    Get a Horse! (2013) Pre-Release Discussion Talkback

    Like This Thread!

Well, there is an all-new Mickey Mouse cartoon, titled Get a Horse!, which will be released with Frozen.

From what I've been hearing of it, it starts out as a throwback to the early early black-and-white sound cartoons with Mickey in a barnyard setting. Mickey, Minnie, Horace, Clarabelle and others will partake in a musical hayride until Peg-Leg Pete comes in from behind in his jalopy and gets into a scuffle with Mickey. At that point, Mickey literally bursts out of the screen and turns into a computer-generated color figure. Soon, the characters will be switching from 2D to 3D entering and exiting the screen.

I am totally excited for this short, as I am a sucker for throwbacks and black-and-white stuff. The 2D animation (headed by the great Eric Goldberg) is very fluid and the transition to CGI is pretty seamless and well-done. Here is a piece of the action in this video; it starts at 9:48.

I saw it yesterday at the 15th Animation Show of Shows.

    It...was...amazing!

It has a very clever use of interaction between the two words, plus it takes various jabs at modern technology and has a pretty hilarious and exciting climax. Sadly, I saw it as a "flat" version, but I'll see it again this Saturday when I see a preview of Frozen (I'm a member of ASIFA-East), this time in stereoscopic 3D.

Yeah, I hear tell 3d is the way to see it, like Gravity.

Any chance it'll air on TV or online sometime soon?

Considering it's a theatrical short, I'm guessing you'd have to wait till Oscar season to even see it online if they get a Best Animated Short nomination. They have done this with previous shorts, so I see no reason why they wouldn't for this one.
Yup. It's a signature. Go away if you're expecting something interesting here.

Finally, we get some official footage for this short.

The animation does look a bit too good for the late 20's, but it's not very distracting. The sporadic discolored frames are a nice touch.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was thinking that! I always had sort of problem with Eric Goldberg working on this. His animation is really good, but the problem is that it's TOO good.
Ah well, it's not an easy thing to accomplish and it still looks great.

Well, it does give some incredible foreshadowing for what's to come later on in the short...
