Weekend Box Office: 50 First Dates opens HUGE!

    Like This Thread!
Wow, I knew 50 First Dates was going to be number one, but I didn't know it would be this huge. I guess the second time pairing of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore paid off, and in a big way with $41 million! The movie is the second highest opening in February trailing behind 2001's Hannibal which made $58 million in it's opening weekend but just getting by last year's Daredevil which made $40.3 million.

Last weekend's number one movie fell to second. Barbershop 2 made $15.6 million and a total so far of $44 million.

Miracle fell one place to third with $14 million and a $37 million total.

The Butterfly Effect rose one spot to fourth making $5.7 million and collecting a nice total of $50 million.

And You Got Served rounds out the top 5 with $5.1 million and a $32 million total.

In a Lord of the Rings update, Return of the King came in eighth place with $4.1 million, bringing it's total up to $357.2 million! Worldwide that brings it's total to $948.7 million! But that total should jump up a lot when additional worldwide numbers are released Monday or Tuesday. Monday being a holiday I don't know. But the film finally opened in Japan this weekend where 'King' is expected to do huge numbers and should help it to get to the $1 billion mark.

Next weekend four new movies open. First up is Against the Ropes with Meg Ryan and Omar Epps.

Then we have the kids, teens, tweens movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Lindsay Lohan.

Then there's the definatley adult rated movie Eurotrip. With a bunch of no names and appearances by Lucy Lawless, Lana from 'Smallville' and Matt Damon.

And finally we have Welcome to Mooseport with Ray Romano and the always great and wonderful Gene Hackman.

Busy weekend next week. Here are your numbers....

    1) 50 First Dates- $41,000,000 ($41,000,000) NEW!!!
    2) Barbershop 2: Back in Business- $15,600,000 ($44,074,000)
    3) Miracle- $14,021,000 ($37,061,000)
    4) The Butterfly Effect- $5,700,000 ($50,045,000)
    5) You Got Served- $5,100,000 ($32,083,000)
    6) Along Came Polly- $5,077,000 ($81,634,000)
    7) Catch That Kid- $4,350,000 ($10,850,509)
    8) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King- $4,150,000 ($357,203,000)
    9) Cold Mountain- $3,726,125 ($87,547,525)
    10) Mystic River- $3,545,000 ($74,506,000)
    11) Monster- $2,944,524 ($19,469,983)

50 First Dates was a pretty good movie, and I'm glad it got to #1.

I foresee Euro-trip opening no higher than #7. The only reason I'm going to see it is because I have a free pass. Don't get me wrong, I like these kinds of movies, but I don't think it'll be a hit.

Welcome to Mooseport looks like it'll be a sleeper hit, definately placing in the top 5. I might check it out eventually.

'Confessions' and 'Against the Ropes' will (hopefully) be lost in the shuffle. Neither look very interesting.

"50 First Dates" opened better than expected. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more movies with the duo of Sandler and Barrymore.

    Not much else to report.

Shocked to see "You got Served" still in the top 5. (shudders)

"50 First Dates": Yay for Sandler! And when you consider that Roger Ebert of all people liked it...

"Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen": What? I like Lindsay Lohan!

"Eurotrip": Looks pretty good, with the same writers as "The Cat in the Hat" (and the only factor of "Road Trip" and "Old School" it's having being executive producer Ivan Reitman, and missing actor Seann William Scott and director Todd Phillips).

"Welcome to Mooseport": Looks pretty funny.
I think Scooby-Doo is knida over-rated and all of the HB Dogs should be praised.
Wouldn't it be great if their could be more Peanuts specials on DVD?
It was just what my career needed - I was at the top and now I'm at the bottom.

    Damn! $41 million?!

The movie doesn't even look that good...

Though as always the 11 year olds go running for the theaters when they see a new Sandler movie commercial. (They're alright but it seems that his movies are always targeted to that crowd. )

The Adam Sandler & Rob Schnider duo is getting annoying to me.

Good to see that Barbershop 2 is still in the top 3.

Then we have the kids, teens, tweens movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Lindsay Lohan.
That character is like a clone from her other one is Freaky Friday.

Against The Ropes looks like another Marci X.

wow.. that movie made $41 million!?! amazing.

i guess adam sandler is still a box office monster.

i just wonder, though.. how much will the penguins ask for the sequel in turn, since the elephant seals will probably ask for their weight in pounds, raised to the 2nd power, in dollars ? (2000 ^ 2 = $4,000,000) !!!

BIG RETURN OF THE KING UPDATE!!!

Updated worldwide numbers are out, and Return of the King is now just about $300,000 away from tying and then overtaking second place Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Updated numbers show that 'King' has a worldwide take of $975.5 million. 'Potter' has $975.8 million. By the time most people read this post, ROTK will have already passed 'Potter.'

The big surge in this weekend was thanks in part to ROTK opening in Japan on Valentine's Day which opened with $14.6 million. ROTK is a shoe in now to finally break the $1 billion mark and become only the second film in movie history to accomplish that feat. Reaching $1 billion, now only $25 million away, should happen by next weekend.

Heh. I'm glad Sandler's newest movie did so well.

"Welcome to Mooseport" looks somewhat promising.

I doubt that... Although it has yet to open in China...

Anyhow, how was Sean Astin in 50 First Dates? That's my main concern, that his career continue because I really enjoy his acting. Him and Viggo as well, I feel proprietary interest and hope LotR doesn't destroy their careers.

I also have mixed feelings about the passion but they involve politics and as I was warned before, I'm not gonna bring them up here. I'll see the movie before I comment on it though.

I found I didn't really care that much about Dates so the box office didn't do much for me this week. I don't know how many I will actually make it to, but I have Ropes, Drama Queen and Eurotrip on my mental list of movies I wouldn't mind seeing. Really looking forward to Welcome to Mooseport though. I hope Gene and Ray do well.

Impossible. It's still only at the halfway mark. ROTK is watched multiple times by fanatics, but Titanic was watched multiple times by mainstream audiences.

Well, at least it'll beat Harry Potter. And I have yet to see 50 first dates.
Also I think Passion has a huge potential of beating Titanic if recieved well, but i'm not so sure.

I think it will do well, but I doubt it will beat Titanic.
