Does the series explain why Elyon is the "rightful" ruler rather than Phobos? In most monarchies, the eldest child is the heir. Does Meridian have different inheritance laws?

Your last question is the right one! The throne inheritance goes by the female bloodline.

Phobos only took the throne because Elyon was a baby when their parents disappeared (or died, personally I keep Phobos responsible, but a clear answer will never come). Short after that she was brought to Earth with three fugitives, namely her nurse Galgheita and captain Miriadel with commander Alborn. Since she's at age Phobos demanded Cedric to get her back, because he only can reach his goal by her coronation.
