    "No More Cheapquels"

    Like This Thread!
    www.animated-movies.com:

Brian Mitchell, a professional animator who has worked on Disney, Warner and Bluth feature, is "appalled by what the Disney company is doing to their Classic films. I am very worried about the future of the Disney company as Eisner drags it down a little at a time without little or any visible opposition. Well, I decided to do something about it. In response to the current situation with the 'Load of Cheap Sequels' (Cinderella 2 and Hunchback 2 lead the list) that Disney is producing, I put up a 'No More Cheapquels!' sweat shirt up on line for those who are sick of the endless dreck that a certain company has been and will be churning out." If you agree with Brian's point of view, help him get the word out and pass this link along! The link is:

Sweet! Unfortunately Disney has become the tyrant of the animation industry - stripping its classics of it's precious gold and refining it into lead - movies that don't seem to offer anything to its viewers over the age of two. While there have been some that I've liked - Lion King 2, Return of Jafar, King of Thieves and even Pocahontas 2 (I got it free in the mail, so sue me - and yes I am the one person in the world that thought this film was decent ). Overall though a lot of them have just gotten lost in the shuffle - did Cinderella need a second movie? Or Hunchback? I say thee nay!

Hopefully this will show Disney that their viewers really do matter - but then again I don't expect the green beast of destruction to bow to the petty pleas of their consumers. As long as the keep getting feed green and stay out of the red - we'll continue to see these mockeries loong into the future.

What the Disney company is doing is wrong. Everyone will associate the classic films with these poor sequels, and then the original ones will be forgotten by some people. They don't care. They just want money.

I think there are some people over the age of 2 who will watch these "new" movies.

Maybe this will get the message to those executives at Disney, though I doubt it.

Kudos to that guy! I would so wear that sweater. It really is a shame what's been happening with Disney all of a sudden. I love Disney, I mean, I've been raised on it, and have gone to Disneyland since I was a year old. It's just ingrained in me. Their classic movies are just really awesome, take Beauty and the Beast for example (my fav), the animation was incredible, and the music so awesome. And it just sickens me to see all this crap coming to video and know that it's Disney whose doing it and that they are so messing up some really awesome old movies by tagging on sequels. We certainly need to get rid of the cheapquels.

I always wondered why the people under Eisner stayed so quiet...apparently they don't have to..

With these cheap ass cheapquels it is going to be harder to convince people that animation is not just for kids.

The perception is that having announced more of these has helped Disney's stock price partially recover. Because it guarantees quick profit and little investment. It won't stop unless it stops making profit and/or scares off potential stockholders. Moneywise, it's as sure a thing as possible.... Artisically, no. The risk is the quality of the brand and the possibility that it loses power and profitability. THAT's what needs to be said, more than anything else.

    The potboiler theory

Often a writer will knock off several quick, cheap, inferior stories to keep the income rolling in while working on some infinitely better, grander-scope project. Hopefully the cheapquels are just that and not The Mouse's big plan....

Would Disney/ABC's troubles all of the sudden have something to do with all these movies? I mean honestly, Hunchback II ain't flying off the shelves at any store I've been to, neither have the other ones that have recently come out. Those movies just sitting there can't be helping them right now...

You know what's worse that those Cheapqules? The cheap knock-offs from smaller companies. The only good thing I could say about these abominations is that despite how below average they are to the theatrical movies, they cost more, and look better than Hanna-Barbera, DIC, or Filmation stuff from the "Let 'em eat cake" period of animation. (which i would assume costs alot less to produce than the cheapqules, but it still costs money to make these characters move at all.) I've always like the efforts from Disney TV animation, (Their outlet in Australia comes close to nailing the stuff that they do in Burbank.) but these cheapqules ruin the reputation the've earned throughout the mid 80's, and 90's. I'm not saying that all of Disney TV's efforts are bad, It's just that alot of good talent is being wasted on crappy ideas now. Not only do we need a "No More Cheapqules" T-shirt campaign, we also need a "No More Zoog Disney" T-shirt campaign as well. Heck I'd buy that for a dollar!
