I smell a gang war brewing with The Film Crew.
Oh, I'm sure it'll be a "friendly" brewing war.
And then you have Jim "sell-out" Mallon who has this upcoming "animated MST3K adventures" idea coming out soon.
*yawn*
I wiush they'd just find some way to get the actual MST3K series back on television where it belongs.

Joel has been off doing nobody seems to know what; he showed up in a couple of great episodes of Freaks and Geeks and he has some TV writing credits to his name. That's about it.
But now he's back with a vengeance, and he's staking his claim to the genre of talking over films. His new project is called Cinematic Titanic, and it will feature Trace Beaulieu (the real Crow and Dr. Clayton Forrester!), J. Elvis Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl and Frank Conniff. Yes, TV's Frank.
The crew has licensed their first film, which Joel describes as making 'Manos the Hands of Fate look like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians in a car wreck with Eegah! with notes of peach.' That should be out (presumably on DVD) by Christmas; in December the gang will be making their live debut in San Francisco for an ILM/Lucasfilm only crowd. I have to imagine they'll be tackling a Star Wars film. That show could make its way to us sometime after.
The Joel vs Mike debate has been largely academic, but now they're in direct and fierce competition. I can't wait to see what Joel and his original MST buddies have got up their sleeves. Stay tuned for more info, and visit the Cinematic Titanic website to sign up for the newsletter!

I've got to head to a college class, but before that.
DUDE.
This is awesome, but it does make you wonder when they'll all get together and do a new MST3K proper, even as a special, occassional thing or something. Although I doubt there's any real evil plan and they're fighting each other, it just seems they went their separate ways, did new things, and then went back to riffing in their own ways, and its just now some of them are doing something that uses the actual MST3K characters. In any case, all the luck in the world to them!
They to reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea;y need to get together. Maybe make a annual or semi-annual Direct-to-dvd MST3K DVD with the whole cast.

Cool. I've always enjoyed Mike Nelson, but it'll be nice to see Joel again. Last time I saw him was when he did the TV Wheel pilot that aired after the first MST3K series finale.

Wow. This is incredible. First Mike and Kevin riff Star Trek V, now it looks like Joel and his original crew may be tackling a Star Wars movie. (Or possibly Howard the Duck?)
Incidentally, Jim Mallon (voice of Gypsy and MST3K producer) is on the verge of unveiling a brand new MST3K.com with a flash-animated series featuring the MST3K robots. (source: Satellite News)
Looks like practically every major MST3K player is working on something related to the show now. This just might be the revival we've been waiting for. Let's hope it all goes well.
Would it be possible to get Mike and Joel TOGETHER, or is there too much bad blood?
Not it will most likely do any good, but I encourage any interested parties to sign this petition.

I really dislike the fact that people are treating this as a competition between Mike and Joel. I know the "vs." debate will never end (like Kirk vs. Picard) but it's not like they're actually rivals or are trying to one-up each other. This is a great time to be a MST3K fan, so why stir up negativity? Just be happy that funny people are making fun of lousy movies.

Fans are never happy unless they've got something to be mad at.
Mike will always be my favorite, since I was exposed to him first, but the more I watch of Joel the more he grows on me. I don't care to pick who's the "better" of the two, because just like Kirk and Picard, they've both got positive qualities that outshine the negative.
We'll always have "favorites," but this is one Trekkie/MiSTie who doesn't care who's "best."

But Tennant? He's SO much better than Eccleston.

It would be funny if they Joel had to retire and get Mike to replace him agian![]()

I almost seems like a competition, with the two hosts both doing different projects and taking different members of the writing team with them. For that matter, I wonder why Joel is getting back into it, since he seemed to have no regrets ever since he left MST3K. Well, hopefully this and The Film Crew are doing good on DVD and they'll last for awhile.

Well, I didn't start the thread seeing some kind of rivalry (hence I'm a little annoyed with the thread renaming). But if we're comparing Joel to Mike, I'd probably side with Mike. Mike seemed to do riffs that worked alone and were based on the source material. In comparison, Joel seemed to make more obsecure references and the jokes seemed to rely on the Joel character. I'm not saying he didn't do well or provide any laughs but if you just want to sit and laugh, Mike's your man. With Joel, I had alot of "...The reference is lost on me" moments.
look a couple posts up. you'll see i merged the threads together since they're discussing the same thing. sorry i didn't keep your original title but i didn't see that it really mattered. people who are interested in this already know what's being discussed. i'll go change it back, though, since you posted your thread first

I don't want to see this as a rivalry either, although it does appear like "camps" are forming. Mike, Kevin and Bill (a group with ties to the latest MST episodes) and Joel, Trace and Josh (tied to the earliest MST episodes) are together. It's only natural that they would do it like this, since that's who they're probably most comfortable with (Kevin could go either way, though, since he was Servo since season 2). One just can't help but wonder why they're doing two completely separate projects instead of coming back together. Even if Jim Mallon can't/won't restart MST3K as a direct-to-video deal (assuming Joel, Mike, Kevin, Paul, Bill, Trace, Frank, Josh and/or Mary Jo WANT to restart MST3K) they can pool their talent like in the old days.
But really, nobody knows their current state of relationships but them. All we can do is speculate and watch what comes of these new arrangements. I'd like to see all three projects succeed rather than one dominating the others in terms of sales/quality. It's not like they're all being broadcast on different channels at the same time or anything.
