Saving The World... One Homework Assignment At A Time.

"All I ever wanted for him was to save the world." - Steve Stronghold

    Release Date: July 29, 2005
    Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
    Director: Mike Mitchell
Starring: Kelly Preston, Lynda Carter, Michael Angarano, Danielle Panabaker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Bruce Campbell, Dave Foley, Steven Strait, Kurt Russell

Plot Summary: When you're the son of the world's most legendary superheroes The Commander (Russell) and Jetstream (Preston), there is only one school for you - Sky High, an elite high school that is entrusted with the responsibility of molding today's power-gifted students into tomorrow's superheroes. The problem is that Will Stronghold (Angarano) is starting with no superpowers of his own and, worst of all, instead of joining the ranks of the "Hero" class, he finds himself relegated to being a "Sidekick." Now he must somehow survive his freshman year while dealing with an overbearing gym coach (Campbell), a bully with super speed and an dangerous rebel with a grudge (and the ability to shoot fire from his hands)... not to mention the usual angst, parental expectations and girl problems that accompany teenage life. But when an evil villain threatens his family, friends and the very sanctity of Sky High, Will must use his newfound superpowers to save the day and prove himself a "Hero" worthy of the family tradition.

"Welcome to Sky High. You are the decendants of the world's most legendary super heroes." This movie looks like it could be a lot of fun. If nothing else, you can check out Bruce Campbell, Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Oh yeah, one more thing...

This thread is to discuss the movie "Sky High" and is for those who have seen it or are going to see it. If you saw the trailer and decided you do not wish to see the film that is perfectly fine, your input is not needed or wanted here.

You know, I might just see it after all. I mean, the initial impression you get is that it's Disney's lame quick-cash-in on the success of The Incredibles, and it doesn't really "get" the Superhero genre.

But then, the guys over at "Aint it Cool" seem to love it, and say it's like "Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest for Superheroes." So, having invoked the names of two of my most favorite movies, I think I'll give "Sky High" a chance after all.

This is actually one of the very very few movies of the year that I've been looking forward to. I'm hoping to see it Sunday.

I haven't seen it, but it has Bruce Campbell in it, so it has to be good.

Saw this one Thusrday afternoon, and oh yeah, one of my friends was right, I did enjoy it more than I enjoyed Fantastic Four, and it fully met my expectations. Sure, Sky High is predictable (only about 15 minutes of the movie had passed when I figured out who was the villain), and it's pretty simple, but it's just so much fun. It's got a fast pace, colorful characters and scenarios, and a straight-forward yet pleasing storyline. The characters themselves are very adequate, you like the good kids, you wanna smack the bad kids, and other characters end up quite memorable, especially Warren (the kid with fire powers), who has charisma up the wazoo, and Lynda Carter, whom despite her short appearance, she shines every second she's onscreen. Now that's presence! Funny enough, IMO, Bruce Campbell's role in the movie wasn't all that. His first appearance was quite fun, but afterwards he really toned it down. The powers display is very cool, and while the action scenes are not many, they're quite enjoyable and fun ("Save the Civilian" rocked).

Overall, it was a very enjoyable movie that gave me everything I wanted in cool characters, a fast pace and an all-around feel of fun times to it. I reccomend it to anybody. Go see it! ^_^

I saw a matinee of this movie a couple of days ago. I thought it was pretty good. It was just a fun, teen/superhero movie for kids and adults. One of the nice things about it was that the movie never seemed to lose sight of what genres it was paying homage to. As much as I loved The Incredibles, that movie seemed to seem more like a James Bond movie than a superhero movie somewhere towards the middle. Sky High actually kept its eyes on the whole superhero/teen movie idea it set up at the beginning. People said it was predictable, but I didn't see some of the plot twists coming.

