from comingsoon.net:
Caprica
From executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica), writer Remi Aubuchon (24) and NBC Universal Television Studio, this new series is set over a half a century before the events that play out in Battlestar Galactica. The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot - a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica) Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga.
I hate prequels with an unbridled passion.
I hope this is just a terrible terrible rumor.

I like the notion of expanding the personal and factual history of the new BSG universe. It's an interesting angle for a sciënce fiction series and a potentially excellent complement to the new series. I am somewhat worried by the talk of, "sexual politics," however as I've found the abundant screwing on the new BSG somewhat annoying and distracting.
I imagine this might explain why the third season was pushed to an October premiere since the same producers and creätive staff are likely involved.

Well asumedly Caprica would actually be closer to the style of the original series so maybe this is an attempt to appease those "It's not BG!" purists.
Sounds like "Dynasty in Space".
These creators have proven themselves quite capable, it's just I hate prequels. You already know what's going to happen. You know as many times as William Adama gets jacked, he's not going to die and that they can fight as hard as they want, but the Colonies are still going to get wiped out.
BSG has become one of my favorite shows of all time, so I'll watch... I just wish they'd tried something else, like a Buck Rogers reimaging or something.

Same here... theres no surprise at the end and you pretty much everything that is going to happen so why bother?PHP Code:I hate prequels with an unbridled passion.
I think this appeals to a different sort of story sensibility. This series isn't about its ending, but rather I think it will lay the heart of things in filling the details of prewar Caprica and the colonies in as well as character interplay. I'll admit it is the latter potential to explore the undisrupted world of the colonies more than the possibility of the characters that excites my twisted little mind, but both are attractive. It isn't about what will happen, but how it will happen.Originally Posted by Chibi Kageboshi
I suppose it appeals to the history addict in me. I know that the thirteen colonies won the revolutionary war and eventually forged a stable government, but the story of how they managed it still fascinates me.
I think that a hoary, ancient cliché suffices to describe the appeal to me: It's the journey that counts, not the destination.

They can tell you how it happened in the current series.... they can work it in somehow.. i dunno.. i would prefer if they had to do a prequal that it would be about Kobol. This series isn't about its ending, but rather I think it will lay the heart of things in filling the details of prewar Caprica and the colonies in as well as character interplay.

Well that's where twists come into play. With the two series playing simultaniously, one might suspect they might pay attention to stories of both and write according to a major revelation in one or both series.Originally Posted by JohnCrichton

I think he means so much of Galactica on Caprica seems contemporary - as in their vehicles - that a show set 50 years in the past will have cars relative to half a century behind us.Originally Posted by Chibi Kageboshi
Depends on the focus behind the show. Soime stories do work retrospectively. Heck a great deal of Galactica episode by episode is retrospective; it quite often starts with the end. In the end the drama is what pulls people in week after week, not who might die from the main cast.Originally Posted by JC

What would be interesting is to discover that some of our Cylon models are based on humans from the past. One or two of the lesser-used Cylon actors might even be a regular in this new series.
* I'm still only in season 1, so forgive me if that's since been dismissed as a possibility.![]()
ron moore's involvement makes me a believer... it also makes me nervous for the continued perfection of galactica. i hope there is enough of ron to go around.
No. Moore said in an interview (In response to a question if there was a Boomer that was human), "No, there's not. I mean, the idea is not there was one like an original human model that they were copied from. The idea was that these were... these models of Cylon were developed out of their own study of us. The Cylons on some level looked at humanity and said, 'Well, you know what, there's really only twelve of you... and these are the twelve.' And then if you look at them, they kind of represent different archetypes of what humanity is."Originally Posted by EinBebop

And what the frack does "sexual politics" mean, anyway?
I'll watch, but I'm incredibly disappointed. I would've liked to see Buck Rogers revived with the talent and strength that they do Battlestar Galactica.
We'll see, but I say it's a waste of good talent and resources.
I stand pretty firmly behind the hatred of prequels.
It's like already knowing the end of the saga.
Only time I'm okay with "prequel" stuff is like Tales of the Jedia or Knights of the Old Republic, when it is SOOOOOO distant that it can embody itself and be its own world.
Ah welll....![]()

I understand your dislike towards prequels, because for the very same reasons you listed, most of us acknowledge as problems (though your desire for a new Buck Rogers makes me weep. Heh). However, a lot of artists (story makers included) excel better when they've got to creatively limit themselves, and make things work with what they've got. Some of the best Ideas develop from such situations. Try not to think of 'Caprica' as a box, where you'll know where it ends, instead think of the arcs within the story leading up to the finale.
In say...Power Rangers. Its more or less a given (Except in certain episodes) that the team will destroy the monster by the end of the episode, and yet you still enjoy the episode for its content, not necessarily its structure right?
...did that even make any sense at all?![]()

At first thought, it sounds painfully painful. But the more I think about it, the more I like it.

If I recall correctly, the Battlestar Galactica game that came out on the PS2 recently was originally set to be a classic series thing with the original actors but then changed to William Adama's first adventures 40+ years ago as a pilot. I like the character of Commander Adama a lot, so if he's a major player, I'd be happy. I'd been interested to see who is cast as a young Edward Olmos, too.
