I've tried to source why there episode 11 isn't included on DVD, but most places only mention that the episode is legally tied up. I just want to know exactly why.
I should put something here. I don't know what though.
Very few people know (BVHV employees, the staff at TVShowsOnDVD, etc.) and they're not talking. During legal problems, airing dirty laundry publicly doesn't usually speed things along, so I don't blame anyone for keeping quite as long as it might result in the episode being released with season two or three.Originally Posted by Vermunium
I do appreciate that Disney is being upfront about the situation. The back of the DVD box actually specifically says that episode 11 is not included.
I do as well. Though, unlike music replacements and syndicated cuts, an entire missing episode would without a doubt be false advertising if they had failed to note the missing episode and still called it season one. So, while I appreciate their honesty, they really didn't have much of a choice.Originally Posted by William C. Maune
I didn't know it was that bad. I thought it might have been because of some simple reason, but I guess everything isn't simple. I might just pick this up soon. I just find it a little weird, I usually can find out the reasoning. Not this time though.Originally Posted by Dogbert

Something about Cindy Crawford being a **** and not liking her portrayal.
That's preposterous. It's based on two assumptions: 1) Cindy Crawford is a huge jerk and 2) Disney isn't smart enough to know the character in the episode is protected by parody laws. If that isn't enough, there's also the fact that the episode still airs (which it wouldn't if that was the reason) and that TVShowsOnDVD has confirmed that is not the reason (they won't say what it is, just that it's not that).Originally Posted by GregX
I have a question: Ultimate Disney's new review of The Tick Set implies that some of the earlier episodes on this set have been edited (Some episodes are shorter than others by up to two minutes). Are the affected episodes actually edited?
EDIT (no pun intended): The review in question says that episodes 2, 4, and 5, are two minutes shorter than normal, while episodes 1 and 6 are one minute shorter, and Episode 3 is 40 seconds longer
Zim: "I thought the Tallest killed you."
Skoodge "Yeah, but I'm all right now."
Mad Jack the Pirate: "You were DEAD! How do you get better from being DEAD, you Scottish twit?!??"
Someone will need to compare the original runs with these to find out for certain. Many of the shows on Fox Kids at that time had no standard run time. Some, maybe The Tick as well, had general run times that most episodes were near, but didn't always fit that amount. Given that the third episode is longer, I'd say that's probably the reason.Originally Posted by Super Leviathan
Plus, I can't believe they'd edit the DVDs more so than the show. And, there's only one edit on the TD versions that I know about.
Howdy,
I've been on vacation since the review was posted, but the review itself might contain a clue as to who the legal rights for "The Tick vs. the Mole Men" are tied up with, in the section about the flaws of the set and the episode itself.Originally Posted by Vermunium
But you didn't hear it from me. In fact, I don't even know what you're talking about. Who gave you this number?
Ahem. I do, however, have it on good authority that the rights issue is being actively worked on and Disney is really truly going to try to include it on one of the future sets.
I will say that it is definitely NOT being caused by Cindy Crawford. As far as I can tell, that is pure Internet-fabricated rumor/muckracking that has NO foundation in reality, and should be quashed wherever and whenever the rumor appears. It is completely not true, and I'm kind of shocked and appalled that some news outlets are advancing the story, even as an unsourced rumor.
And I was going to title the review or the splash, "The one review of The Tick that doesn't incorporate his battle cry" but it didn't fit.

Despite the lack of any extras, I still think The Tick Versus Season One is a very worthy addition to any fan’s DVD collection. The audio and video are pretty good given the source material, and the disc themselves are well handled. I do find it odd that while there are eight episodes on the first disc, there are only four episodes on the second. Buena Vista has a history of doing some really lopsided multi-disc sets. I remember their 2005 Fantastic Four: The Complete Series set also had a similar set up in episode division.
Regardless, this series is as fun as I remember it. Offbeat, bizarre, and just plain out there, I’m surprised how this series remains relevant even today with the big “Superhero Boom” in Hollywood right now. It hits all the right notes, as far as I’m concerned. Some episodes are weaker than others, but the series kicks off great and is able to retain its’ zany humor for the entire twelve episode collection. And with news that the episode dropped from this set will be included in the next (or future) release, it’s refreshing to know we will not be getting an incomplete set. Besides, how can you not dig The Tick’s battle cry of “SPOON!”
It would have been nice to get some extras outside of a few trailers and a lithograph, but I’m happy with the collection. Hopefully in the future we’ll receive some nice extras to round out the package, but The Tick Versus Season One comes Highly Recommend.

I've really been enjoying this. The Tick's lines are still as great and the animation is still as cheesy as I remember. I was cracking up when the Tick started talking about "the other head of science." And this cartoon is very witty, actually, in some episodes, like when Dot says "Dad really messed you up, didn't he," to Arthur in Tick Vs. Dinosaur Neil.
It's interesting that the picture quality varies so much between episodes. Some are very clear and others are noticeably more muddy.
I liked that Bipolar Bear is back. That was the only cut I was aware of from the Toon Disney episodes. There's still a weird scene in the first episode where the Tick suddenly has a flaming desk, but I'm starting to think that's the way it originally aired.
As for the legal controversy, Marvel does not own the concept of Mole Men, and the Tick's Mole Men look nothing like Marvel's. Maybe there's another reason, but if that's it then it's kind of silly. Hopefully they can work it out in time to put it on the next season.
Finally, they can call it a "lithograph" all they want, but it's just a postcard.
And stay out of Riverdale!
I forgot to post this earlier, but extras I would like to see in any future additions are, of course, Ben Edlund commentary, and a featurette about how the Tick was created as a comic book, I think it actually started in a NEC newsletter, and became a cartoon and then live-action show.
And stay out of Riverdale!
finally! I've been waiting for The Tick to come out on DvD! Its About time!