Just got back from seeing SKY HIGH. Overall, I liked it. Not as much as I was hoping, but it was certainly enjoyable (more so than THE INCREDIBLES, that's for sure.) Though I think it could have benefitted by being a bit longer, having some more action, and perhaps a bit more to the story. And I wish the villain had had more of a prescence. But since they chose the plot twist they went with, I guess it just didn't leave a lot of room for the villain to do stuff before then. And speaking of the plot twist, it was certainly unexpected, though kind of frustrating because it involved a character I was really liking. And I was disappointed that Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston were pretty underused. I know the movie is about the kids, but I just wish they had both had more to do. They actually seemed kind of wasted. I wanted to see more of what we saw at the beginning, with Kurt taking on that giant robot.

But overall, I liked the movie and will definitely buy the DVD. (Which I hope has deleted scenes, since I noticed some stuff from the trailer was missing. Oddly enough, it was more of Kurt/Kelly in action.)

    I saw it today.

It was quite fun actually. Lots of fun hero cliches, and little jokes here and there that made it alot of fun.

By the way anyone notice the various cartoon voice actors in it? I spotted Tom Kenny for a brief spell and I think the science teacher is the guy who does Pleakly's voice in Lilo and Stitch.

I did spot Tom Kenny there right near the end, and noticed the lady playing his wife also played his wife in COMIC BOOK: THE MOVIE. I believe she's a voice actor as well. (And I had to smile when I saw that it was Roger Murtaugh's house from LETHAL WEAPON that was almost destroyed at the end. lol!!)

Actually, though the villain didn't "appear" until near the end, I have to say that this villain actually does comic book villains proud. Forget the humourous weapon, the villain's whole plan was pretty damn near Doctor Doom-level genius! And while watching it, I couldn't help but think (semi spoilers)
    Spoiler:
That Marvel and DC actually have a pretty thin lineup of truly genius-level FEMALE villains who think BIG like Doctor Doom!

I was looking forward to this movie all summer. I liked it and would recommend, especially to anyone who likes the superhero genre, because the writers were clearly familiar with the genre's trappings, and knew how to play them for humor. Some of the best moments in the film were when the bizarre aspects were played as if they were completely normal:

"Remember when we used to use real civilians?"
"You're not that kid with the six hands, are you?"
"I went through puberty twice for this?"
I only have two complaints about the film: First, the tendency of the story to be a by-the-numbers rehash of every teen movie cliche ever written. Will Stronghold starts out as an outcast, makes friends with his fellow outcasts, is drawn into the "popular" crowd by a self-serving manipulator, wrongly believes that she likes him, blows off his "real" friends to be popular, learns the error of his ways, gets a payback from the girl who used him and learns to appreciate the outcasts for who they are. Take away the superpowers, and Will becomes Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls.
My other complaint is the same one I had for last year's Thunderbirds film. By making the story a feel-good movie for kids, the adult characters, built up as a large shadow from under which the juvenile hero must emerge, become largely irrelevant in a crisis. When a supervillian goes on a rampage in a gymnasium full of superheroes, the only who steps up to try to stop her was the lame-o overaged sidekick? The "heroes" just stood around and waited to get zapped just so they could be removed from the story at the crucial moment when the kids have to take charge. I'm sure if the writer tried, they could have come up with something more logical then this.

    Yes.

Also, the movie played tricks on me. Right when I thought I'd figured it out, from nowhere came another twist each time. It's not the most perfect movie I've seen, but it certainly ranks high on my list.

I work at the theater that got this movie, and when I first heard about it, I though it'd be something like Half-Baked set on an airplane...I was kinda disappointed when I found out it was a Disney thing.

Overall, it's a decent movie. Nothing spectacular or overly disappointing, and it does boast the best bus driver of any movie this year. I was kind of put off by the uber-blatant product placement ("I wish WE had an Xbox!")

watched it yesterday, and it was an entertaining film. I'm glad I never payed to watch it (hey the trailers looked alright), but to just watch it was definately worth the time, while its pretty cheesy it has its good parts that make up for it. They could have done a lot more to make it more memorable and had some wasted opportunities but oh well. I would probably get it if I ever see it in a bargain bin.

I truly hate that name. When I read the topic title, I thought you mean the Sky High Japanese movie/series.
