The best episode so far. We had our Lex analogue last week, and now I guess we get our Zod. What with the origin of Thrax (Drax?), and the growing questions surrounding Brainy, and the character establishment we got for Phantom Girl, this really was the best so far.

That guy had a Z on his chest. I can only think of one thing. Zod is his dad.

If Zod is his dad, whose his mom?

Here's a good question; why didn't the Legionairres become Phantoms like everyone else in there? O_o It was a small plot hole, mind, but it was somewhat odd.

Great action episode with several interesting twists: Brainy's kryptonite, Clark unaware of his origin, Science Police distrust the Legion, etc.

I was suspecting throughout the episode that Drax's dogs were the voices ordering him around. Guess it was just his folks in the Zone.

It's very likely that Drax is Zod's son. One of the phantoms appeared to be wearing General Zod's cap from the Silver Age. Also, the "Dr" in "Drax" might have been derived from Zod's full Kryptonian name, Dru-Zod.

One gripe though: why didn't the Legionnaires go phantom in the Phantom Zone? And how did Drax's parents conceive him in the Zone? If Drax ever comes back, they should elaborate a little on the nature of the Zone on the show.

Maybe they didn't stay long enough in the zone to transform? And I doubt that Drax was concieved in a conventional manner, given that he was made immune to Kryptonite.

EDIT - I watched the episode again... doesn't his name sound more like Trax? O_o

Maybe Drax wasn't conceived in the Zone, only born there.

Good episode. I loved the focus on relationships. Superman and Brainiac 5, Timber Wolf and Phantom Girl (since neither Lightning Lass nor Ultra Boy has appeared yet, those two makes sense), and even a little Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. I like that we get a sense of how their relationships are evolving on and off screen.

    - 3 stars!

Good episode. Drax was a formidable foe. I dig how his dogs looked like Bizarro's pet dog on STAS. Although I have enjoyed LOSH so far, each episode (with the exception of Timberwolf episode) leaves me feeling empty somehow. Not sure why.

    This series is going places.

Yeah I notice that too. Also I think I saw Doomday only smaller and without his spikes. Btw Drax dogs they seem familiar? I think I saw them in Superman:TAS once but I can't confirm it. Anyone remenbers them?

yeah, I believe that was Doomsday...only not as craggy as his JLU counterpart...a casualty of the LOSH design theory where everything appears to have a much softer texture than previous modern DC programs.

and Drax's pets were nods to Krypto from STAS. Originally one of the Preserver's specimens, he was brought to Earth w/ the rest of the Preserver's collection. When Bizarro found the Fortress of Solitude he freed the beast and took him on as a pet and named him Krypto. Until he was last seen in STAS "Little Big Head Man".

Maybe we'll see Zod during the season finale.

Sending a pregnant woman to the Phantom Zone? That's pretty low, even for Kryptonians. I was expecting a little more from Drax, maybe a revelation about Krypton to Superman, I dunno.

    The crisis reference was awesome.

I did like Brainiac 5 and the kryptonite, though. And Phantom Girl, I think she's my favorite character. We keep getting hints about her family, I wonder when we'll see them.

Like ROBOTRON said, Drax's dogs were modeled after Bizarro's Krypto, who was in the STAS episodes "Bizarro's World" and "Little Big Head Man".

EDIT: Anarky beat me to it.

Considering that Drax made comments about how his parents made sure he was immune to Kryptonite, I doubt that someone sent his mother there while she was pregnant. I bet he was made there.

Having had some time to think about it:

    I believe that

    Spoiler:
The apparent brainwashing, immunity to kryptonite, and unlikely birth in the Phantom Zone point to one thing:

    He's not a Phantom Zone kid. He's a brainwashed Mon-El.

Even the name "Drax" sounds a lot like "Daxam."

That's possible I was thinking that he wasn't a Kryptonian and the story does sound familiar.

I doubt he's a new version of Mon-El. I don't think the whole deal about him being such a stranger to the waking world (the concept of walking being new to him) and all this emphasis he puts on in regards to knowing Superman's legacy, plus the fact that he has so many allusions to Zod, makes me think he's another "legacy" character like Alexis. I think the whole idea of him being made there is what they were going for.

Exactly. Guys, Drax isn't just a Zod analogue, he's a combination Bizarro/Zod analogue with the best (worst?) qualities of both villains. Like Zod, he is very intelligent, but like Bizarro, he is immune to Kryptonite.

If you watch the episode again closely, you'll see the clues. They're everywhere!

    Zod

    1. Drax is a Phantom Zone prisoner.

    2. Drax's name is probably a reference to Jax-Ur, another Zod-like Phantom Zone prisoner who appeared in S:TAS.

    3. Drax has a "Z" on his chest.

    Bizarro

    1. Drax has albino-like features.

    2. Brainiac 5 says that Drax is almost genetically equal (i.e. identical) to Superman, implying that he is a clone.

    3. Drax's alien pets look like big, flying versions of Krypto, Bizarro's alien pet from S:TAS.

    4. The "Z" on Drax's chest could also be interpreted as a backwards "S", which Bizarro wears in the comics.

Why would the Phantom Zone criminals create a Superman clone when they already have Superman's powers?

Notice how the Phantom Zone projector didn't activate until Superman touched it? At some point, Superman must have reprogrammed the projector to only respond to his DNA. The Phantom Zone criminals needed a Superman clone to work the projector and set the rest of them free.

Don't you see? It all comes together! It's brilliant!

For the first episode of Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes I have seen this was a pretty good episode. There are many unanswered questions with Drax that well it can't be his last episode. Yeah it seems quite clear he is a clone of superman with Zod's DNA loyal to Zod. or so I think. Yet his mind seems tampered with, I guess there is too much Superman in him, that he would have been a good guy otherwise. I wonder how this would be possible in the Phantom Zone but really I just think that there will be another episode to answer these questions. At least there better be.

I just realized something. Given the Legionnaires' sketchy knowledge of Superman due to the "Great Crisis," it's very possible that that have no idea that the original Brainiac was a villain!

As shown in this episode, Brainiac 5 seems to know more about Superman's life than he lets on. Likely reason for why he's not talking: because his ancestors buried the truth about their evil prototype!

This would explain why he recruited Clark, not the adult Superman. He's trying to keep the truth hidden.

Or maybe he's doing so out of guilt, or playing his part in history, by making sure Superman develops into the kind of person he's supposed to be.

You are 100% correct. Tucker even talked about wanting to introduce new takes on classic Superman villains, or descendants of them, in this series. We've seen the Legion's takes on Luthor, Brainiac and now a Bizarro Zod.
