Money. Plain and simple. It costs $10 million to make these DTVs/sequels and they go to gross about $150 - 200 million. That's all Disney cares about, so be damned to any characters they own title to.
I was just reading the story about how they're going to give the CGI treatment to Bambi and Dumbo 2, and I am not pleased. Somebody needs to go over to their marketing people and tell them that they aren't suppouse to stinking touch the classics of ANImATiOn!!!
I mean 1dt it was the extreamly mediocre Lion King and Pochahontas 2 (notice I won't go after Return of Jafar which was actually okay) and now even Cinderella!?!? Cinderella is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential animated movies in the WORLD, what could possess them to want to go and just throw it around like a rag doll, to my knowledge these new direct to video movies aren't all that succesful (honestly who hear honestly still hears about Simba's pride or Jouerny to a new world, or whatever the heck the 3rd Aladdin movie was named?) So tell me please, why are they doing this???

You're confusing my poor little mind, they really make that much off of those things? Here I thought that the things where cast into oblivion after they where out for about a month???
You can make a tonne of money off these VHS/DVD releases. The Lion King 2: Simba's Return made close to $300 million in video sales. These videos stay on the market for a long time, so they never really stop making money. Disney realizes this and just keeps chruning these things out...repeatedly...

Maybe they are trying to make back money lost on actual good movies like Atlantis and Emperor's New Groove.
Speaking of which, I'm surprised they haven't anounced a sequel to Emporer's New Groove. I've heard rumors that Disney may pursue it (how, I dunno) but I'm surprised they let a property sit for that long without sequel talk. There's already a sequel in development for Lilo & Stitch for crying out loud!

It's really just sickeneing. I mean, I just saw the previews for Hunchback 2 and I just about wanted to die. Disney how so gone beyodn greedy when it comes to making money now. That, and their ideas must really suck that this is the only way they can think of to make a good profit...that, and they're probably just too lazy to do anything else.

leaf on the wind...
Well, I must say. After Atlantis, I think the sad fact is that Disney is running out of ideas. The "Groove" was an extremely good movie because it was original, and tried to entertain. So much of that is lacking in today's movies. However, Disney never fails to throw out another waste of money like Simba's Pride, Return to Neverland, and Pocahontas 2 in between their good movies. And what makes it worse is that some of these retreads are now starting to be shown in theaters!
I give Disney (well, make that Pixar) full marks for Toy Story 2. That was a good move, because it was based on a recent success and an expandable concept. But classic animation can't be treated that way. When they lived happily ever after, they lived happily ever after already! And someone at Disney should realize that, otherwise we might be seeing Snow White 2. (shudder)
BTW, just as a side note. Has anyone on this board ever seen Song of the South? Just curious.
Never seen more than song clips from Song of the South... That said....
The sequels make lotsa money, point 1. Point 2: The resources, profits and losses from DTV and the feature department that produces originals aren't traded back and forth. Not any more than the folks at Miramax give money or sales ideas to ailing Disney stores. point 3: Disney is releasing a movie based on the Country Bears attraction this summer, with Pirates and Haunted Mansion scripts in various stages. So far, I've not been encouraged (I don't want to see a ghost play therapist to a negilent dad) by the word online. So running out of ideas it could be. Maybe they'll make a Splash Mt. movie/aka the PC Song of the South.![]()
there is a Snow White 2 coming :P

I have. But that was years ago, in a theater. Useless fact: The tar baby story Remus tells actually has its roots in an African folktale, with a mischevious character called Spider and a beeswax-covered scarecrow.luckybob1985:

A ghost counseling a negligent dad? Isn't that rather similar to the anime Yu Yu Hashenko, except with the resurrection angle and the alkie mother added?
This might be a bit controversial, but I have seen Song of the South here in Europe, and I think Disney should re-release it. Honestly, I don't think that Disney meant to be insulting or anything. Just the story itself is a good story with a good moral. But, that's my two cents.
I think it's time Donald took control. Mickey simply has currupted his creator's company.
Don't tell me it's not true - I've seen Mickey at Disney World, laughing in front of his big mighty castle. He's laughing at us I tell you! Laughing!
I hear that he has got into vices and needs to pay for the habit and he doesn't care if it's Arial, Pooh or the Lion King which brings him the dough....
Donald's been kept in back alleys at Disneyworld - I've seen him signing autographs on the sly, knowing his fate if caught by his 'master'. He is our only hope.
'Help me, Donald Duck, you our only hope...'

No, it sounds like Jack Frost (the family movie) meets Casper, knowing Disney's live action family film department.Originally posted by DR. BELCH

Tell me the reason why they can't make a Gargoyles direct to video movie then? What ever happened to that rumored new series that someone wanted to make?
Nevermind, they ruined the series anyway.
If Donald hired someone to take down the mouse, it would be pandamonium, a cival war in the magic kingdom.
What's more, I bet Disney would manage to charge to see the battle. Stay at the Contempory Resort and watch the battle for Magic Kingdom from your balcony.Originally posted by I.R Joey
