I know a lot of people will complain about this, saying they're only using Jaime since he is Mexican and the whole thing, but I really enjoy his character and the fact that he's the rare teen hero with a real and supportive family who knows his secret identity and no one is murdered to make sure he's bleak and the like. Pick up the collected editions if you see them in the store, you'll like it.
From what I read of him in IC he seems like an interesting kid. If his origins for this show are similar I wonder how it'll be handled...

I'm guessing Ted doesn't exist or is just a past legacy character and the fact that
    Spoiler:
The Beetle's scarab is bonded to his spine
isn't really violent or graphic that they could basically leave it alone.

I just hope they don't try and ethnic him up with a really obvious accent or something. That would make me more annoyed and think that is was basically a cheap demo grab.
Yup. It's a signature. Go away if you're expecting something interesting here.

I'm suddenly less enthusiastic about this series. But I'll give it a shot.

So James Tucker left LOSH for this... I wonder if it was his decision to leave that cancelled the show... I notice that some of the Teen Titans crew is working on Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

As I was hinting at earlier, the character designs for this series are heavily inspired by the artwork of Dick Sprang, classic Batman artist from the 40s and 50s. The work is stylized, the men large and lantern jawed, but it's going to look GREAT when finished.

I really like that preview artwork. If the original BTAS took a lot of its design cues from the Fleischer studios Superman cartoons, then I think this Batman is taking a lot of its cues from the Dick Sprang Batman comics. There's a healthy shot of Jack Kirby in there, too, and just a dash of that retro 50's aesthetic that drove New Frontier in comics and the DTV.

In a way, though, that may also be why I find the new Blue Beetle a bit jarring, because his costume doesn't quite match that 50's aesthetic. Not the worst thing in the world, though, since he is supposed to be a bit of the odd-man out, judging by the descriptions we've gotten so far. I'm also not against giving the new guy some props, especially since I've heard so many good things about the new series.

This is AWESOME! I referred to this as "JLU-lite" before, predicting it would continue "The Batman" series; but, lo and behold, "Brave and the Bold" has artistic integrity! Dick Sprang designs? Kirby flourishes? A four color, "Dick Tracyish" palette? I'm actually looking forward to this.

I love the idea of a Sprang-influenced Batman series myself. The first story in "Legends of the Dark Knight" is one of my favorite bits of Batman animation ever.

It sort of reminds me of The Batman's last season, what with Batman teaming up with various superheroes of note.

As for designs and animation, the execution is what counts. I miss the realistic look of the DCAU and related productions, but then again fans wanting realistic Batman will get Batman: Gotham Knight this summer.
I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know? -Bill Watterson

I like the retro designs, even if they look a little cheesy. My big beef is indeed, the common criticism that this is a Justice League reboot. Nothing will shake my belief that Justice League/JLU is one of the best, of not the best superhero cartoon of all time.

Although early, those designs are horrible, lets hope that the stories and tone of the series arent as bad. The series based on that one pic looks like its supposed to coinced with dc toy line DC SUPERFRIENDS for toddlers. Why cant they keep the designs from The Batman, and bring Ted Kord as the Beetle, scrap that design and that Jamie kid for the real Blue Beetle.

Gah: Stupid, confusing thread management tools.

I tried to merge the Talkback thread on this topic that was in the Cartoon Network Cartoons forum into this thread; accidentally merged this one into that one instead; had to rename it and move and mirror it to get things the way I wanted them; and now there are redirects all over the place. I think I've got the redirects to expire within an hour.

All because I thought it silly to have two official threads when one of them was mirrored into both forums ...

Heh, how history doth repeat. I remember four years ago when everyone here was complaining that the designs on The Batman were horrible, and why couldn't they keep the designs from Justice League and TNBA instead. (For the record, I thought, still think, and always will think The Batman one of the ugliest shows to ever come out of WBA ...)

I thought this was going to be in continuity with The Batman?
    This show looks totally different.

I have to agree. Ultimately I have to reserve judgment until the show airs to see how the stories are (after all, I was never a fan of the Spectacular Spider-Man designs, but the show is blowing my hatred of those away with sheer quality writing and animation quality) but based on these designs, I'm much less excited now. I thought this was going to be much more based on what The Batman was already doing in its final season, and I've always loved The Batman's designs (about as much as Bruce Timms') so seeing this kinda deflated my excitement. I'll give it a good, fair shake, though.

The show can still be in continuity even if the art style is the same. All it takes is Batman mentioning his past adventures from The Batman and its donw.

Adam West would be perfect for this show's Batman.
