The latest home video release for Young Justice is here!
Young Justice: Season One, Volume Three
Studio: Warner Home Video
Release Date: February 21th, 2012
Synopsis:
The third volume in the animated DC Universe cartoon. Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis have become Young Justice - The Justice League's secret weapon against the forces of evil. The teen heroes will take on under-the-radar missions that would be impossible for the Justice League to handle covertly. Red Tornado will be their supervisor; Black Canary will be in charge of their training and Batman will hand out their assignments. "Young Justice" Season 1 Vol. 3 - Just Whelmed by the Show, Really Underwhelmed by the DVD
I recognize that I'm in the minority for not being totally bowled over by the show, but I've explained why in the review. Might not been enough for to placate the show's fans, but it's what I have. At least I'm sure we can all agree that these soccer mom releases suck.
Also, since I'm following this show on DVD, I have no idea what's been revealed so far or not, but:
Spoiler:
Not really looking for confirmation or validation of the above -- I just want to have that out there so I can see how right or wrong I am later as the show unfolds.

Actually I think you articulated my own problems with the show I have as well( except you probably wrote far more coherent than I ever could ). It's a good show and I like it a lot and see every episode but I don't love it and I think I finally got hooked around the same time you did Ed, although I think mine was Infiltrator.
I bought the first volume hoping that the first two parts were in 1 like with Batman Beyond the Movie but it wasn't unfortunately. I am gonna wait for the season sets.

I don't understand what you meaan by approach Catholic approach?
Also, I do kinda understand where you're coming from. In a sense the series took a bad cue from George Lucas with no frame of reference other than what fanboys know and assume of the characters. Knowing that I just accept the show for what it is.
Ed Liu, thank you so much for that review. Your words captured perfectly the feelings I've also had for some time about Young Justice. You may be in the minority, but you're definitely not alone.
The good news is, the show has been getting really good in the most recent episodes. Also, in regards to your hunch about Red Tornado, the episode "Humanity" deals with that very question - and let me tell you, it does not disappoint.![]()
R.I.P. Batman: The Brave and the Bold - November 14, 2008 to November 18, 2011. May Beware The Batman strive to be even half as entertaining.
I'm using "catholic" (note lower-case "c") to mean "broad or wide-ranging in tastes, interests, or the like", not "Catholic" (upper-case "C") as in the religion. I mean they're all-encompassing, arguably even moreso than Justice League.

There's a quote from GregX's blog on a review of one of YJ's comics that might answer why your not bowled over by the show yet:
I actually agree with his pov on this. What this show is in need of is a sit down discussion between all 7 light members discussing why they formed "The Light" and why all 7 members are a part of this group. Perhaps we'll get this in the next 7 episodes but IMO it's long over-due.For me, the problem is that we really only get one point of view, and that's the point of view of The Team. Now, I know they're the stars, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's still the only perspective we get. On "Gargoyles," "Spectacular Spider-Man," and "W.I.T.C.H." we got to see much more of the world the characters inhabited, and the perspectives of other characters and factions. And in the case of "Gargoyles" and "W.I.T.C.H." those were also ensemble shows.
On "Young Justice," we're eighteen episodes in and the villains are still a complete mystery to us. Sure we know who the members of The Light are, but what else do we know? The answer is not much. We knew much more about the Green Goblin in "Spectacular Spider-Man" in his first appearance alone than we do about The Light this far in the game. And the Goblin's identity wouldn't even be revealed to us for another seventeen episodes. We knew a ton about Demona and Xanatos at this point in "Gargoyles" even with her background still being a mystery. By this point in "W.I.T.C.H." we knew Nerissa pretty well too.
My favorite episodes of "Young Justice" are "Humanity" and "Secrets" because they did what I feel the rest of the series is missing. "Humanity" gave us things from the perspective of T.O. Morrow and Red Volcano. "Secrets" showed us things from Harm's perspective, granted we saw it through the prism of Artemis, Zatanna, and Secret, but it was there.
Now, I recognize and understand that the single perspective is a conscious creative choice, and by the time the season is over, I'll most likely understand and appreciate why that choice was made. That is my hope, and I trust this creative team to deliver in the end. But right now, it's a creative choice that's not working for me based on my own preferences.

I saw Walmart is selling a 3 pack with all 3 volumes of Young Justice currently available for 15 bucks so anyone holding off since they're singles may want to pick that up.

Well, Pepperidge... your avatar is essentially the answer. We don't know. WHV's Blu-Ray plans seemed to be haphazard and I think they only did DVD sets for the previous series, The Brave and The Bold. So far HD quality versions are available to buy episodes/seasons online for a $1 more usually. But I hope YJ and GL:TAS get BD treatment sooner than later.

I'm in the same minority and your review did an excellent job of showing why Young Justice is a terrifically well-made show that doesn't function as fully as one hopes. I'd also add that while I realize real-life teenagers can indeed be pouty, hormonal and self-absorbed, it's difficult to convey those traits without annoying the viewer, especially if he's an adult. That's a long-winded way of saying that I'd like to see Red Arrow thrown in a woodchipper and Superboy forced to gargle liquid kryptonite. Anyway, I think your review is judicious and gives this show a fair shake.

Who says teenagers are only capable of being pouty and/or self absorbed?Whether the viewer is annoyed also might depend on whether the viewer is thin skinned or not.
Its not like Red Arrow takes up that much screen time, or that there's nothing more to Superboy than being angry all the time. Heck he's still more interesting than Kaldur is, regardless of being angry alot.

Not sure about that, but I am sensitive about a character's actions and personality becoming monotonous.
Believe me, I'm grateful for that! Its not like Red Arrow takes up that much screen time
There is, but not much.or that there's nothing more to Superboy than being angry all the time.
Definitely agreed there. Poor Kaldur is a stiff.Heck he's still more interesting than Kaldur is

Luckily there's enough story arcs/different directions for them to go in, to keep characters from feeling THAT grounded IMO. Well most of them anyways.
Maybe I've just accepted them a little more since I feel like I understand most of them. Or that I remember how old Nygma was during his teenage years (I was worse).
I think the only time I've been annoyed by the way a teenager was portrayed (but understood it) was Wally in Failsafe, when he grieved over Artemis by mentioning her name like a dozen times. And I say this as someone who considers Kid Flash his favorite character on the show.
