Stargate: SG-1 newbie question (no spoilers, please!)

So I just saw the movie and started watching the show via Netflix (about ten episodes in now) and I wanted to talk to some of you long-time fans.

My early impression of this show is awe of how consistently good it's been so far. To compare it to TNG, I don't think it has a strong enough cast to take it to the heights that TNG reached, but stories so far are keeping it from reaching the lows that TNG reached even in their best seasons. I'm assuming the show manages to keep this up for the most part, or it wouldn't still be running.

But I am curious... I know that a few seasons in the show shifts from Showtime to SciFi... is there any noticable decrease in quality on any level when this happens? And is it possible to give me a rundown on Stargate Atlantis without spoiling anything for me?

Hopefully I catch up enough to join you guys in the talkbacks before the show goes off the air.

SciFi more or less keeps out of how the show is run, so the show doesn't change too much because of the network move. However, the show does shift a little more toward action at that point, but that's only because of something that happens to someone in the story. I won't say who or what, though.

Actually, I can't tell you too much without ruining an entire season of SG-1. I can tell you that it uses an all-new cast, and involves Earth annexing/colonializing new territory.

Hopefully I catch up enough to join you guys in the talkbacks before the show goes off the air.
Catch up fast enough, and you'll be with us when new episodes of SG-1 start this July.
