Weekend Box Office: 'The Week After Shrek 2'

    Like This Thread!
Well, we have some Memorial Day numbers for you. Though additional numbers will be out tomorrow, and final numbers will be out Tuesday. But for Friday through Sunday, this is what we have.

A close, close race this weekend with Shrek 2 and The Day After Tomorrow resulted in 'Day' taking Friday, but Shrek 2 took Saturday and Sunday. Shrek 2 in it's second weekend took in an additional $73.1 million and giving it a 2 week total of $238.8 million!

The Day After Tomorrow came in a close second with $70 million. Very, very impressive.

Coming in third place was Troy making $11.4 million and it's total now stands at $106.1 million.

Kate Hudson's new movie Raising Helen debuted in fourth place with $11.2 million.

And debuting and rounding out the top 5 is Snoop Dogg's new movie Soul Plane which took in $5.7 million.

Next weekend one new movie opens and it's a big one. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It's a sure bet that we'll have another close race next weekend, but with Shrek 2 taking number one twice, I think Harry Potter will overtake it.

Again, additional numbers will be out tomorrow so I will update then.

    1) Shrek 2- $73,100,000 ($238,800,000)
    2) The Day After Tomorrow- $70,000,000 ($70,000,000) NEW!!!
    3) Troy- $11,461,000 ($106,110,000)
    4) Raising Helen- $11,224,000 ($11,224,000) NEW!!!
    5) Soul Plane- $5,700,000 ($5,700,000) NEW!!!
    6) Van Helsing- $4,857,000 ($108,835,000)
    7) Mean Girls- $4,850,000 ($72,127,000)
    8) Man on Fire- $1,825,000 ($72,707,000)
    9) 13 Going on 30- $1,027,000 ($54,136,000)
    10) Super Size Me- $994,000 ($4,527,000)
    11) Breakin' All the Rules- $875,000 ($10,791,000)
    12) Kill Bill Vol. 2- $514,000 ($63,839,000)

Didn't care to see Day After Tomorrow. Might catch it on DVD. Shrek 2 surprisely picked up #1 spot again, didn't see that coming. Dreamworks is going to get an inflated ego now. And yeah, Harry Potter will undoubtedly beat Shrek 2 next week.

I can't believe how far Troy went down. That's a plunge. Haven't seen it yet, I think I'll catch it on DVD.

Too bad Soul Plane sorta flopped, but it was sorta expected...

    At Shrek 2's success.

Did the kiddies go out and see it twice?

You'd think that after all of the money that it raked in last weekend that it wouldn't have made that much this weekend.

Cause Shrek 2 is the best and Soul Plane is a remade peace of junk...

And Dreamworks' ego will hopefully not be inflated cause Sharktale does indeed look dumb!

Congratulations to Shrek 2, for raking in the highest second weekend in movie history (the previous title holder, of course, being Spider-man).

It was close, but Shrek 2 held on, just as I predicted. From last week...

I expect another great week for "Shrek 2" next weekend. "Day After Tomorrow" just can't hold up to the competition.

Prediction for next week: Harry Potter 3 takes over, and has a big (probably not as huge as Shrek or Day after Tomorrow, but big) weekend.

Not too surprised at Shrek 2's continued success. I saw the trailer for Soul Plane a while ago and said to myself, 'This film looks so stupid, I can't not see it.' It couldn't have cost a whole lot to make, so MGM shouldn't worry too much. I intend on seeing both films eventually.
I feel that a big problem with today's society is that we don't listen to our fellow man -- especially when I'm talking.

Comparing this movie to the classic Airplane! is true blasphemy.

Soul Plane did have it's funny moments, but overall the film fell flat. Less sex and toilet references, more sight gags, and less profanity would have gotten this film a PG-13 and probably a slightly higher spot.

It's not a remake of Airplane.

And if it is, tell me, where did you get this info from?

I remember reading about it on the CNN zipper that it was a remake of Airplane starring Snoop Dogg. But still, the "black" remake thing is getting old before it starts.

Johnson Family Vacation (National Lampoon Vacation send-up)
    Back to School remake (upcoming)

But it could be argued that they're not remaking these films, since no idea is really sacred, but if you make a Diehard-esque movie, it's going to be compared to the film that made it popular first.

Besides the CNN thing, also on VH1's Best Week Ever. So there's two sources taht say it is. It's junk, taht's why it made hardly anything! Shrek 2 is good, that's why it's top 2 weeks in a row!

Soul Plane does rip off one plot device from Airplane

    Spoiler:
The Captain and Co-Captain are unable to fly to plane, so it's up to the guy who owns the plane to pilot it to safety
. Other than that, these are two wildy different films.

There's also Love Don't Cost a Thing, which is a remake of Can't Buy Me Love.

Too bad it doesn't actually make any jokes. Atleast it seemed Soul Plane tried to make jokes, not just squeeze all the references they could to make up for not doing jokes.

Yet it made so many people laugh and is raking in the cash. You can't even compare Soulplane to Shrek 2. Trying to make jokes and actually doing so... Shrek made plenty and succeeded... Soulplane didn't.

It's better to try and fail than never try at all. And I'm not including bodily humor jokes.
