Does production of the Season Sets of JL represent the last hurrah for Timm & Co.?

I was just thinking that with the recent news of TT's cancellation, I've been waiting for the same news about JLU. Every day I look at this site, waiting for the dreaded confirmation that this great run is over.

While I keep holding out some level of hope for more eppys past the final nine due to be aired sometime in 2006, I also have to face the reality that there have been no unofficial whisperings like last fall (remember when Kevin Conroy confirmed a Season #5 at a comic-con about 5 months before there was any official word from CN/Time Warner/DC?) that would give me any real hope.

Per McDuffie's admission, given there is about an average nine-month lag time for an episode's development (writing until final delivery to CN), I believe that most of the JLU shows for Season #5 have to be either in the can or very close to it. That means Timm & Co will soon have a lot more time on their hands (relatively speaking, I'm sure there is plenty of last minute stuff to do) as it wouldn't make sense to spend time either writing or brainstorming additional eppys.

Noting all the above, my speculation is that Timm & Co basically have one more big project on their hands, which is providing the background commentary and other DVD extras that make the box sets valuable enough to justify the $$$, before this great team of producers moves onto greener pastures.

With Time Warner already starting to clean house in Burbank, unless they get the green light on the 'World's Collide' DTV or other similar JLU project after producing the box sets, doesn't it make sense that Timm & Co start working on other projects outside of the DCAU sometime early in 2006, lest they get tired of waiting for CN to make a decision about their fate?

    Thoughts?

As sad as the thought of no more episodes of JLU is to me, I really hope that Bruce Timm & company can continue to give us the DCAU via DTV movies somwhat like Marvel is doing with Lionsgate studios. A DTV movie dealing with the aftermath of "Legacy" in STAS & leading into JL or DTV movies that showcase different members of the JL that never had episodes that featured them such as Steel, Aztec, Red Tornado, Rocket Red,etc or even new DTV JLU adventures or even DTV movies of the JSA or GLC.Heck, even new DTV movies featuring Supes & Bats would be awesome. I'm realy not that excited about a LOSH animated series, I'd much rather it had been a tales of the GLCTAS or even a JSA TAS for that matter.

I would really get a kick out of a JSA animated series. The hard part for me would be choosing between the Golden Age JSA and the Modern Age JSA. From a story-telling standpoint, the Golden Age JSA might be a bit easier to deal with (you wouldn't have to continually have to allude to the team's predecessors as they would be the first generation of heroes). OTOH, the Modern Age team is a bit more diverse.

Hmmm...maybe if this hypothetical show had a mix of both (a number of flashback episodes dealing with a Golden Age incarnation of the team) it'd work out.

I don't know -- ratings are JLU are consistantly strong, and the toy line continues to do very well. That said, I spoke to Dwayne McDuffie at the Detroit Trinitycon in October and he said that the JLU team is looking at projects outside the current DCAU, so if JLU wraps up this season, that's it.

    Have a good day.

Maybe we will finally get our long lost nightwing series?
