I'm coming out of the closet...

    Like This Thread!
As a Recess fan. I know alot of you seem to really hate this show with a passion. But I think it had moments when it was incredibly funny at point. I mean it had commentary on politics played out with grade school kids. Come on now even the critics have to tip their hats to an episode like El Diablo right? So come on Recess fans let your voice be heard.

Oh yeah and I kinda liked Pepper Ann too so there....

Wait till you see the upcoming Recess/ Lilo & Stitch cross-over episode.

    ...and I'm not joking...

I don't know if it's been announced yet, but I know Disney's been working on at least 3 Lilo & Stitch crossover episodes, using KP, Jake Long, and Recess.

The weirdest thing is that they don't change the designs on the 'visiting characters' at all!

I enjoy Recess for that element, too. It portrays the schoolyard as so many things: Prison; a king deciding the fate of his subjects; life-or-death games; and that's what I like about it. The kindergarteners are portrayed as savages, which is funny because they can't read yet. And don't forget the multiple Ashleys, years before The Oblongs with the multiple Debbys.

I still love the episode where the group wants to find out what REALLY goes on in the teacher's lounge. Very Rugrats (circa 1992-1994) in its humor and pacing. Or the one where Finster has to stay inside a "time out" square and snaps within minutes, just like a prisoner would if he were put inside The Box. Great stuff.

I bang my head in disbelief whenever I hear someone bash the Recess kids for being too lame or PC or cliche, but when I hear that stuff I just say well come on over to NY and go to elementary/middle school. It looks exactly like what you see on Recess even down to the old crabby lady in flowery..ish dresses. I grew up in that recess world, 30 minutes of freedom, 30 minutes of real life..sort-of, same as this show. You have the nerds, the prudish posh grrrls, the tough bully kids, the popular one...darnit this show included ever single person you could meet during those crazy days back in school. Nostalgia baby! I guess what I'm trying to say is this show ROCKS. But it's hated and I understand that people hate stuff that ROCKS sometimes.

Give it a chance if all you've heard are bad things. It's not a bad show IMO. Some episodes are boring, but no more so than most of the lame doug episodes. When UPN ran this show everyday, I enjoyed each one. One episode that stands out is the one where all the kids have to stay inside because it's raining outside. It's like thx1138 in a way, or 1984 if you will. Ok I'm done, but give recess a chance. Congradulations I.R Joey.

    The Problem with Recess..

Actually I am sort of like you IR, I kind of like recess but I see some major flaws here with the show.. first off the Opening Music..(Sounds a Little bit too much like Hogan's Heros and the opening scenes make it seem like School is a bit like Stalag 13..

But there are those Moments that do make the cut.. (One of course you mentioned IR is Dodge Ball City (The El Diablo story) and in fact that one definitely pays hommage to Clint Eastwood (Seeing Gus Griswald Taking out 5th graders faster then Clint is a Hoot and a Holler!)

but like I say It's a good show but there is indeed a bit too much PC and Cliche in there..(But again some episodes are good, while others are not..(King Gus I praticularly didn't like due to it's "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely"Theme.) also the episode with "The Box" (which then brings me back to Hogan's Heros and The Great Escape again..(why not put TJ Detweiler in "The Cooler" for pete's sake...)

Then of course there are the characters.. While some of the Main Cast are okay (I kind of like Spinnelli and her "Tough as Nails" Marine Corps Attitude, some of the Supporting Cast are weak.. Randall the snitch most notably..(This guy gives Snitches a bad name.. and for good reason.) and the Ashleys..(Good grief, Snooty Rich Valley Girls saying Scandalous every time.. well it's rather.. Scanalous!)

but Recess I must say does have it's moments and there are at least half a dozen to a dozen episodes (about 3 to 6 shows) I can say are okay.. The rest.. Meh..

The series is soild and stands on its own. I like seeing the seriousness they convey over such childish things. A king of the playground and their reactions to some of the punishments are just a few things that give us an idea its a more grown up show done in the guise of kiddie stuff on the playground (just like Filmore).

