    My Belated Take On Atlantis

    Like This Thread!
Finally went to see it, and I can see why it doesn't have the legs of Shrek. Most of the characters are sketches at best, and the Mole character doesn't really work as comic relief. My husband, not a toon fan, found Atlantis boring. He simply couldn't care about the characters.

Atlantis was beautifully animated for the most part. I still am not fond of the mixing of CGI and cell, tho. I also found the character designs somewhat distracting. Milo looked like an escapee from Doonsberry with that long square nose (is this what everyone refers to as the anime influence?). And I really disliked the pointiness of the designs. Characters had square fingers with triangular fingernails and lips that appeared to have sharp edges. And the villainess' nose, which seemed to sit on her upper lip below a huge space of empty space was really weird. Was she supposed to look sexy?

I found all of the characters unattractive in one way or another, and their development was so thin that I didn't really care about them for the most part--can't even remember most of their names. Fox did a great job of voicing Milo, tho, and the animators captured Fox's physical movements as well.

It was a valient try by Disney, but they still have lots to learn when it comes to maturing their product. Alot of pretty action without alot of heart (and very little real humor) does not a good animated movie make.

About Atlantis' style: it's actually not anime. Instead, it's based off the style of... er... I can't remember his name, but he's famous for doing the Hellboy coming along with contributing some designs to B:TAS. Personally, I didn't think it was that bad... not perfect, but I was glad that Disney had the guts to try something new.

That's the guy. Thanks, I knew somebody would know that. Yup, Disney flew him up at numerous points to give them advice on how to draw in his style.

Given the mostly lukewarm response to this movie, I am deciding to wait for the DVD. Besides character designs, how similar is it in story and plot to Nadia?
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

Because all of you demanded it, here is my take on the film! I thought it was just ok. Like Crazy 8's said the mole guy's humor didn't work at all. Alos, during the first 30 minutes, I practically fell asleep. After that it got better. Then it slacked off at the end. What I'm trying to say, is that it wasn't consistent. Something just didn't feel quite right about it. That's my two cents.

Was wondering where youve been crazy8`s!

Ive been in new york for two weeks visiting my girlfriend (the first time ive been to a state more than two hours away and the first time ive been away from home without family members)

    We saw shrek,A.I.and atlantis.

Aside from atlantis being copied off of the anime "nadia" (lots of websites on that...) some of you may or may not have noticed the multitude of NON-disney animated features that the movie also ripped off.

-Mole is similar in shape and voice to titan A.E.`s far more likeable "Gune",and when we first meet mole,he grabs the main character`s arm and pulls on it to examine his hand in a near mirror-image of one of Gune`s first scenes (during which he is also talking very fast, again, like Gune)

-The city of atlantis is EXTREMELY similar in overall design to the city in "the road to el dorado" complete with glowing symbols, exotic wildlife, and statues coming to life.

-The statues that rise to protect atlantis looked like (and were animated similar to) the iron giant, just with a few extra details to give them an "ancient" appearance.
