury scene at the end of Iron Man are, whether they read comic books or not, fans of the bigger Marvel continuity.

On Getting Spider-Man or The X-Men Into Crossovers

Never say never. Who knows. When I was a kid I remember seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny parachuting together in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The truth is that we're not even considering or thinking about it right now because we've got three to five years of I hope great movies with the characters that we do control, all leading up to The Avengers. We have that core Avengers group, but what happens after that...
    As does Scifi.com:
According to Feige, the 'Captain America' movie is going to be a period film, set in World War II. The lead role has not yet been cast and rumors that Matthew McConaughey would star in it are untrue.

Speaking of Cap, Feige did confirm that fans who thought they saw his shield in the background of the 'Iron Man' movie are correct. The shield prop was included as an easter egg. The Marvel honcho also said they are negotiating with director Jon Favreau for the sequel and expect to have him fully on board soon.

With regards to 'Thor', Feige told journalists that a long stretch of the movie is set in Asgard, but not the entire movie. He also confirmed that director Matthew Vaughn is, indeed, gone from the project and a new director will be announced this summer. Mark Protosevich is working on a new draft of the script.

Awesome. Most of it we already know, except for where and when CA and Thor were going to take place, and for some of the nods given in each movie (I've heard of other references but not these), and most importantly they say "never say never".

...although I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, since Marvel leased the movie rights or however that works to the other companies, and I doubt they're going to give back Spidey or the X-Men this soon, what with all the X-spin-off's and Sony wanting to make 6 Spider-Man films and trying to do damage control from the last one (which I don't think was nearly as bad as some people think, not as as good as SM2, but that's a WHOLE OTHER topic.)

But what's probably more important is that they're trying to keep it simple and do not want the various movies to collapse upon themselves with too much continuity. Hell, they even admitted it happens in comics every few years and requires reboots (like the Hulk quasi-reboot-sequel), so it sounds like they've got their heads set firmly on their shoulders.

.....and who knows, maybe they can work a deal out with Sony for any future Avengers movies. They would be perfect warm-up's/commercials for any future Spider-Man films, which are going to need it. And of course other B-list characters can always show up that haven't benn licensed yet.

P.S. Is the Ant-Man film going to be a comedy like some rumors have said? Its always possible he could show up in Avengers 2, providing the movie version of Ant-Man can coincide in a funny film and serious film and not be too...jarring?

DC, meanwhile, are sitting on their butts.
Not it will most likely do any good, but I encourage any interested parties to sign this petition.

Come on, Hanshotfirst! Don't you know that they're planning on considering the possible notion of saying maybe to not NOT-doing these types of projects for the Batman/Superman and Justice League, as Marvel is with Iron Man, Hulk and The Avengers!?

....you probably do...and that's why you're as annoyed as me about it. lol. Granted, that's pilfered and paraphrased from ItsJustSomeRandomGuy's "I'm a Marvel and I'm a PC" stuff, but he's known for saying what ALL the real world superhero fans know and think and feel!

So what we have here is where Cap and Thor are going to take place. Good stuff! I'm sure there are a lot of opinions about Cap, and I'm even more sure I'd agree with all of them. Specifically, however, I like the WWII idea because it feels....at home for Cap, ya know? It would even work better for me if Cap had ALREADY been around BECAUSE his origins were based in the WWII era, and movie continuity stuff can be written to cover why he wasn't present.

I still don't see Cap's shield in the Iron Man screenshots though. I saw a bright and lovely shinning star of lovliness in the background, but that was Gweneth Paltro. I was looking for the OTHER bright and lovely shinning star of lovliness.

I like the idea of Cap being a WWII period piece, mostly because of the continuity it will have with the Avengers movie; it'll enable the audience to sympathise with how lost Cap feels in the modern world if they've seen him in his element earlier in the summer.

I was hoping they would do the WWII story for Cap. It also makes for the perfect ending to the movie. Him getting frozen.... and then found in the Avengers movie.

    Captain America in WWII? YES!!!

Now just cast the right actor.

Though I think, so as not to limit Cap's own solo adventures to just one film, it shouldn't end with him getting frozen. Introduce him in The Avengers that way, but leave the ending of his first movie open-ended to make room for more WWII adventures, then maybe after a trilogy have it end with him getting frozen. And please, just call it Captain America. None of this "The First Avenger" subtitle crap.

That's exactly how I feel, and I'm all for having Cap's movie set in WWII. The movie could simply end with him being thrown into the ocean and be frozen in a block of ice, or whatever. To tie it in with the upcoming Avengers, they could have a scene after the credits set in present day with SHIELD coming across his body. I think that'd be the perfect way to go.