While I hate the stereotypical behavior of the kids, overall, I think the program is totally watchable. Can't someone watch it without loving or hating it? I watch it once in a while because it keeps my interests, the animation isn't bad, and the voice acting is well done. I find the stories to be hit or miss depending on how fast I can figure out the ending. Overall, the show is a solid better-than-average rating in my book.

Scary isn't it? I've always loved Recess. I don't really even have a reason. I just like it.

And I too liked Pepper Ann. *hides in a corner*

I agree with about all the above, its pretty good show when its good. But does have its flaws, some episodes are quite boring. And were churned out without much effort going into the story department. The them of the show is its greatest aspect in my opinion. It's very fun to watch how the roles are played out on a playground setting, but overall it was good, not great, but good.

Ah, yes, back to the beginnings of One Saturday Morning. Doug = Pepper Ann > Recess, in my opinion.

Recess was my least favorite of the three, and I rarely watched it back then. I think it had to do with the fact that I was teen and I related more to Doug and Pepper Ann. I don't think Recess is a bad series, though. Even now, when I decide to watch the occasional episode or two on Disney Channel, I find myself pleasantly enjoyed with the interactions between the main cast. Even though they are type-cast, I really like how there are episodes where they are pushed to their personality limits, i.e., to the point where they'd do something they'd not do normally. (My favorites... TJ becoming the prisoner of the kindergartners and then becoming one; Vince tired of winning all the time, so he does everything to lose all the time.)

At least I can take solace in this: Recess > any other show that premiere on One Saturday Morning after the original trio.

I bet 'people who hate Recess' = 'adults who live a bland life and don't like to have fun and at the same time don't want to admit they loved recess back when they were in school.' Hey, it's okay to act like a kid once in awhile!

On another note... L&S crossovers with KP, Jake Long, and Recess? Huh? That's completely unexpected. If it's true... well, do we dare fear the worst? Hmmm... *tries to remember the episode from the Hercules TV series that crossovers over with Aladdin... and now wishes I had Toon Disney*

I admit that when I first watched Recess, this was only after I discovered that it was made from the same crew that worked on the Classic Rugrats (1991-1994). Somehow, the show seemed to have all of the intelligence that was missing from Rugrats since 1997.

However, Recess is more like a brain without a heart, whereas the Rugrats (c. 1997) is a heart without a brain (a yin without its yang, and vice-versa). The thing I hated about Recess is that there were times where they attempted to do dramatic stories, and they came off very lame. Whenever a character said or did something (melo-)dramatic, it felt forced. The show overall felt more like kids pretending to be cartoon characters, rather than just being cartoon characters by nature.

They also tended to obscure a lot of their own concepts. There were many episodes that spoke about Beany McChimp bubble gum, or Senor Fusion comic books. But they never fully utilized them like Rugrats did with Reptar and the Dummi Bears.

I could go on about the political-correctness, and the lame movie, but that would take all day.

Nothing wrong with enjoying Recess or PA. I found both shows pretty entertaining most of the time, not excellant, but good.

I think one of the people behind Lilo & Stitch: The Series mentioned (outside of the forums) that there would be a crossover episode. Now, I've learned that three would exist. Very interesting stuff.

That's all I can ask for EinBop Seriously can't believe how many views I got just because of the title.

How could they possibly make a crossover with those shows Kzanth? They look totally diffrent (of course I like Kingdom Hearts so whatever?!?)

Yeah, but back to Recess I think it had alot of the charm that Rugrats did in its earlier days. The voice acting was usually pretty good, but the one complaint I had is the rather uninspired storyboarding/directing job. People tended to just stand around and deliver their lines, and we rarely saw alot of interesting camera angles and stuff.

The theme song is one of the best aspects of the show. It further reinforces the "escape from prison" undertone and has shades of The Great Escape. Quite hummable indeed.
