Atlantis the lost empire opened on Friday, I saw it the day after. Here are some of my thoughts.

    Art:

First of all the art direction seemed kinda funky IMo compared to some of the other things Disney has made. Less detail in their faces and muscles, were more boxy,(almost Bruce Timmsish) and angular. I must say though that the CGI blended pretty nicely with the hand drawn stuff, very fluid stuff. The mechanical stuff looked pretty cool, the Leviathin (which I think is a refrence to the account of the creature in the Bible, the book of Job chapeter 41.)
Wasn't completly Biblically acurate but dang was it cool.

    Storyline:

Interesting how they connected all of these legends together, even mentioning the great waters receding (which I assume was a refrence to the various global flood legends from around the world.) As for the plot details eh a little to new age for me (the whole merge with the sentient all powerful life force crystal and all), and I am convinced that they where trying very hard to draw parallels to the Bible (Kida walking on water, refrences to Babel, and I swear when the captian kidnapped and locked Kida up in the contained I thought it was gonna be some freakish take on the resurection.) Anyay, maybe Disney was snubbing its nose at the various religous organizations that have come down hard on its cartoons.

    Charecters:

    I loved these guys.

Milo: The nerdy guy who everyone thinks is a hack. He gets his reward though (gets to marry Princess Kida, hey can't argue with that)

Princess Kida: She was pretty cute actually...very cute (and dressed pretty risque even by Disney standards.) The part where she merged with the crystal and its power, may have been a little far fetched for the kids, but you know. Having her kiss Milo would have been a nice touch though, they set it up perfectly but instead they had them hug. BTW nice special effects when she transformed by the way.

Vinny: This guy was cool, some of his good jokes where blown by excesive advertisment, but still funny guy. His refreance to the mechanical Leviathin. "With that I've had white wine." LOL.

Mole: I guess you couldn't completly escape the wacky animal thing could you Disney. Mole is basically the animal that comes along for the comic relief. That part where he speaks Frnch in Kida's ear, and then she socks him was awesome.

Smokey old lady: Gee she was a chain smoker, but I love the line.
    "We're all gonna die."

The Captian: K who didn't think this guy was gonna turn on them? I saw it from the very first scene with him. He was basically a clone of Clayton (from Tarzan.) His death though was very ugly, I mean he got his wrist split and he like merged with the Crystal or something .

His assistant: She was a vixian that first scene with Milo in his dimly lighted apartment was kinda excesively eh...let's move on .

Anyway I'd give the movie like a 7.5/10, I liked it alot, but you know wasn't as good as it could have been.

...and for the "Lyin' King" fans (remember the suits at Disney said they'd never heard of Simba, the White Lion).

Yeah but the one they mentioned in the Bible (which in turn Milo refrenced) didn't really look like that.

    Question about "Atlantis"...

This is my first time posting here, but I've been reading through a lot of the posts, and I noticed people seem to have a sharp distaste for "Atlantis: THe Lost Empire." Are you all seeing somehting other than what I'm seeing, because I thought "Atlantis" was an incredible film. Why does it get such a bad reputation here?

I honestly don't know why the film isn't as loved as other features.

Maybe it's because of the maturity of the material compared to earlier Disney films, but it's a mystery to me, as well.
I feel that a big problem with today's society is that we don't listen to our fellow man -- especially when I'm talking.

I really liked Atlantis, but I think I might be biased in regards to certain areas. For one, I tend to enjoy animated films that have a Sci-Fi theme to them. I've also always been intrigued by the whole story/myth of Atlantis so having an animted film about it is great no matter what. The more mature theme was also a plus.

On the negative side though, I thought the story borrowed too much from Stargate in it's opening sequence...Milo presenting his info and then being contacted about taking on the mission to an undiscovered world or so to speak...Stargate opens the exact same way. Also, I felt that the story started out too quickly with the ocean battle vs the giant crab/lobster/metal/guardian of the entrance to Atlantis. Because right after that exciting battle, the movie slows down a GREAT deal as they travel through the caves. I would have preferred to see the film BUILD to the final exciting sequence as opposed to having one upfront and then another one at the end.

    Overall though, I think it's a solid 7.5/8 out of 10 movie.

Atlantis kinda builds in waves, wit hpeaks at particular points:

    The Leviathin fight
    The "fireflies"
The betrayal/ takeover/ crystal transforming thing
    The battle
    And the rescue.

It's not like most animated films, where there's a clear-cut (intro-build-climax-resolution) Atlantis's plot curve is a little more bumpy, like a live-action film would do...

...haven't seen Stargate, but my boy told me the same thing. Shoot, theres one action shot in Atlantis that came directly from another modern Disney animated movie (anyone care to guess which one)! I'd be more worried about that.

...in my opinion, the story takes just enough time to get started (a few seconds more, and I woulda gotten antsy), cuz in a film like Atlantis, I expect to see action! It's like what Steve Harvey said about "Titanic:" "We all know what's gonna happen; g**damn it, bring on the water!"

...question...were the "Iron Giant" sentinels created as a tribute to Brad Bird (that's what I'm thinking), or was it just a peculiar (and I do mean peculiar) coinkidink?

It seemed to go the predictable route for me. I kinda liked it and got into it until it seemed to stall somewhere near the beginning of the middle. The two main characters interaction was boring, bad guy acts over the top bad, his people all have enormous soft spots the size of Cleaveland for hearts, the fate of the king, it turns into a huge maniacal plot... Helga was the only character I liked and we know what happened to her. Taking it at face value, this should've been a movie I liked. This one, like Titan A.E., I just couldn't immerse myself in. It felt like it needed to go into one direction (more for kids) or the other (more for the older set) and it just kept tugging in both ways and couldn't make up its mind. I know there are movies that can successfully target a wide demographic but this just felt like a half-hearted attempt. I'm wondering if I would feel differently about it if we had gotten those extra scenes and a little added polish.

Atlantis was a good movie. The pacing was perhaps too fast but the basic story and character designs were great. It deserved better then what it got that's for sure.

I just saw it and besides a few gripes I enjoyed this movie a whole lot, if ound it very interesting. I remember when this movie was about to come out when they were hyping it it looked interesting, i never saw it though and then didn't find it interesting so never bothered to watch it, which i'm glad i did.

I'm kind of curious to see the "sequel" which from amazon reviews its not really another movie just the few episodes of the tv show that never came to be "sown" together, so i think it will be enjoyable.

This movie definately deserves a lot of attention.
