Atlantis: Good or bad or inbetween?

for those of you who've seen it, what did you think of it. I for one LOVED it. The animation was by far the best i've seen in a long time, absolutely beautiful. on a purely asthetic level (and i hope you artists here will back me up) i think atlantis is worth the movie ticket.

aside from the great animation, i loved the characters and the story. sure, the secondary characters were all stereotypical minorities, but they did try and develop them nicely into their own characters. but there are some things i just take as a given with disney films, and the stereotype thing and formulated stories are things i've just gotten over. but like i said, atleast they were all used in the film, not just there to represent a minority. each had a cool role. As far as the action, it was great. and the whole movie really tried to stray away from alot of stuff disney usually gets #### about. i think that was great and comendable. they presented alot of non western ways of tought, actually made the bad guy be a capitalist with a capital C (ironic, being this is disney we're talking about), and ofcourse the animation was very anime influence. geez, what a lousy review i'm writting, but i'm tired and hungry. but i really loved it, its now my favorite (or one of) disney movie. anyway, what are some of your opinions. lets here them, cause this movie is a big deal for the animation industry, in my opinion. peace.

Spectacular movie for Disney. Animation was top notch and the story wasn't half bad either. My two problems. The villains were too easily predictable. As soon as I saw the blond evil chick it was obvious she was evil. And the main bad guy's first line? Enriching. Its leaps and bounds above other Disney cartoons but it still seems like its targeting younger viewers. Mask of the Phantasm still stands out because "adult" viewers can't predict the plot like they can in Disney movies. Some characters like the mole guy were totally for comic relief. The best disney animation? Still Gargoyles. Great soundtrack, animation, plot, character development. A new twist on Shakespeare as well. Why didn't we ever get a theatrical Gargoyles movie???

we never got an theatrical gargoyles movie because it is actually too complexed for most kids and in classic disney fashion, they ruined it with the 3rd season of gargoyles. they completely changed the crew that were involved with the first two seasons. i also think that they didn't market the show good enough. when it showed, it aired on fridays and later 4 times a week. if they moved it to saturday mornings, ratings would have a lot better.

There was actually talk of doing a live-action Gargoyles movie (with just Goliath), but that was loooooooooong ago and I imagine that the project is long dead.

i loved gargoyles too, but what about atlantis? i mean, are people that uninterested in this movie?? nobody answered mad hatter's post, and now the people who answer mine are talking about gargoyles. i personally loved this movie, but since nobody's interested in it, i'd like to know why? what did you all not like about it or why do you not want to see it, or are you just not interested either way?

I think the problem is that Gargoyles did it so much better. Diversity, "Period Action", Characterization... Atlantis wasn't anywhere close to being bad but it wasn't anything new. I kept thinking of the technology/budget/etc. being used on Gargoyles...

Anyway, the last thing I heard about a live action gargoyles movie is here. Including a review of the ID4 hack's script and a mention of development from less than a year ago....:

G.D.! I haven't heard a critic crucify a project or director since Siskel and Ebert's review of Rob Reiner's North! Dean Devlin isn't shown a scrap of mercy. Fav line: "Watch those Italian loafers, I'm going to vomit."
I haven't seen Atlantis yet, although I''m interested in it because it may herald the age of "grown-up" movies from the Mouse...plus Don "Father Guido Sarducci" Novello is in it, and that guy's a hoot-point-five. What gets me is their ad that pops up whenever I go into Yahoo TV...it shows an androgynous, knit cap-wearing, dark-complexioned figure with short black locks and a mischevious red-lipped smile. Is that a little boy or a woman dressed as one?

Atlantis was generally still a kid's action/adventure, minus the Disney trappings. But it could hardly be seen as 'grown up.' This movie is the kind of stuff you read in the ages 7-12 kid's section in the library.

Gargoyles was great in that it used its deep historical wealth to great effect, and because of this, it was one of the most ambitious animated shows ever aired. IMO, when it was mining the past, it shined. OTOH, I felt that the modern-day 'crimefighter' episodes were too much like a poor man's Batman. Medieval Scotland was where it was really at.

Atlantis was decent, better than Titan AE in my opinion (Probably do to its more original plot). Atlantis lacked more "grown up" thing though, like real character development. You never actually learned much about any of the characters. I wasn't that impressed with the animation either though, some of the backdrops they used looked too much like a painting and hardly matched the foreground.

One thing I loved was the music/sound effects, top notch!

I think the whole "good crew introduces themselves" scene around the campfire was weak. Better to use the story to give insight into the characters rather than stopping to hear the movie pitch of everyone's life.
