Far as I know, she's based, essentially, on the Silver Age Hawkwoman whose name was also Shayera Hol, who was also a Thanagarian, and was married to Katar Hol.

She's still around, but she always went by the name "Hawkwoman" never "Hawkgirl", that's the Golden Age version (who is still around today, but has been reincarnated as a 19 year old Texan chick).
Shayera is active right now in the "Rann-Thanagar" War mini-series, but she's never been involved with Jon Stewart in the comics (have they ever even met?)
i thought that relationship was made up. is the batman and wonder woman relationship at least real?
Um, I don't think any of these stories have much basis in reality...
Anyway. Although I don't really agree that JLU plot twists should slavishly follow those of the comic in order to be valid or 'real,' to answer your question, Batman and WW did go through a period of flirtation in JLA.

Uh...check it out in a day or two; I'm overhauling the whole page to reflect Shayera's JLU transformation. It should be ready soon.Originally Posted by Sirkenz17

Not really, she has more of a thing with Supes most of the time. Though I think she and Aquaman were close for a whileOriginally Posted by melibell21

Howdy,
IMO, the Hawkgirl of JLU is closest to the 90's-era Shayera Thal from Hawkworld except for the costume. The original Silver Age character (60's or so) was little more than a sidekick to Hawkman, while the revamp in the 90's grafted a tough street cop angle to her character. The idea of the Hawks being the advance guard for a Thanagarian invasion worked its way into the 90's comics as well, but I don't think it played out the same way at all (Katar Hol and Shayera were not aware of the plans ahead of time and switched sides pretty quickly, I believe).
Even then, I think the Shayera of JLU really is her own character with few or no ties to any existing version much beyond the costume and some of the rudimentary elements of the origin. She was never romantically attached to any other superhero character other than Hawkman -- the John Stewart relationship was fabricated entirely for the show.

From what I've read the JL/JLU version is different from any previous version of Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman. Bits and pieces were taken from the various versions to create the one used in JL. However if there was a book with the JL version of the character I would probably be interested in reading it.
What Ace saidCheck out Rann/Thanagar War, Silverbolt. Up until now, her most recent comic book appearance was two years ago. I think it's weird, given her pressence the on the show, that she's been used so sparsely in the DCU

I always loved Hawkgirl, and still do. I don't know why, maybe it's prolly because Shayera has red hair, which makes her beautiful (I have red hair also, and that's rare I believe). The only other woman I enjoy also is Huntress at number 2, WW at 3, Black Canary at number 4, I question number 5 since...nothing is coming to me at the moment.
But I'll check those books out. I did see her in the comics, she looked tough.
Howdy,
Hey, look at that!Originally Posted by Silverbolt
Admittedly, Hawkgirl doesn't get anywhere near the comic book love that she deserves in those stories, but a number of them are pretty kickin' comics worth reading in any event.
I suspect the reason why is that the whole 90's-era Hawkman and Hawkwoman characters ended up as the poster children for "When Continuity Goes Wrong." It was kind of perverse to watch as the tiny little mistakes that would have been best ignored entirely slowly blossomed into more and more ridiculous retcons and explanations until the only thing they could do was throw Hawkman into Limbo and forget about him for a few years until Geoff Johns could come along and fix it all, mostly. If you want the gruesome, gory mostly pre-Johns details, check out the Hawkman FAQ.Originally Posted by Sue
Despite how cool the 90's Shayera Thal was as a character, she's a reminder of that age and I think they still have something of that stigma. Still, I vaguely remember some DC higher-up making a comment a few years ago hinting that Shayera would join up with the comic book Justice League, but that didn't seem to happen. Maybe b.t. or someone else on JLU told him what their plans were for Hawkgirl.

I'm familiar with the Hawks' convoluted history (taking some ibuprofen afterwards helped). Thanks anyway for the link. I think you're right about why she's not used much. I remember reading that Geoff Johns had plans for her during his run on Hawkman, but since he's no longer there, it doesn't look like the current writers will pick them up. Unfortunately, I think it'll get much worse before it gets better.
I guess we'll know for sure soon enough.Spoiler:

I picked up Rann/Thanagar #5 today, and it turns out my prediction above was right. Looks like this is where she stands in the comics now![]()

Actually, I'm pretty sure there was something in JLA recently on WW & BatsOriginally Posted by Anwar
It was during the weak post-Waid issues I skipped, so I'm not sure what they implied, but supposedly there was something going on.
For WW & Supes, there was one kiss in Action #600.
I think the closest she got with Aquaman was an short story where he mentioned his attaraction to her in the midst of a battle after getting tangled in her lasso (for comedic affect only).
Here the real sad part. I liked the comicbook version more then the JLU version.Originally Posted by Sue

Yeah, I'm just saying in most elseworlds, Supes ends up with WW. The two exceptions I remember off the top of my head are in "The Dark Side" where he's with Big Barda, and "Shogun of steel", where Batman is a woman and...well, you get what I mean...Originally Posted by EarthX
Anywho, I remember in "Tower of Babel" she really wasn't very happy with Bats, and I really can't see any decent relationship between them in the more recent issues considering OMAC and stuff...
