    Disney Sequels....why?!

    Like This Thread!
Okay, The Little Mermaid 2 I could deal with...it wasn't totally a waste of time....and now they have Peter Pan 2 coming....okay, I think I might be able to deal with that too....but a Snow White 2? Come on people! Are the writers at Disney just at the very bottom of the barrel or something that they have to go and make a sequel for every single old classic Disney movie? And every movie has a little girl who is the child of the hero's from the original movie. They are certainly fixed on girls it seems. Disney must really be low on creativity to resort to this, it's getting very old very fast. Are they trying to ruin themselves?

Barb, dear, this is the same studio that is giving us "Snow Dogs". I don't think they're really trying anymore. All of the creative guys (and girls) moved over to Pixar, for the most part.
That's all right, though. Now I can look a boycotting Southern Baptist in the eye and say that I don't watch Disney films...

Seriously, right now, with family films making a comeback and the black eyes the Mouse House has gotten over the past few years with some rather questionable ideas (and you though FOX Family was bad...), Eisner, et al, see these sequels as the quickest way into people's pocketbooks... er... HEARTS! Yeah, hearts...

Unfortunately for all involved, Disney is ripping the hearts out of real animation fans, the main ones who kept them afloat for so long, because they desperately need dinero... now. Even if no one sees this dreck in the theaters, they'll probably make back their 5-and-dime animation budgets back on the video release, and on Disney Channel, and Toon Disney, and ABC, and ABC Family... getting the picture yet?

It doesn't matter to Disney execs if the material's any good. They just need stuff to fill their catalogs and TV Channels.

And sequels are the easiest way to do that.

It certainly cheapens the classics by making sequels of them, doesn't it? Oh well. It's their grave. You won't see me crying over it.

I'd rather they just release the rest of the Ghibli films. I just want to see the dad blamed things in some form or another.

You know, it's funny. Just today, we were at a local mall and I decided to hit the book store (the kind where no one gives a damn if you read the books and you can order a latte' and stuff in). Two rather hefty books caught my eye- The New Way Thing Work, and another one where the title escapes me-something about 'Before the animation' or something.

It was a Disney book, focusing on all the different Disney artists' sketches and preliminary ideas for movies and Silly Symphonies and the like, from as old as Snow White to slightly more recent works like Mulan and Hercules.

In EVERY SINGLE sketch, painting, character sheet, storyboard and plain ol' doodle, you can clearly tell the works were done with heart, with love. Even the simplest of sketches showed a feeling of dedication to trying to bring that idea to life. It's almost laughable to see that these fine folks work (or worked) at the animation company that's bringing us all those horid DTV sequels. It's the kind of thing to expect from a bootleg indy company that creates a horrid variation of another film months after it first premiered (like what the Carnosaur movies are to the Jurrasic Park films).

The book made me sketch again, everything from toony anthropomorphic drawers to odd yet adorable Americanized espression drawings of Basiliskmon, a fanmade Digimon of mine(bear with me-I was watching the Digi-Bowl this morning)!

For being a fountain of knowledge for me as a cartoonist, I give great thanks to Disney for. For those fine movies of the past as well as their earlier shorter works that filled me with joy as a child, I give thanks to as well.

For going back on everything that the Mouse's creator and his friends and families worked hard to create, a great pang of guilt and unhappiness do I wish on those people. Thanks alot, Ron and Co.

What you think is Love, could it not be just Lust?
Has your want for Friendship ever been blinded by your Wrath?
Does your thirst for Knowledge ever get tainted by Greed?
Does your sense of Reliability ever come short and become Sloth?
Is it truly Sincerity...or merely Envy?
Is it truly Hope that you seek or are you just a victim of Gluttony?

    Where are your Savers...?

Someone forgot Lion King 2. And I heard there is going to be a sequel to the Hunchback of Notre Dame. All straight to video crap without imagination.

I don't really like some Disney movies of late, but the exception for me has always been "The Emperor's New Groove" -- it's totally funny and different from the usual epics (or films that "look" like epics) Disney tries to create.

    Why they are made.

The sequels are made by because people keep buying them. If people stop buying them and then they will stop.

