    BTAS/TNBA costume material

    I've always wondered about this.

What are the costumes in the DCAU Batman shows supposed to be made from?

Because the live action films have the rubber suits that have finally come to the conclusion that they are only for the looks, and not for actual use in any kind of way.
While i'm not too much of a fan of the looks of Bale's new costume, i can certainly understand why they completely rebuilt it to be much more practical.
The costumes from the 90's films were designed to make him look as if he's a comicbook drawing come to life, but this only worked of he didn't move and just stood there the way the suit was molded, but as soon as he started lifting his arms, you could see his chest muscles fold the body out of shape.

Now, BTAS/TNBA animation style is fairly different from the comics in the sense that it's art deco style doesn't show muscle detail like the comics.

In that sense i always felt that Michael Keaton's costume in Batman Returns looks most like BTAS of all the films because it didn't have those fake rubber muscles.

But in the show, the costumes get ripped sometimes, and that kinda gives the idea that these are not rubber suits like in the movies, but more like the spandex suits from the Adam West show...

However, in TNBA the character Joel talks about "That tight rubber armor" - so, that kinda answers the question that they ARE rubber suits.

You could easily say that, because the character is so obviously based on Joel Schumacher, that the rubber suit comment is merely a nod to his Bat-nipples and butt shots, and not a technical description of the animated batsuit, but still...
The kid Joel obviously LOOKED at the suits, otherwise he wouldn't mention it, and because he mentioned it, it'd be kinda weird if he had mistaken spandex for rubber...

I've always felt that the suits in the BTAS/TNBA are like the modern diving/surfing suits.

As you can see, these suits are made of rubber, but they don't have that bulky 'block of rubber' look of the movies, and they look pretty much exactly like what you'd expect to see if the animated series was real, without it becoming like the Adam West Batsuit.

The last picture makes me feel like it would look much better as a batgirl suit then what Alicia Silverstone wore. Alicia's Batsuit made me feel like the bulky quality of the batsuits doesn't work for women like it does for men, but these diving suits would make a real Batgirl look like the animated Batgirl, without it looking silly like Yvonne Graig's spandex suit.

What do you think the animated suits are made of?

Some fictional material. Bulletproof spandex, if you will.

Nope, not bullet proof. Bullet holes were mentioned by both Barbara and Bruce in episodes of Batman Beyond.

The surfing/diving suits you posted pics of are most likely made of Neoprene. IIRC, the Batsuit from Begins Begins was composed of a Neoprene "under-suit," similar to a diving suit, with sections of latex/rubber "armor"/"muscles" attached over the "under-suit."

    Aha...

The last suit, the female one, makes me feel like it's a perfect basic for a Batgirl costume in the Nolanverse.

I always figured that, in a "Batgirl Begins" film, Barbara would start out with a selfmade suit like that, and then when she gains Batman's trust, get her "Lucious Fox" upgraded version.

I am a DCAU Batfan, and while there's entire armies of protesting fans, i'd love to see a serious Batgirl in Nolan films based on Barbara Gordon from the animated series.

...and it's basically because of this that i came up with this topic. Because i'd want a Nolan Batgirl to resemble the DCAU Batgirl, i started thinking about what you'd need to make her look like that, instead of what they did with Alicia Silverstone.

    No high heels, for one...

The live action Batgirl costume that most resembles the one Babs Gordon wore in TNBA is probably the Batgirl costume from the short-lived series "Birds of Prey" (that appeared to be a modified version of the Alicia Silverstone Batgirl suit).