Clueless parents and curious kids buy them. People should just rent the titles; and see what obvious tripe they sometimes can be.

Back in the day Disney use to be great. I mean, even if they make crappy movies now, they really knew what they were doing back then. The animation was great, and so were the stories. If they're making a Hunchback of NotreDame sequel, I might have to go over to the studio's and take them out of their misery....

I wouldn't say all of them were great. Though Disney would have people believe that all of their animated movies are classics and their older ones SUPER-CLASSICs, after giving a couple of them a few viewings and comparing them to one another, many of them still didn't have much innovation from one to the other. I tend to think a few are vastly overrated from a storytelling and thematic standpoint.

However, the animation and artistry has always been their best asset. Disney artists clearly care about their work, and the main strengths found in the older films are due to the unique variety of art and animation styles brought to us by the nine old men.

The Emperor's New Groove was an incredibly awesome movie! The best part is when Kronk wakes up in the middle of the night (with his teddy bear) and realizes that the peasant... at the diner... ... he didn't pay his check.

Yea and the squirrel was great.

I kinda started to lose faith in Disney movies when they released Pocahontas 2.

I hear you, man. Everyday Disney is becoming a shadow of it's former self. The Emperor's New Groove, and Atlantis are the only films that have any redeeming value. This sequle stuff is driving me crazy! If the realy wanted to make a good sequle, they could've adapted The Black Cauldron more faithfuly, and told the whole story in the form of a trilogy. (Ala Lord Of The Rings) They've got all the talent, yet the're wasting it on crappy ideas. Here's hoping that Lilo & Stitch, and Treasure Planet are their last hope of Redemption. In the meantime, I'm waiting for them to release DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, and Especialy Gargoyles on DVD. Anybody know of some petitions for these shows where i can sign up? Please let me know.

Disney videos did so well in the foreign, specifically the Asian, markets that Disney decided to test its merits. They released Return of Jafar several years ago and it was a phenomenal success. Using substandard feature animation and secondary personel they were able to make millions without the hassle of distribution. Think about it you're an executive something like this is a success. What do you do? Repeat the cycle. This is kind of a shame, many of the movies with the exception of a few deserve a well-budgeted big screen sequal, or maybe even their own series. Who wouldn't want to see the Continuing adventures of the great Mouse Detective, or a roger rabbit series instead of Bonkers. The Disney afternoon has remained dormant in weekday mourning sydication, bring it back on UPN stations in the afternoon. Fox Kids is gone in afternoons, the void must be filled or WB's monopoly will be complete. As for the sequals, I abhor lack of effort or creativity on anyone's part. I mean the reason the original Disney charcacters such as Donald and Mickey stood the test of time is because they weren't marketed this badly, they're mystique and freshness is still constant. I wish I could say the same for Aladdin and Pocohontas. Just look at the House of Mouse, who do you honestly respect more on that series and why ?

Mickey, Donald, Goofy and the rest of the shorts characters. They're the ones this show is about. The movie characters are just...there, usually spouting one-liners and such.

I really, really hope that there is no sequel to The Emperor's New Groove. That movie, one of Disney's best in years - since Aladdin, stand son it's own and doesn't deserve a sequel. It doesn't need it! Not at all! No way! Disney has been digging it'self into a hole, and they're digging deeper with Peter Pan 2. Why deeper you ask? Becuase no doubt if this sequel does well in theatres, then we're gonna see more sequels to "classic" movies in theatres, instead of on video. It's begun, folks. Dinsye thinks that returning old characters to the screen will bring about more money. Unfortauntly...it just might work...

I never saw Atlantis, which I've been meaning to, but I never got the impression that it was a fantastic movie. Emperor's New Groove, is a whole other story. I loved that movie, in fact, I could ask any random kid at school and they've probably seen it. Everyone seems to love it, especially the squirrel talk and the "no touchy!" line. It was just great! But, as they years go by, the odds of Disney making a truly great movie like they use to, is slim to none. When you look at the movies from a while back, like Beauty and the Beast, or Sleeping Beauty, to the movies they're making now....something is definetly missing. Hopefully they're pull away from this sequel craze, doubtful, and get back on track, if that's at all possible.
